    I'm from Pittsburgh, PA, USA.

It's an affordable place to live, lots of small ethnic communities, and it really is beautiful. But there's a lot of crime, and the weather is terrible.

I've lived all over the country, but I currently reside in Austin, Texas.

Pic is closest to how I remember it from before I moved out in my early teens. It has changed... back in the years directly after the democratisation (~1990-1995?), blocks of flats used not to be painted in such showy, bright colours...

    I miss the old times. That's why I like photos from North Korea. ;_;

It's really not that bad. When you're a little kid you don' give a fuck. It's the same shit as being in a city in that regard. You find people your age and you do stuff. Worst comes to worst you have to get your mom to drive you somewhere.
It's when you hit about 20 or so and realize the entire place lacks any culture whatsoever that it starts getting mindnumbing. But I don't blame it for that. It was built for people to raise families in. That is literally it's purpose. Cheap housing for newlyweds and their spawn.
Long Island can be a very beautiful place, but for the most part the default mindset everybody who comes here has is "meh". Because really, it's just 125 miles of urban sprawl and housing.
    >> Anonymous 12/16/11(Fri)19:15:54 No.763020
    Define hometown.

I grew up in a small town in Ontario. It was nice enough once you got past the hicks, but I'm never going back now.

My home is Montreal. I am far more at home in a city than any town, and I know it as well as I knew the town in Ontario, even though I haven't lived here as long. Honestly, though, I probably won't stay more than a couple more years here, I want to try other places. Home is just where I am at the moment, there's nowhere ultimately that I think I should be. Montreal as awesome, though.

    Pros:
-Jerbs, jerbs, jerbs. Seriously, what recession?
-Best place to live in the world if you play music professionally (like me)
-Fantastic music happening SOMEWHERE every night of the week
-Great local culture with museums, art cinemas, and so forth
-The Alamo Fucking Drafthouse. Real food + movies + special showings of awesome stuff all the time.
    -Tex-Mex
-End of an Ear is the greatest record store ever
-You can go out dressed however you please, nobody really gives a shit

    Cons:
-Slowly dying thanks to an influx of Californians looking for jerbs, the condos they're moving in to crying about the live music being too loud, and a city council that's completely pants-on-head retarded
-Even I, a relatively liberal guy, find a lot of people here swing way too far to the left
-90% of UT kids are the worst people you'll ever meet
    -Hipsters, hipsters everywhere
-Usually ok if a little hot during the summer, but some years (such as this past one) it's absolutely unbearable, with monthlong stretches of 105 degree plus weather at like 90% humidity

Born here, raised here, going to die here. I'm not fucking leaving no matter how many yuppie Californians jam their way in. I will be that crotchety old man reminding youngsters about the good ole days when Austin had less than a million people and there were still places to see music that didn't charge $40 a head.

At some point of the early 2000's we had a total war being held in the slums and I'm not talking about this gang against the other, I'm talking about paramilitary right-wing forces against left-wing militias against the forces of the state, all of them fighting for the control of the drug territories. The war has now turned to be between two of the most big mafias in the world. You have 12 year old kids fighting for their side, some crazy shit happening in there. The law it's only allowed to punish people older than 18, so you have these gangs recruiting 14 and 15 year olds to do the dirty jobs.

As I said before, I don't live in those places but I'm sure a lot more crazy things happen in there and there are probably tons of stories about crime and shit in there.

Colombia has been growing as a country in the past years, I won't deny that but everything you have heard about Colombia... in reality it's probably ten times worse.

    everything is very expensive
everything is corrupt so nothing improves (mass transit, the police, etc)
too many new yorkers move down here and then complain about how much better new york is (then go back, we won't miss you)
all the people who move in from the rest of the US make sporting events awful to go to (more mets/phillies fans there than marlins fans, more knicks fans than heat, etc)
weather during the summer is like a circle of hell

I did leave, for college. I went to a school in western massachusetts and then to one in Sarasota. The one in West Mass was pretty cool except when it snowed (I hated it) and the change to a rural surrounding was very new to me. same fag forgot the pros and cons

pros- close to a lot of shit, lots of people, lots of shit to do, right by manhattan, easy to get weed, etc.

cons- my whole family is from there so there's a lot of people who know me/my family so it can be a little restrictive, know too many people there i don't like, and surprisingly the whole small town everyone knows everyone shit doesn't just apply to small towns works that way in brooklyn too

i did leave, i live in the middle of nowhere right now gonna move to philly soon...i love brooklyn/the city but i'd like to be far away from the people i knew there...don't really want to get re-involved in all the bullshit there.

