I don't know how he got them but I assumed he looked up email addresses of the users and got through by answering the secret questions. I don't think any bruteforcing was involved. For one most email and newgrounds accounts automatically lock accounts when someone has tried testing passwords.

Every few days a mod would post some info on how to secure you account with some pretty basic shit like "don't put your password as something stupid". Credzx who had control over a mod would delete the thread. He would delete a lot of other threads too.

When the admins found out mods were being hacked they would temporarily remove mod privileges for those mods.

Credzx was involved with the Duck Division who would submit spam flashes. I think some had malicious coding and others had CP on them. So it is possible those flashes could contribute to the hacked accounts.

At the time I didn't look at random flash in the portal nor did I post a lot. I just lurked.

Two words: pattern detection.
It might be challenging to implement (will probably require mad mathematics skills, aside from programming)
However it should be the safest way to block spam, aside from captchas.
The theory is that spam follows a pattern, be it words, sentences, structure of the post, of the links, whatever.
Once the pattern is known (even if it is just roughly known) most or all of the spam following it can be blocked.
Similar systems are used on mailservers to filter all the viagra spam for example.

Flash, Javascript, Java, Image based. It all has to somehow submit to the server and also a human has to understand what to do.

Unless you're going to ask them to click on the picture of some object and then randomize the location of that in a grid along with other images. Even then, that just needs you to reverse engineer the callbacks or the image loading code.

However, that is a useful twist on captcha and is pretty hard to break. Still fucking annoying though.

All ISPs has a anti-spam provision in their Terms of Service, meaning if a spammer uses a ISP to spam another website or service, their connection gets cut off.

Gamefaqs does the same thing if there is repeated, intentional abuse of their forums. If we can track the spammers down that way, we can reduce the spam on the website. Just a suggestion.
