    Sup /r9k/,
I've been looking at the Arizona immigration law, and I dont see why so many folks are butthurt about it. Hang on to your ID, and you'll be fine. Where there are roughly 460,000 illegal immigrants in the state, the state needs broader power to secure the borders.
    Your opinions?

There is no country in Europe where a non EU citizen is permitted to live without a resident permit and French citizens have to carry ID with them at all time and can be asked to produce it by any police officer without any justification. This is the case in most European countries.

Most countries in the world require visitors to obtain visas to enter their countries, even tourists, which are granted for short periods of times. Tourist who stay longer are deported and face stiff penalties even in most African and Asian countries.

The concept that people can enter another country illegally or by over extending their tourist visa then sending their children to public schools, using local health services, and working in the black market labor poll seems to be unique to some people in the US.

Right, and if they're in here illegally, they should renew their visas, or marry a national to get in. I don't see a problem in this to be honest.

They want to enforce immigration laws. Most illegal immigrants are Latino. So therefore it's a racist law?

Should we also stop arresting criminals because they are usually black?

Read the bill idiot.. doesn't say anything about being a police state. All it does is give the local police the power to enforce LAW WRITTEN BY CONGRESS AND SIGNED BY THE PRESIDENT. In other words, they are only enforcing existing laws.

No, the problem is even if you're born in the US and appear to be an immigrant(i.e you're parents were immigrants), you could forcefully be detained. So just by virtue of being ethnically Mexican you have to carry ID. Caucasians who could be immigrants, illegal or not, would not have to be worried because they are not the ones being targeted. This is the very definition of discrimination. I'm not saying illegal immigration isn't a problem, I just think this is a shitty way to try to deal with it.

Probably troll bait, but I'll homnomnomnom

The current policy is not working and its affecting immigrants who came to this country legally. You think it's fair to the Pakistani who's spent 9 years working as a cab driver and taking citizenship courses at night to get his citizenship? What about the Polish woman who cleans people's houses for 14 hours a day?

The usual response is always targetted at the mega corporations who've been abusing the current policies by reporting to INS workers in their plants who are illegal and who have essentially outlived their usefulness. This bleeding heart standpoint does not work. It hasn't for the past two decades and won't for time to come.

The 4th amendment requires that police has 'reasonable suspicion' that a crime has been committed before temporarily detaining them to investigate a crime. What factors lead to a reasonable suspicion that someone is an illegal immigrant? If it's the color of their skin and their language skills, you risk including far too many innocent people in your search. More broadly, what reason is there to believe that a crime has been committed at all just by looking at a person. The law only works if police are stopping every hispanic they see to check for immigration status. Sure, they could just carry around ID cards, but they shouldn't have to, and they shouldn't feel unwelcome in their own country.

This. I have no problem with Republican ideals, and they have a lot of issues that I agree with, but damned if they don't do it in the most ass-backward way possible. But thats the thing, folks need to drive, you have a SSN, you got a birth certificate, you got a Drivers lisence. There's no reason at least one of those things shouldn't be in your house. Got it in a safety deposit box? You'd be suprised what court appointed laywers can do, such as go to your bank and get the said papers for you.
    >> Anonymous 04/27/10(Tue)20:19:06 No.8634755
The Federal Government won't do anything about it, so the state is. This law is going to fail in court before it is enacted, but it is forcing the government to stand up and take notice.

well, of course any U.S citizen would have those things...but it doesn't make it any less traumatizing when the cops show up to your house at 2 AM over an "anonymous tip".

even if a cop isn't corrupt, most of you haven't read this bill. the levels on which it can be interpreted are insane, and thats why it needs judicial review.

Illegal immigrants are fine with breaking our laws. They'll break as many as they can get away with. They don't care about our country or paying into the system for everyone else. These are the exact same people who SHOULD feel unwelcome.
