I recently turned 21 which means I can drink at the bars now. This also means I have a new environment to make a fool out of myself. What are some common things I should do and not do in a bar that a novice might not know? I am going with a group of 10 or so and I know a few of them.

Don't yell your order at the bartender. Dont call him "buddy. guy, chief, bro" etc. Learn his name, hold your money up, dont wave it around like a douche. Dont be loud, it fucks up other's good times. Tip well and you'll get your drinks about 50% faster and a little stiffer than the other guys.

There is a mandatory initiation act where you just help yourself to the tap. You are encouraged to wrap your lips around the spout.

a dollar per drink is only acceptable at a dive bar.

if your bar charges more than $10 for any of the signature cocktails, $2 or 20% of the tab is more reasonable.

    other things to know -

don't order stupid drinks you saw on TV unless it's a relatively fancy bar (a gin and tonic is the limit at a local dive)

don't order wine unless it's a wine bar or you're ok drinking something that's been open for a month or more (you shouldn't be ok with this)

don't be one of those people who worries about "male" vs "female" drinks. these rules are invented to troll insecure 21 year olds, the only people who actually believe in them are rednecks and mentioning them in any context except as a joke will mark you as one of them.

Sort of stand against each other? Few simple drinks are branded "female"

You're looking for a discotheque. Some bars do, however. Pubs rarely do.
    >> Anonymous 04/21/10(Wed)20:46:11 No.8504463
1 dollar tip for every drink. It's common courtesy, yet bartenders are extremely thankful when you do it.

To order a drink, just get in between people and put an elbow on the bar. Helps if you have your wallet or cash in your hand, but don't wave it around or snap your fingers like a fucking tool.

Make eye contact with the bartender. If they're busy, it'll take a while, but it they're not, all it will take is eye contact and a little up-nod to get their attention.

Know exactly what you want. Do not waste the bartender's time, that's their money you're wasting. Know the specials by checking the bar out online or checking the board in the bar.

Don't order a fancy bitch drink. If you do, and they don't know how to make the fancy bitch drink, then just default to a simple bitch drink. Bitches can't tell the difference.

On top of this, always have a drink that every bar serves. Always check what beers they have. If you don't know what to get, then get a beer that's on tap at the establishment that you are at.
But every bar might not have miller light, every bar might not know how to make a pink naked lady fuzzy dilly hole (exaggeration), but every bar should be able to mix two classic, generic bar ingredients together. Gin&Tonic, Rum&Coke, etc., find a VERY simple mixed drink like that and make it your default for unknown bars. Personally, I go for a rum and coke.

if the place is that disorganized/understaffed/flooded with screaming kids, they would normally take down the "weird drinks" menu before shit got out of hand. or it would get knocked off the counter on its own.

Here's something that took me a little bit to figure out when I first started going to bars:

You have wells and premium liquors. Wells are the shittiest kind (you'd just call it "rum" instead of "captain morgan's" or whatever), and premium liquors are called by name.

If a place has "$2.00 Wells", for example, that means a Rum & Coke costs $2.00.

If a place has $2.00 U-Call-Its, however, that means that /any/ mixed drink costs $2.00. A Rum & Coke costs $2.00. Bacardi and Coke costs $2.00. Captain Morgans and Coke costs $2.00. Vodka and Red Bull costs $2.00. So on and so forth.
