i'm having a hard time with unemployment.

i grad'd 2006 in communications/poli sci. i wanted to work in political media. I figured i'd get my foot in the door at a local TV or radio station ad work my way up.

after working at rentacenter and as a security guard, i got a job writing political ads. not the worst job, but it only lasted 4 months. pay was $500 a week plus a $2500 bonus at the end of 4 months. like i said, not awful.

since then (2008 election) i've been unemployed and broke. i've sent out 232 applications and i haven't gotten one interview. the only jobs i can get pay less than my unemployment check -- figuring in that plus the cost of gas, i'd lose my apartment if i took a job.

I'm starting to go nuts. sometimes i want to pick out someone with a nice car and stab them to death in the street just for being lucky.

    Go teach english in Korea.

You will get a free apartment and 2000 a month, which is a lot there. After that, you will have a much better thing on your resume to launch from.

Or you can just keep teaching there.

If you're a guy, you will also get laid. A lot.

And they will even cover your plane ticket.

I could say you chose a pretty terrible field to work in but that wouldn't help much. Is there any skill you have that you could cash on ? I'm thinking manual skills like mechanics or plumbing. There's always work for this kind of skills. It might even be worth getting some training to acquire them rather than doing nothing and wait years for the recession to end.

    hi fellow robutt,

I lost my job this past week and have filed for unemployment.
I worked hard to get the job that I had and now I feel it went to shit. I went from homeless to my first apartment and first car in 3 years, and now I have a month of living expenses and no job. Life has just given me a shitstorm.

I can't help much, but I want to say good luck. ): I wish I could stab rich people too.

Wealthy and even middle class Koreans want a real "Westerner" to teach their kids so that they get the pronunciation right.

It's an awesome gig, pay is 2kish a month with your rent and living expenses covered, cost of living well there would be around 400 a month.

I have no problem supporting people who are going through a hard time. However, a guy who hasn't worked in two years and isn't grasping at anything, well, what am I supposed to say?

"It's okay, we'll take care of you forever?"

Life is not easy, but he has a degree (which he is wasting) and he has some great options. Instead of taking them he is checking some boxes and getting cash.

I'm all for helping a guy get off his feet and I feel for him. But doing something really is for his own good. If you care about someone you want them to have a life they can be proud of-- right now I don't think he sounds proud at all. I think he sounds defeated, tired, and is limiting himself from living a better life.

So I am telling him what his best option is. And you know what, spending a two year vacation working 30 hours a week and playing around in a foreign country?

That's a sweet deal. And after that job he would qualify for GS9 level government jobs in the US which pay better than most private sector jobs. And have way better healthcare and benefits.

I am mad that he is not living up to his potential and that he is making excuses rather than progressing in his life. And I should be mad.

The demand is still very high and the pay is still very good. 2.4million wong a month, and you get an apartment all set up.

Hey everyone. I am in a similar situation to the OP, only I'm not there yet. I am currently a 3rd year Poli Sci major. My grades are so-so, and I have zero work or internship experience, but I'm attending a pretty well-regarded school (top 25-30th in the nation).

    1. Do I need more experience to teach ESL? Or just the degree, basically?

    2. What are the pros and cons between Korea and Japan?

    3. Are there certain cities to avoid / aim for?
