    Well, R9K...
I graduated college almost 3 years ago.
And today something really special happened. I've been keeping track of something...
Today I was rejected from a job in my career field.
    For the 500th time.

    >get rejected
    >swallow sadness

I think I may just fucking kill myself. I really can't bear to work at wal-mart for the rest of my life.

Mention this to your next job interview (the 500 thing).
    Record results. Post on youtube.

If you have truly been rejected for 500 jobs you feel you have the qualifications for, there is something incredibly wrong with you.

This does include jobs where I didn't even get an interview.

But I'm pretty sure, bringing a camera to an interview and telling them it's going to be on youtube is a sure way to make it number 501

A few friends with more work experience then me had trouble finding a job. I just had my degree. While it took them 15+ interviews to get one, I got mine on my 3th interview. Just be more professional then the others.

    Wear a suit.
    Prepare for the interview.
Take a pen and paper with you.
I had all the answers to any possible question already written down, because I suck at interviews.

I looked up every fucking answer. And guess what, they told me they loved my enthusiasm and how well I was prepared.

I've been rejected for part-time work and retail shit, and then got handed a job in my field (IT) without having to do an interview. Got hired as a data entry technician, told my boss I could write a program to do the job, ended up as the boss of the other technicians briefly, and ultimately then got promoted to software dev. and all the data entry clerks were fired. I got paid their wages for the duration of the project (~2000 pounds) for the code I wrote, and also enjoy licencing revenues.

Oh and I've been hired as a permanent "consultant" for the business (a kind of shitty little start up).

Advice to OP: It's not what you know, it's who you know. I'm in my first year of university and I got a job in software development. Social ability and connections were vital for my initial success.

What engineering discipline is it? Depending on what it is you could always join the military as an engineer. That way you'd have years of practical engineering and management experience.

I'm a britfag who joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, gained a shitty Open University degree (long distance learning) in general engineering. When I got out I had companies from several disciplines sucking my cock just because I'd worked in a military enviorment, was an experienced NCO and gained a degree in my own time.

Big companies are just working the employees they have like slaves so they can cut down on operating expenses. That's why the economic numbers have rebounded, but there are almost no new jobs. Don't expect that to change anytime in the near future either. I have basically been ordered to deny 99% of all applicants no matter their qualifications. OP, you need a portfolio of your work. I got my current in software dev because I worked on a load of software I posted about on a forum and one of the guys on the forum offered me a job.

From what I gather, hospitals aren't exactly hiring doctors at a lightning pace either. Plus it's a very political job. You have to suck up a lot to get in and ahead. But if you can do it, I say make a go of it.

I'm not crazy doctor loving guy, I'm just a pragmatist.

But, no that won't happen in our lifetimes

Maybe, but there is a big shortage of primary care doctors, the baby boomers are all getting old and shit, and being a medicalfag makes it 1000x easier to relocate to a foreign country if shit goes south. Plus I love helping people. :-P

Just out of curiosity what kind of company do you work for? Who do you hire?

Well, I'm not claiming to be an expert since I don't work for a hospital. Although I do know that if you want a guaranteed job, make your focus Geriatrics. They expect a huge shortfall in that profession. You wont make as much as an OB/GYN or a neurosurgeon, but you will be in higher demand and you probably won't get sued as much.

I work for an Aerospace company that does a lot of defense work. When I started about 5 years ago we hired all kinds of people from janitors up to physicists. But now it's mostly maintenance people and other unskilled labor. Occasionally we'll get an opening for an engineer or researcher, but since we have a waiting pool about 1000 people deep, it fills fast.

So, If you aren't hiring, what the fuck do you get paid to do?

    Dilbert?

Right now, firing people. I've developed a rep for being pretty ruthless so the bosses like me. I also have to deal with harassment complaints, counsel people about their career options and benefits...etc

Like most people, I knew a guy. I have a degree in sociology and one in business management so it just kind of fit. Although they say the best degrees to have are law degrees. Don't believe the lies though, the best HR people do not like people. You have to be able to see a problem for what it is and make the most logical decision, regardless of who gets hurt. It sounds easy, until you have to fire old Jenkins who has 4 kids and a wife on dialysis.

Why is his picture relevant? Post your resume, and a link to some of the jobs you've applied to recently. Let's see if we can help a robot out.

You haven't actually started your training have you? Oh you. Naive, but well-intentioned. I'd consider hiring you for a real job after your 2-year stint, if only because I know you'll see how the world really works, and that throwing yourself in underprepared and uninformed to the reality of a situation is a huge mistake.

Good luck with your Teach for America gig, btw.

Well, you could go somewhere like my school (UW-Madison), pay state-school tuition, get one of the best finance/econ educations in the world, and be $0 in debt like I currently am; plus, was able to double major in a language, set myself apart due to our open curriculum options, am graduating in 4 years, and am currently deciding between 3 job offers; one with the State Dept., one with a German marketing/manufacturing firm, and one with a local Credit Union; all offering $40k+/yr, full benefits, and great opportunities to travel.

Wow. As an engineer, I don't even know what to say. How many times have you actually interviewed? "500" is a pretty meaningless number if you're just sending shit out left and right.
