It's not necessarily the GOAL of my life, but I'd like to own a pretty expansive plot of land, have a house built to my specifications, with a laboratory and any essential scientific equipment, and raise an extraordinarily adept family worthy of being prominently known by its last name.

Well, I can't speak for OP, but my desire to buy back the family home is to do something my father never did - settle down and give his family some roots. Both my parents are extremely alienated from their immediate family, so growing up I had no cousins or whatever - just my brother (and parents). When I'm old I want to have loads of grandkids around, and to have property that I know is going to stay in my family instead of being sold off. The house in particular was built by my parents, but they sold it off when they got divorced a few years ago.

I already am, but that will change when I graduate because I don't make quite enough ($15/hr, but I'd have to pay my own benefits). Still, I may break down and not get a real corporate job after college. I can't put up with the bureaucratic bullshit and stress of working on dozens of projects I have no control over.

My family sold the house I grew up in too op. The new owners cut down the 100 year old tree in our backyard, cut up the interior of the house and moved walls to make it into 3 apartments, and during construction a fire started that burned out the back half of the building, so that part was completely rebuilt from scratch. I fucking wish I could buy it back. It no longer exists.
