Oh hey, the shit has e-mailed me in the past. Will post those in a few.
Here they are. Who knows this guy? He brags about friends coming to him and complaining—"Chris Beer" from New Zealand.
(Googling "crebzx@hotmail.com" has a few interesting hits.)

Hey, /r9k/, l think I want to be a waiter this summer.

Tell me your horror stories, dissuade me from becoming a waiter/persuade me to apply for the job, give waiting tips and tricks, elaborate on what the job is like, suggest the better places to work at, etc.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/10(Sat)18:59:43 No.8321087
Just get ready to meet all the best and worst kinds of people.

Fuck anyone who says you need to backpack through some third-world country to "find yourself".

Wanna know the world? Wait tables or serve drinks for 6 weeks.

    >>8321087
    Is that good or bad?

    >backpack through some third-world country
I kinda want to do that too, someday.

I don't tip. Ever. Just so you know.

Haha, for some reason, I don't think that would bother me. Would that make me a bad waiter?

Are you a girl or a guy? Men traditionally make a lot less tips because its easier for a girl to schmooze some tips.

However women get the sexual harassment from old people and war veterans who don't give a shit.

    >that doesn't bother me

You can't be a waiter. All waiters bitch, moan, cry, threaten, and insult when people say they don't tip. "OOH, I'll spit in your food!" Haa.

In general though, if you think you can stand dealing with angry people always angry all the time and stupid little kids, then yeah, you can try waiting as a job.

I was thinking of being a waiter. I'm afraid I'd drop the plates and make an ass of myself.

I'm a guy, so that kinda sucks a little bit but not really, I guess. I just like the job as I'm imagining it.
    >dealing with angry people always angry all the time and stupid little kids
    >>8321153
Yeah, I think I can do that. In a way, that's kind of why I want to do it. I want to see how patient I can be. Plus, I want to get better at small talk and spontaneous chummyness. I hear the job is both frenetic and (consequently) stressful, and I want to see if I can handle that.

Just work dish. You get to eat more and you dont realy have to give a crap about anything. Also dont have to deal with customers.

It'll bother you but you won't go into RAGE SPIT IN THEIR FOOD mode unless you have mental problems. Just prepare to be stressed, OFTEN.

Cooking the dishes you mean? I don't think I want to do that. Besides, I want to deal with the customers.

    >>8321406
What's the main cause of the stress, though? I mean, I know it's the customers, but what specifically?
    >> Anonymous 04/10/10(Sat)19:21:54 No.8321455
    >>8321221
It's not hard to handle but you have to adopt a certain attitude. Some people try to please their tables as much as possible. When I worked as a waiter in my freshman year of college I tried that route at first but then I realized I just did not give a fuck so once a table started giving me problems I just ignored them and moved them to the back of my mental priority list. Honestly, the majority of people are nice to deal with but those 1 - 3 bad tables a day will ruin your shit.

Customers constantly bothering you even when they can see you are busy as fuck, shit going wrong in the kitchen then getting all the blame from the customers for it, coworkers being giant asshats, managers on you case about shit you cannot control, things like that.

How was it? Mostly I am worried about the uniforms and also about having to carry a lot of food on a platter. I am not very strong.

These are really my main concerns.

Also, how did you get the job as a waiter? I don't want to be a host or busboy or whatever -- is there any way for my to skip that, since I have no experience working for a restaurant?
    >> Anonymous 04/10/10(Sat)19:32:03 No.8321597
    >>8321533
It was alright. Some days were incredibly stressful (a string of bad tables on a Saturday night when you can have up to 20 tables open at the same time) and others were more laid back. I worked with one of my close friends so we joked around a lot to take the edge off. I got the job by just walking with my friend and asking for the job. My brother used to work there about a year before me so I got to talk directly to the manager.

Carrying trays of food is pretty easy and you probably won't have to carry out more than two at a time. There are also 'runners' you help you out with you have a shitton of stuff to bring out. I spilled a entire tray of drinks on a woman once, shit was hilarious, these things happen so don't worry about it.

What kind of money does the average waiter make (with tips)?
    >> Anonymous 04/10/10(Sat)19:39:50 No.8321711

She was angry but not overtly so. She didn't scream or anything like that but you could tell she was pissed. I apologized and cleaned off the table and floors as best as I could and resumed serving. We all laughed about it afterward. I received a horrible tip of course but I DID spill drinks on her.

    >In May 2008, median hourly wages (including tips) of waiters and waitresses were $8.01. The middle 50 percent earned between $7.32 and $10.35. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $6.73, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $14.26 an hour. For most waiters and waitresses, higher earnings are primarily the result of receiving more in tips rather than higher hourly wages. Tips usually average between 10 percent and 20 percent of guests' checks; waiters and waitresses working in busy or expensive restaurants earn the most.
