What kind of era are we living in?

Most of r9k are born in the 80's. Some were born in the early 90's. How do you think people will look back on the time period between 1980 and 2010? What do you think the future holds?

Most of use have not been through a major recession until the GFC. We did not have to live through several major events of the 1900's such as the Great Depression, WWI and WWII, the 1960's era of free love and drug experimentation, the cold war, the space race.

We were not around for the Renaissance, the Ice Age, the Middle Ages, etc. Are we living in somewhat stable and boring times?

We did see the rise of technology such cell phones and computers. Now it seems that technology is slowling down somewhat. Sure phones are getting better and so are computers. But it has already reached a stage where plenty of people in civilized countries have cell phones, internet, and computers. I don't think the advancements will be as dramatic as they were about 15 years ago.

What do you think the future will bring? Will medical science start to create a world free of most diseases? Will we see the singularity? Another world war?

More importantly, when will they make sex robots?

tl;dr Are these exciting times or just time filler times?

I'm sure somebody said this before the PC was introduced.

Most of us still haven't been through a major recession.

I'm nearly certain we'll be remembered as the generation which shaped the internet.

If you think technology has slowed down, you may need to adjust your news feeds. It's only getting faster. I mean, holy fuck, jetpacks. Youtube. For fuck's sake.

We are living in the age of decadence. "The Fate of Empires" by Sir John Glubb (some british WW2 general) ... read it, it's just 25 pages, and it's online and it opens your eyes.

Considering you live in an age with the fastest computers providing 24/7 connection to the outside world with shit like cell phones, twitter, youtube, and what have you as well as ALL THE COLLECTIVE INFORMATION OF HUMANITY I say you have it pretty good.

It's the beginning of the end of history. The first-world is beginning to wind down, with life becoming more stable and less eventful. Hopefully the rest of the world will follow suit as it continues to develop. Eventually, we will see an Earth where the only events worth recording are positive achievements (science and technology, space exploration, ect) and natural disasters. Human history will grind to a halt. If nothing goes wrong between now and that happy point in the future.

the time period of the 90's where more people started to buy personal computers (they were no longer for nerds) was a pretty eventful time in history. Now plenty of people have a video game console in their home as well compared to 20 years ago.

The last 10 years hasn't really shown anything major happen besides the whole terrorism thing and financial crisis though

jetpacks will probably not be widespread in the next decade at least. Therefore it doesn't really affect the daily lives of most people. Something like the rise of cell phones has a direct affect on people day to day.

Technology is getting faster and faster. But it seems like everything that can be done with the current technolgy already has. And anything that can't be done, is not around the corner, but decades away. Hover cars etc

Not many people ever had the patience to learn anything. The internet has made that information more readily accessible for those who do, and maybe a little will rub off on those that don't.

These times are fucking amazing, are you kidding?

I think Carl Sagan said something about this before. You and I are living in the era where mankind is taking its first tentative steps into space. A man will have walked on mars by the time we're dead. Think about that.

This is a fucking amazing time to be alive.

seeing a man go to mars for the first time is not as exciting as seeing a man go to the moon for the first time. Sure going to mars is a huge accomplishment. But to most, it wouldn't be anywhere near as exciting as the moon landing.

Exciting would be if they had an amusement park on the moon where you could visit.

Yes. Not only that, he told them to discontinue the program and I believe there may be a bill passed for no money from taxes to go to space programs.

Honestly this may be an improvement. Privatizing space research/ventures.

Its worth mentioning, going to any of these places is worthless right now unless they have a valuable resource on/in them.

Even then its just not practical right now, its to expensive.

Decadence is the word elderly people use for fun they were born too late to experience.

There has never been a better time and place to live than right now, in a first-world nation. We are the very tip of 200,000 years of human history. It's not perfect but we're well on our way.

Broad band internet is fucking fantastic. I am old enough to remember a time before internet. So I went through the whole dial up stage and shit.

Before if you wanted to watch a movie, you had to go to the video store to get a VHS tape. Now you just go on the net and can watch it there within hours. Or you can stream it.

Porn is accessible to anyone with a net connection. In the old days, porn was magazines and some VHS tapes. None of this new content available all the time on the net.

I spend hundreds of dollars on porno mags

It's a great time to be alive. The very fact that a drop out like me can make a decent living on the Internet, and holy shit Dead Space on the ps3 is like watching a fucking movie.

Who here can't wait for the next gen consoles like PS4 and XBOX3?

We are taking the first baby steps into space tourism. Virgin is coming out with a commercial space flight in the next few years. Just think when we are old farts our shitty ass grandkids will ask us if we ever thought we could fly to space for a day. And we say "fuck no, astronauts are just a bunch of faggots"
