I usually tip a percentage 15-20% of the total cost of the meal, but as of lately I am thought I will stick with just a straight $5. I am American, and OP here in America waitresses and waiters get paid well below minimum wage anywhere from 20% to 50% less pending the state, and then also a lot of times they have to split their earnings with busboys, valets, table assigners, list goes on. So to not tip is to screw them out of a decent earning or something above minimum wage. Typical minimum wage is $5-8, in my opinion they should make no more than $12 an hour. I will tip only $5 from now on especially if they are serving more than one table.

Not only this, but many restaurants have a policy where they have to show how much they got tipped. It can be tracked if the waitress is lying.

American waiters are not paid shit except for a random tip. It's a sloppy bullshit system that everybody hates.

You know why tipping is so important in the US?

Because you're the one paying them for their service, not their employer. Certain jobs are ASSUMED to get a given amount in tips. Not only does this allow employers to pay them less than minimum wage, but then they get taxed as if they were making more. It is completely possible and far too common for people to LOSE money by working a shift.

If you grew up outside the US and are surprised with what you find here, then what you're seeing is actually the employers that managed to get away with an exemption from labor laws. The reason your waitress wants a tip is because she's working and she wants to be paid for her work.

If you think it's bullshit then don't take it out on the workers, they're not the ones who put this system into practice.

I have a system. I look for a few things:

1) Most importantly, keep my drink refilled. I get really thirsty when I eat.
2) Be moderately friendly. I don't expect flirtation or overly-bubbly waiters/waitresses, just decent people who are friendly.
3) I know how shit works, so I don't need my food "ASAP," as long as it's within reason, you're good.

As long as those three things are present, I'll tip around 15%, average. I'll tip excessively if the person is particularly friendly, or does something special (I had one waitress move all of our stuff while we were at the buffet once because she knew where our favorite seat was and it wasn't available until then.)

I've also had a waiter that served us our food and then went to lean against the bar and talk to his co-worker, and never visited us again. Probably fifteen or twenty minutes passed after running out of drink before I got up and went to the bar, stood beside him, and asked the bartender to give me a refill of sprite.

I left a penny for the tip, to make sure he knew that I didn't forget to tip him.
