i use a 32 inch panasonic viera television as my monitor with HDMI output from my NVIDIA graphics card. is there something wrong with this? why haven't i seen anyone else do it?

Nothing wrong with that, generally the only time you'll use HDMI to the TV is if you watch movies etc. so its not as common.

Its not a cage, just some inventive problem solving. What you are looking at is a bunch of modular shelving, some of it I built into a shelf to hold shit to the right of the computer, and some of it I assembled to lay flat against the wall behind the desk to mount speakers on with zip-ties. Saves me a lot of time and effort to move the speakers like this when I am moving from place to place every year or so. I hate enclosed spaces.

Yep, Ive run the system in surround mode when I was in smaller rooms, the back wall is too far to reasonably manage the cords. Believe it or not the system as it is set up in the photo does deliver a surround sound experience, they key is keeping the rear speakers on the outside. Its not perfect, but it works well enough.
