Japanese universities don't accept nonresident students. Teenagers go to japan for high school sometimes, or to teach while in college. It's not smart, just a different thing to do. More passionate? maybe about anime, but do you really want to be that passionate about anime? I mean, the japanese aren't exactly going to appreciate your obsession for anime. It's like a japanese person coming to america because they love The Boondocks.

I know one, I think he works for Broccoli USA now, not quite sure.

Some people go to Japan and end up living there, some get disenchanted, some move back to the US but continue in Japan related fields.

In the case of my friend, I think he planned better than most of us. Seriously, more than half of success is planning the route that leads there. I know I fucked up a bunch because I do things randomly.

Bullshit. I have a friend who took their undergraduate at Sophia in Tokyo, and know of others that transferred to Japanese colleges. The main issue is that you are paying out of your pocket (no government student loans) and if you move back to the US at the end your degree is not going to be looked at very highly.

Also, as always, it depends on the circles you run in. Lots of people in Japan look down on otaku, but it's a subculture with it's own world. You hang out with other otaku, you'll have lots of friends in Japan.

Japanese people come to America all the time. There are tons of them in Boston and Honolulu. 10% of Berklee's students are Japanese. Going to Japan because you like anime is no more weird than going to America because you like Jazz.

A friend of mine did it and spent his entire time outside of the classroom with other white, nerdy weaboos. Had a white girlfriend for awhile who was only using him for future access to a US green card. Kind of sad really to live in another country and not actually interact with the locals. I'm not even sure if he talked to any hot Japanese women.
