Does anyone find it strange that the Earth is so perfect? I mean, barring its temperate climate and mild atmosphere (both of which influenced evolution) we have 10x the protection of the other rocky planets.
Firstly, our crazy-powerfull magnetic shield. Our magnetic field is fucking massive, and shields us from lethal radiation from the sun, without which life as we know it could not survive.
Other planets have magnetic fields of course, but theyre pretty useless, take Mars for example. Its field is full of holes and is severely fucked up.
Then we have the ozone layer that blocks out 93-99% of the suns lethal Ultra-Violet light, that is harmfull to life, but also acts as a greenhouse gas, keeping heat trapped in the atmosphere.
Other planets have this, but not nearly as much as we do.
Then Earth just happens to be in the greenzone around the sun, a place that is the ideal distance for life to develop.
Our thick, high atmosphere protects us from meteorites, breaking them up and stopping/reducing the damage they cause.
Jupiter acts as a giant dust bunny and scoops up 90% of debri that could kill the fuck out of us if it hit Earth, thanks to its crazy-huge gravity.
The Earths rotation is stabalised by the Moon (the result of a chance collision millions of years ago) which also causes tides in our oceans.

I mean, seriously, this is literally the best fucking planet ever, anywhere.
Half of me thinks that life evolved here not by chance per-se, but rather because the conditions were so crazily perfect.
My other half thinks its way too perfect to be here by accident.

    Your thoughts /r9k/?

inb4 science-babble, if you looked at antarctica you would think Earth was hostile to life too, so stfu.
If you havnt been for a look around, you cant be 100% sure.

Everything that made Earth, Earth is by sheer luck.

For example when Theia smacked right into earth that contributed to making Earth habitable by creating the moon.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)15:54:30 No.8171497
We, along with every other organism on the planet evolved to survive in the conditions present on the planet. So yes, the enviroment of Earth is perfect for us but we were made for it, not the other way around. And yes, the Earth is a rare occurence in the Universe, it is in the perfect position in the system to support life. However, I'm sure there are other planets out there that are either similar or habor conditions that are able to support entirely different forms of life.

It's only perfect because this is where we spent X number of years living and evolving. If we started out on, say, Jupiter, then you might be thinking that Jupiter is perfect, because it possesses all of the characteristics needed to support our lives.
    >> Anonymous 04/01/10(Thu)15:55:41 No.8171509
Possibly subtle trolling, but either way, well said. Sometimes we question things that seem a little too perfect.

The common retort is the sheer number of planets; at least a few must be win. Being a sentient being on a rather ideal planet though ranks as something more than rare.

There are 1-500 billion planets in our galaxy alone, thus there is a very good chance that life extrasolar life exists and thrives in our spiral galaxy. Besides it's wrong to assume that all life in the universe resembles or functions the same as life on Earth.

I assume by perfect you mean perfect for life.

This may seem a weird coincidence until you realise we are life and thus we're only here to find it "perfect" because it is good enough to support life. If every planet had life on it then you may of had a point but since most of them don't then no.

You're thinking about it all backwards.

Too expensive to send a manned craft to a planet that has nothing particularly interesting to justify the cost.

There's a 1% chance they'll find something that'll change how we view the universe. It simply isn't worth the risk.

    There's a concept you don't get.

Things have to be suited to exist somewhere in order to exist.

With so many planets, one is bound to have right conditions. With the craziness of the universe, amazing things happen on their own.

It doesn't mean a cosmic person manipulated it to be that way.

Rovers and probes do a satisfactory job at exploring planets. I think it's a priority for the human race to find a sufficient planet that can be terraformed or can have a base on it. Earth is slowly going down the shitter. It's always nice that the human race won't die along with Earth.

That's like someone winning the lottery and you saying "wow, what are the chances that they could have a perfect lottery ticket? That couldn't happen randomly, they must have cheated somehow." No, dumbass, there's millions and millions of people buying tickets, so even though the chance of a winning is insanely slim, that chance is taken so many times that it's fairly likely that at least one person will win. It's the same with planets - yeah, the conditions for life to be possible are ridiculously rare, but considering the number of planets there are, it's pretty likely it will happen at least once. And obviously, it DID happen, otherwise we wouldn't be here to think about it.
