Yeah, /b/ is a shithole in a completely different way now. It used to be a place where things were actually disturbing, and some funny stuff actually came out of it. Now, it's just 12 year olds, spammers, and camwhores. Comepletely different style of shithole. As a example, Faces of Death and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs are both horrible movies, but for different reasons.

/b/ used be called Anime and Random where anime fans become stupid for laughs. But for some reason around 2006-2007 it slowly changed over to completely Random for reasons unknown. Probably due to the expansion of the imageboards.

By that time it used to be the place for place where disturbing shit, and some funny stuff as well. So it's not just for anime fan to act stupid, it's for every 4channer to act dumb on purpose.

There's still funny stuff if you're willing to fresh the front page every 5 seconds. As for the rhetorical question: "If /b/ is shit, why does it exist?" It's unique from other western-style forums, and from a freedom of speech perspective it might be offensive but I defend the right to produce and express that kind of speech.