    Wassup LI bro.

    >Valley Stream, NY
    >Generic suburb of NYC that has become increasingly urbanized as time goes on
    >Pros: Schools were good when I was in 'em, shopping close I suppose, beach and Manhattan ~30 minutes away by train or car (on a good day), Summers ain't bad, used to be a fun village to ride bikes around with your high school friends, a few 24 hour places open these days
    >Increase in cost of living (~$20 by train to get to Manhattan), no "downtown" area to hang out in, no main strip, increasing urbanization has led to apartments being built (tl, dr: niggers everywhere now), school system turning to shit, no money to fund public works, shopping districts now full of dangerous minorities (the walmart trampling happened here, lots of car thefts, etc)

It was nice in 2006. Not so much anymore. I graduated HS in '08 and that was probably the last good time. My mother, who has held on thinking it'll bounce back recently told me that she's considering moving when I do because it's getting pretty bad. Three fires over the past year at major restaurants, a murder or two and thousands of niggers have made it pretty bad.
    >>766188
There's a reason why we call the Sunrise Multiplex the Murderplex. It's an awful, awful place and the mall has been going steadily downhill since that fucking Walmart was built. I tell people who ask I'm from Lynbrook now, since I'm right on the border.

    Bergen, Norway

    Pros:
    >Beautiful city with amazing old architecture at some parts.
    >surrounded by tall mountains, which are beautiful to watch and hike in
    >Perfectly sized, not too big but not to small either.
    >Good developed culture, loads of festivals held here, probably the most art centered city in Norway. The theaters always arrange things also (that's not just shit to get us spending money)
Like cultural movie exchanges and so on.

    Cons:
    >It goddamned rains all the fucking time. ALL THE FUCKING TIME. We set a record on it some while back.
    >Getting infested with sandniggers like the whole of Norway.

-I left once for school to live in Oslo, but that was mostly because I wanted to get away from my parents and it was the only school open to take me in with a dorm. I'll probably leave again because my whole network is down there now.
But I love Bergen and would probably chose to stay there if I could choose between any other city in the world.

-wont give specific details but I live about 30 mins from the city, halfways up in one of the mountains

    Pros:
    >Excellent place to raise a family
    >Crime tends to stay in one part of the city
    >Weather isn't too bad
    >A lot of people can be friendly, have southern hospitality, etc.

    Cons:
    >NOTHING TO FUCKING DO
    >A car is absolutely essential, Raleigh is extremely spread out and we don't have a decent public transportation system because of it
    >Drugs are scarce, weed's expensive when you do eventually find it.
    >Hardly any jobs, especially entry level/minimum wage. They are completely taken over by illegal immigrants.
    >Public schools are trash, except for the magnet schools.
    >A lot of religious conservatives
    >One of the only good music venues got torn down to become a Kerr Drug
    >Every restaurant is a chain restaurant. Hardly any non-chain places except for downtown.
    >So many of the chicks around here are either religious freaks, aren't comfortable with sex, or are fucking carbon copies of each other

Pros: good food everywhere, lots to do, public transportation is bountiful though a bit crowded at times (six million people alone use the metro system every single day), again just soooo huge that there's always something to explore or see if you look for it

cons: risk of being kidnapped or mugged (or just phone-scammed), some parts of the city are honestly pretty grimy and dirty, the smog!! air quality varies, feels too crowded sometimes, drivers are pretty dangerous when you are on a bike (fuck you microbus drivers, fuck you!!)

I grew up in Elgin, IL.

