Usually you guys like tiers and shit, so check this pic out.

    God Tier: Systems Engineer
1st Tier: Physician Assistant, College Professor, Nurse Practitioner

Rest of the tiers + reasons for the selections are in the image. Yes, there are probably better jobs out there, but this uses ones that are available almost anywhere in the country.

    Thoughts, robots?

Its funny that in that whole pyramind, I could not find not one possible engineering major but tons of jobs that can be had with either a business major from a good school (Top 50) or a Accounting Major. Just look at CPAs, go to a decent state school that's recruited by the Big 4 Accounting Cos (usually the best one in your state), graduate with a job, work your ass off for a year, get CPA and kick back.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)23:20:57 No.8147700
I've seen this before, and it's largely bullshit.

College professor, for example? It takes a huge amount of time, effort, and luck to climb your way up to a secure professorship. The vast majority of PhDs never make it. Just getting a PhD is very difficult, and afterwards you are taking postdocs (or low-level faculty, if you're lucky) for absolute shit pay with insane hours, especially considering your high degree of education. And that's for SCIENCE professors. I imagine it's far worse for humanities PhDs.

Actually, looking at this chart, almost all of these positions are either very low-availability or very high barriers to entry. And they are all quite high-stress. There is a reason they have high salaries, after all.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)23:21:56 No.8147715
No niggers only make up 10% of the population. You are just misled by how much bitching is done by them.
    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)23:24:00 No.8147754
It seems silly to rank jobs by job satisfaction, since the jobs that are satisfying will differ from person to person. I'd be much happier as a PA than a systems engineer.

Nonexistant. Oh, did I set that up like a joke because its not, all jobs suck and rightfully so, they are JOBS.

That's my point. This chart is listing the best "jobs", but it's basically just a list of the top level of various careers. Holy shit, the jobs at the top of a career ladder are nice? Stop the presses!

Basically, the chart is deceptive--it really should list "best careers". Many of the jobs listed in the OP's would be significantly lower if you take into account the total effort needed to get them and the amount of opportunity cost each requires.

    >> Anonymous 03/30/10(Tue)23:32:15 No.8147867
I agree, it's a flawed ranking, but it's not really possible to quantify job satisfaction, the difficulty of getting a job, and various other factors.

Point is, if soulless robots were suddenly given these jobs (and credentials), the most successful robots would be those in the top tiers.

Yeah, I have a friend in IT who is in a similar position, and it makes me very glad that I decided against that career before college. He is always going on about his incredible salary, despite the fact that I've pointed out that his long hours mean that he is, on average, working twice as long as me (low-level govt scientist) for a lower hourly rate, shitty benefits, wildly varying hours (incl. being on-call all the time), and an extremely unstable job position.

A lot of other IT guys I know all seem to fall into this trap of completely forgetting to assign any value to things like leisure time or quality of life and instead just focus on their gross salary. I'm not sure why. Maybe they just assign a much higher value to discretionary income than I do?

pharmacy techs count the pills. pharmacists check the script against the drug in the bottle and the instructions on the label. they also answer questions that customers have about drugs, monitor potential drug interactions, and make sure that everything that happens in the pharmacy is in compliance with the law.

that said, pharmacists are hideously overpaid.

pharmacists used to only be trained with a bachelor's degree, then someone along the line decided that they should be in school for 6-8 years instead of 4. so now we have new pharmacists graduating from school with $80k+ in student loan debt. great example of bloat in the health care system.
