You can hear them say, we need to see him pick up a weapon... Then he doesn't, and they kill him anyway along with killing two other men and seriously injuring two children, clearly unarmed, who try to rescue him in a van. Oh, and later, they laugh at the fact that a Bradley runs over a corpse.

    Your tax dollars.

I watched the whole thing carefully and the resolution simply isn't sufficient to identify what it is the men are carrying. Maybe the copter crew has much better resolution than wikileaks got, and those really were weapons. Maybe it's not and they're murderers.

But in any case the information is not there for us to see. As frustrating as that is.

Calling it one way or another is simply acting out your preconceptions or biases. I have mine (and they are exceedingly anti-occupation) but the facts simply aren't in this video and the result is just inflammatory.

People who have been through war get desensitized to this and they have to act this way in order to cope with things. You can't effectively fight a war when every time you're about to pull the trigger you think you're taking someone's son/father/brother/cousin. War has always been like this and unfortunately (or fortunately depending on the way you think about it) we have the technology today to show us just how horrible it is.

It is an example of the morals taught into the soldiers who commit the atrocities. Killing is seen as a game, death from a screen.

There will be patriots who defend the actions regardless, but at the very root, the ever changing reason for this war cannot be ignored.

First, we were there for Osama, then Sadam, who had nothing to do with 9/11, then WMDs, now iraqi freedom, and soon to be for a foothold to assault Iran to defend Israel.

    And you'll still defend it.

I understand how this can be seen as a tragedy for those that died, but I do not understand the crying and sense of doom as if all American soldiers do this shit all the time.

Im not defending their actions, but who knows what actually was going on and through the heads of the soldiers. Either way this sort of thing occurs on both sides, neither is evil and neither is good.

God damn it looks like it would be so much fun to be a gunner on a helicopter, just blasting the shit out of all those guys, they didn't even have a chance.

Oh yeah, and they did have some weapons, so I believe it's totally justified. They were justified shooting the van, too. Every time something happens over there those fuckers will swarm on the seen and take everything. For example, if someone blows up a vehicle with an IED they will come and steal all the fragments so the Americans can't figure out where it came from or how it was made. It's definitely not a matter of some dude randomly driving down the road and happening upon someone who needed help.

They saw the hostiles and asked for permission to fire. In the video we can clearly see weapons. They asked the high command if those were their troops. Command said no. The only rational thing any man can think would be that they are hostile since they are such a large group going towards a convoy. The "american" military label can be replaced by "european" or even "russian". Stop being so butthurt.

Shitty thing, but it's an honest mistake and nothing more.

For every engagement like this there are literally hundreds where the people are in fact insurgents getting ready to attack or retreating from an attack.

Apaches crew saw a bunch of guys with what looked like weapons creeping around on the flank of a nearby infantry unit. What are they supposed to do? Let the people go so they can ambush the nearby infantry unit? Fuck no.

This is part of the risk of being a war journalist - someone might mistake you for an enemy and blow you away.

I don't care how many muslims die, they kill more of their own civilians then we do, but unlike them our guys have the training and equipment to genocide those faggots.

    Watched the whole video.

Camera equipment appears to be mistaken for weapons. (A tripod for an RPG, and varying kinds of cameras for guns. Perhaps there are some genuine guns - but I should think they were camera crew escorts), admittedly it's hard to tell. Which is to the soldiers credit.

The "callous" conversation of the servicemen is a bit jilting - but given the conditions I understand why they adopt it - to remain somewhat sane.

I suspect, if they discovered the truth of who they killed some would feel genuine penetrating remorse, others would blow it off as an easy mistake, and others would make excuses.

    It's very hard to watch.

    Do I think it's a mistake? Yes.
Do I think it's terrible and soul-deadening? yes.

Do I think the U.S. soldiers were malicious? No, I think they operated with false premises and erroneous suppositions - but in combat, I understand why they'd err on that side.

So, yeah, it's horrible. But... I think this illustrates the horrors of the nature of war, rather than any crime committed individually. If you find this reprehensible - it is a condemnation of the circumstances of war, the circumstances of combat, the very nature of violence itself - rather than the mistakes of servicemen. Yeah, mistakes and reprimands might need to be made but... they are not criminals, nor evil. Just human.

