College students pay plenty of taxes. Booze is taxed heavily in most places. Prisoners make their own, tax-free, booze. They call it "toilet wine".

So an election is "fair" when you disqualify large portions of voters for disagreeing with you?

I don't think felons should be banned from voting either unless they committed a political crime like fixing an election.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/10(Fri)12:38:55 No.8184449
    >implying

That students won't contribute to society by putting their education to work.

The right to vote is automatic for all right-minded adults who abide by the social contract (ie the rule of law); prisoners are demonstrably not following the rule of law therefore they must forfit their vote, along with the liberty afforded them by the social contract, as a punishment.

lol'd at the notion that college students aren't contributing to society by spending 4-8 years studying and taking on ridiculous amounts of debt to work the jobs that taco bell employees are too stupid to do.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/10(Fri)12:40:36 No.8184461
    1) Lots of people end up paying little to no tax. Discrimination based upon taxes would disfranchise about half the population. We actually used to do that in the US with landownership requirements, and poll taxes...
    2) College students generally are spending *lots* of money. It isn't as though they are neutral to the economy.
    3) College students haven't violated the social contract. They haven't done anything to make them *lose* their rights.
    4) If you haven't committed a felony, you still have the right to vote. So not all prisoners can't vote.

    >> Anonymous 04/02/10(Fri)12:45:47 No.8184516
This theory works better with old people instead of college students but it still isn't right.
Felons lose the ability to vote because they are being punished. Plus, OP's idea would have felons the only ones who can carry guns because they're some of the few who have actually used them. If you haven't shot someone, why should you be able to carry a concealed weapon?

Finally, I work and go to school. Hell, I had more income than my accountant last year, true story.

When you live in a civilised society, you have a sort of contract. If you follow the laws of the society, you have certain rights. Break the laws, and you lose the rights.
Prisoners cannot vote because they broke a law and therefore lost a right, it has little to do with how much they contribute to scoiety. Alot of prisoners have jobs inside the jail, so they contribute more than the unemployed.

Have you been snorting blocks? Have you read the constitution?!

You might as well put a voting tax so only rich people can vote. Scratch that, let's just get rid of voting all together and establish an elite electoral college that makes all the decisions.

    Oh wait........

You should have to serve in the military before you become a citizen and can vote. These bugs aren't going to kill themselves!
    >> Anonymous 04/02/10(Fri)13:16:52 No.8184863
Prisoners can't vote because they have done something so wrong that they are cast out from society. Once they've served their time, they can get the vote back. Voting is a right, not based on your contributions to society-convicts lose the right to vote for much the same reason they lose their right to own a gun. They've broken the social contract and don't get to have the same rights as those that abide by it.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/10(Fri)13:18:05 No.8184876
prisoners can't vote not because they aren't being productive (counterpoint: unemployed people can vote so its not that), they can't vote because they've proven through criminality that they care only about themselves and nothing for society, and allowing them to vote would only let them do more harm.

If you read the book, serving in the military was something that the government tried to discourage as much as possible.

That is, up until the breakout of large-scale hostilities with the Bugs.