Pic is a church I remember riding by regularly.

What a wretched hive of scum and villainy. They had seperate school buildings for k-6, then 7-8, then again for 9-12. My family moved out before my 9th grade year, and I couldn't be more thankful.

7-8 was the worst. I was bussed half way across town, in the interest of integration. I am white, and was in the minority at that school (mostly blacks and hispanics). I was in 7 fights in total my 7th and 8th grade years, 1 each for the 6 major gangs (hey esse, you can' walk down this stairwell), and one in shop class with a white trash asshole.

During my 8th grade year, I was too advanced in math, and they had me go to the High School half way across town in the other direction to take math (mostly HS Juniors in the class). I got to witness the first school stabbing in Elgin's history; 2 gang banging pieces of shit decided shouting shit at each other wasn't enough.

Fuck I'm glad to be gone from there.

I'm getting the fuck out of here once I graduate college and moving to New York.

pic related, it's the exit you would take to get to my house (thanks wikipedia)

Great thread, I'm halfway through reading it atm, posting in case it 404s while I write (happens everytime).

Hull, England. Other side of UK from Liverpool, about halfway between London and Edinburgh.

    Pros:
    >England, therefore relatively civilised
    >A short ferry ride from Amsterdam (therefore lots of cheap drugs to be found in Hull)
    >People are very down to earth and (mostly) friendly
    >Decent nightlife (if you know where to find the "alternative" clubs)
    >All my stuff is here
    >Lots of history (English civil war started here)
    >No religious people (Pagan corridor - Like the bible belt in reverse)
    >Weather's pretty good, hot and sunny in summer, snowy in winter

    Cons:
    >Place is dirty, half the city looks like it's under construction, the other half is covered in dogshit. On the council estate I grew up on I'd frequently find used heroin syringes on the street
    >We have more than our share of chavs and crazy people
    >I think we came top of a European poll of obesity. I believe Hull has topped smoking, drinking, obesity and teenage pregnancy tables of the UK in the last five years. Sounds cooler than it is
    >"Kingston Communications" has a telecommunications monopoly over the city, and they provide shitty internet
    >Immigrants everywhere (most of them are cool though) and locals are really racist
    >Built on a massive flood plain. A few years ago we flooded so much a guy died

I've been to Wales, France, Spain (a few times), Germany, US and various places in southern England. Always came back here though.

    Pros:
    >not too large, but large enough to provide plenty of entertainment
    >over 50% of adults have a university degree, one of the highest for any city anywhere
    >also azn-tier school system
    >very marginal amount of nikkas to cause problems
    >public transportation to anywhere
    >women are easy
    Cons:
    >quite expensive, not too bad considering the PPP
    >almost half of the year cold as fuck
    >geographically not in the best spot if you consider travelling
    >people like to keep to themselves unless drunk or if you're not strangers (might be a pro as well)

    Pros/cons of living there?
    >PROS
    >College town, neat little suburb with some interesting places.
    >Lots of farmland on outskirts
    >Beautiful in the summer, nice and quiet in the winter
    >Very nice people, great library w/ no late fees, everything in walking distance where I lived.
    >Linked to Portland, Westbrook and South Portland, all within a 30 minute drive.
    >No wangsters except in the high school.
    CONS
    >High school not as good as most others, and no, I'm not saying so in spite.
    >No night life, really.
    Did you ever leave?
    > Yes, left for Manchester, NH for college. Disgusting city, would transfer but love my friends too much.

Pic related. The olde asbestos filled middle school, which was pretty cool if you like classic schools. Now a municipal center minus the asbestos.

We moved to Wisconsin Dells, WI, on some vacation property my parents owned.

I couldn't have asked for anything better, and I'm dead serious about that.

Yes, we have the tourists to deal with, and they are assholes, but there's no shortage of work in the hospitality industry, and overall the town is peaceful, quiet and has almost zero crime.

I remember when I moved up here, the WEEKLY newspaper for the Dells would run the entirety of police reports for the week. It took up 3/4 of the page. And most of them were underage smoking, jaywalking, someone hit a deer, and drunk driving without injury (it's Wisconsin, *sigh*).

