Nationalism is even more important now than it was in the past. What with home grown terrorism and the large amount of immigration occurring, we need something to provide a balance to "parasitic migrants"(Daily Mail, I expect a job offer).
What I mean is whether you like this or not, there are immigrants who only come to a country to extract wealth and use it to their own benefit elsewhere.
This in itself is not a bad thing, however in certain people, this mentality can generate a mindset where everything associated with the host nation is seen as something to be exploited. As a result, such people hold little or no respect for things like law and order, community values or public transportation. This problem is only exaggerated when the person who only came to the country to "get rich quick", finds themselves unwilling to return to their own country, maybe, due to political/financial instability, or simply a worse infrastructure than their host country.
