Oh, man. I miss when Gummy Bears was on, even though I only remember the theme song to that show and even then only like 3 lines of it and as I recall the show was kind of daft.

A commercial break would come on, and I'd dash up the stairs as fast as I could, grab like 3-4 apples from the fridge, then practically roll back down the stairs just in time for commercials to be over. I used to think I was SO FAST because I could run up those stairs.

Nowadays, I realize I've grown so big I'd hit my head going down the stairs that fast. That house is so SMALL. And they don't make cartoons like they used to. And food just makes me fat.

    Oh god, what happened!?!?!?

I am sorry to say that in trying to prove your point you have made quite an egregious error of your own. The word "however" may or may not be followed by a comma. However, you seem to have placed a comma ever so absent-mindedly before the "however." The aforementioned comma is quite unnecessary and need never to be placed before a conjunction only to be followed by yet another comma.

You'll find that, when joining two sentences, it does serve as a conjunction. Furthermore, when used as in your example, it is an adverb (describing, in this case, the adjective "old"). This is, of course, one of those particular cases in which no punctuation is required; the vast majority of usages do require punctuation.

    Wrong, completely wrong.

The use of a comma is to signify pause in a sentence. You can have a sentence with the word "however" without a comma if you do not wish it to be read with a pause. You can have a comma before and after the word "however" if you wish pause to be added both before and after the word. You can also just have the comma before or after. All three are grammatically correct.

Get over your high school English lessons.

Let's have it your way, then. Failing to pause after the word "however" would create ambiguity, because "however" can, as another gentleman so astutely observed, be used as an adverb. Without that pause (which is to say without that comma), the second clause is correctly interpreted as "regardless of the extent to which modern sensibilities demand both". The comma is necessary to distinguish between these two cases and should therefore always be present.