    It's tragic. Just pure tragedy.

If some of the people in here believe the Camera equipment was weaponry - it illustrates the difficulties of identification of situations in a combat scenario. We know more afterward.

The "relaxed" situation was only because they were currently unengaged in combat - I am not sure of the ROE at the moment this was taken, so it would be unfair for any of us to pass judgment.

Good to see you pass off your loss as trolling, however. And no, but I have been overseas. Both sides are doing terrible shit, accidental or otherwise (not that there's much accidental when it comes to strapping yourself with bombs and running at a convoy), but that's war, that's humanity, and that's the way it always will be.

Doesn't matter what it looks like to you, if you watch the video it's actually the guy in the other helicopter that identifies the weapons. So for one thing, he had a better point of view, and for another, he's trained for this kind of shit and sees these weapons day in and day out, he's not just some dork on the internet who thinks he's an expert because he plays FPS games.

It's one thing to shoot at predicted insurgents while not absolutely sure to protect nearby allies (which is wrong because they should have to make sure), but it is a whole other story to shoot that van and the guy after he shows no other intention but to rescue a wounded person.

There was only the risk of one or two insurgents getting away with heavy wounds, while on the other hand you have the risk of killing innocent civillians just so they can not get away to survive.

And that guy was BEGGING for fire permission, while the responsible higher ups obviously cant judge the situation to its fullest. While their action may be udnerstandable, it is in no way justified.

    Army aviator guy

Most the people in the armed forces are compassionate. We aren't looking to kill innocent people. It does invariably happen, and it fucks with people. But the brutal realities of the mission don't often allow you to express that compassion.

I had a rash moment where I volunteered to put my kiowa down to evac an iraqi kid. Backseats in a Kiowa are full of avionics and surveilance gear, so I would of had to put the kid on my lap.

I was obviously denied, and it was a stupid request. If I did that, the guys on the ground lose my eyes in the sky. And then more people probably get killed.

Again, these fuckers will absolutely swarm areas that have seen conflict so they can collect their wounded and take weapons and clear out anything that the Americans might use to track them down. Normal people would NOT stop to help terrorists, they knew they'd get shot at. They were moving like they had a fire lit under their asses because they knew that the Americans were closing in and would take that guy to a hospital, and keep him detained. They didn't want that to happen, they wanted to fix him up themselves so he could get back to killing and terrorizing.

You are so naive, its not strange for international journalists to have PMC escourts in the war zone, especially since iduno insurgents kidnap them all the time. With the chopper as far away as it was - I doubt they saw it at all. I suspect they heard shooting, and came upon an apparently "finished" battle. Not an ongoing one.

Also - why do you presume people act rationally in emergency situations? They do not.

Finally - just because it is not how you would act, does not mean it is how everyone will/should act. They wanted to help and were gunned down tragically for it.

In life, in war especially there are moments of complete injustice. Where there is nothing to be done to fix things. All attempts to blame someone are in order to alleviate the nature of tragedy. But tragedy IS tragic. There is no escaping the horrors of it. And the attempts to vilify one group or another (civvies OR soldiers) in order to exonerate the other is just a poor attempt at cleansing ourselves of the truly crushing reality and pain of such an existence.

War is hell. We just saw a terribly small piece of it.

Unless you've lived in a war-zone, i suspect you should not make assumptions of how one "ought" to live in it.

I dont mean to be snide, I'm just aware of how hindsight, looking at a situation in retrospect is far easier than the moment, at which you see a man crawling on the ground, bleeding, and no signs of conflict anywhere (for several minutes).

Human compassion is powerful, and I'm rather a big fan of it - there are, horrible, sad, and tragic consequences to it sometimes. And we saw such an instance here.

People in this thread are looking for a bad guy - and they dont realize there wasnt one. War does not need bad guys. Horror and tragedy come forth without any input of evil.

This thread is just what people do - trying to excuse a scenario so that the world seems more just than it is, so things seem to make more sense, so that there is a "reason" for every ounce of pain - so that we might not be so terrified of the chaos that is reality.

War often does not permit us the luxury of these lies - and we saw that in the video.

What is obvious to you - turns out in the end, to be untrue. There were no insurgents in the video (as later investigations proved out). Armed? Perhaps - but no insurgents.
