As an example, last weekend I went to the Cloisters museum for a date Friday afternoon with my girlfriend (got out of work early) and then took E Friday night and danced/fucked the night away. Woke up early Saturday morning (with no haze thank God) to do Big Brother/Big Sister game day at the middle school I volunteer at, then had a cookout with my friends where I killed off 2 or 3 pints of Jim Beam, and then went to a club. I'm someone who didn't start drinking until last summer, at the age of well over 20. Now I'm no longer living at home, have fun every now and then and have more stories to tell then before.
Used to knock drinking until I tried it a few times. Good times with good people can become even better.

You have to understand the peer culture from high school. While American society takes importance in education and getting ahead, the American peer culture, influenced by the mass media and peer pressure, goes against this. In order to fit in, in order to not be considered weird you have to do things that in your mind or in their parents minds, not moral or ethical or breaks the law.

People under the age of 18 can't drink, but underage drinking happens. The habits they get from underage drinking continues in college and university. The same applies to doing illegal drugs, other crimes, dating, and other forms of socializing that some people (read: nerds, people who are more focused in school than socializing) find conflicting or uninteresting.

That is why peer culture from high school considers just studying and/or getting into other interests of than the typical teen socialization.