I've not left. I've lived in and around the Dells for the past 18 years (with a short 6-month stint in Madison, WI), and really do not want to leave.

    Oulu, Finland

    Pros:
    -Small (the cozy kind)
-Has a university and good studying possibilities in general
    -People are relatively nice
    -Good art/music scene

    Cons:
-Two hig-crimerate city districts (I've lived in both)
    -Public transportation is ASS
    -Hard to find good apartments
    -Shitty job market

    St. Louis Missouri
    Pros:
Not too big not too small
    The Loop is pretty chill
Has lots of sports and amusement parks
Only a few hours from Chicago or the Lake of the Ozarks
Some of the suburbs are ranked amongst the best places to live in the US
    Cons:
If you go out at night in North/East St. Louis you will likely be raped/murdered by a nigger
Only a few miles from Hicks/jesus freaks
    Super segregated between races
The Rams suck and Pujols is gone
I've left plenty, I've been to every state in the US except the Dakotas Alaska and Maine. I've been to Mexico, Canada, South Africa, and Mozambique. I'm moving to Ireland next summer.

    Where is it?
Schenectady, NY. Part of New York's capitol region, along with Albany (the actual capitol) and Troy. The three are mostly there because it is where the Hudson and the Mohawk rivers meet

    Pros/cons of living there?
Pros: -Real fucking pizza (pic related).
-Actually, you can get just about any food from any corner of the world there, and most of it is fucking delicious.
-Proctor's Theater; real art and culture, the owners show movies on it all the time, everything from classics to modern anime.
-Good schools, a few universities around, as a result a lot of intelligent people.
-Beautiful weather. Great parks within close proximity.
-Stockade district and lots of character and historical preservation all the way back to pre-Revolution.
    Cons:
-Manufacturing and GE were the main source of jobs in the city and the whole reason why it prospered without turning into an urban wasteland like Albany and Troy after manufacturing jobs started becoming strictly overseas business. This did shut down the steel mill on the Mohawk near where I lived (recently demolished) In the '90s, GE kept laying off tons of people, some of them parents of friends. Divorce, drugs, suicide followed.
-Speaking of drugs, Schenectady is a major stop on the I-87/I-90 drug corridor. If you read Uticabro's post above there is something of a similar situation in that the Mafia is pretty much guaranteed to be behind ant successful political candidate, used car dealership, Italian community center, junkyard, etc. The police are complicit; there were details here but hurr field too long. Basically I grew up watching the law being broken and it being fine so long as everyone got paid.

    Did you ever leave?
    Yep.

    If so, where?
    All over.

    Pro's
    >Nice area, industrialized and very modern but at the same time has areas that provide you some privacy with ranch areas, while still being able to access town in 5-10 minutes of driving. Best of both worlds
    >Good kind of mexicans, hard working and very humble. Everybody seems to get along rather well
    >Good job opportunities due to bordering houston and the woodlands
    >Very little roody poo's
    >25-35 minutes from Sam Houston, 35-45 from A&M
    >Nice community college

    Con's
    >Lack of small business at times since chain restaurants, strip malls, and walmarts dominate the area
    >Numerous cliche middle-upper middle class gated neighborhoods who all look like they were made by the same contractor. NUMEROUS of these, will find at least 2 gated neighborhoods every half mile.

This is fucking true, I can't believe we are this retarded. Low level english isn't even that difficult to learn.

    >>770014
Dude, it's that kind of speach that makes people hate us.

inb4 Paris sucks, don't go there if your interest is meeting nice people.

Why should we care about it ?!
It's our country, it's not an Anglo-Saxon one, not an Italian one, it's France, home of the French, who speak French.
Stop being so americanized already, stand for your culture or it will be gone in 100 years.
I speak english, so of course i help tourist when they ask me for something.
    > " makes people hate us."
Again who the fuck care ? We're still the most visited country in the whole world.
    Stand for something brethren.

I wrote this in English because i want you guys to be able to understand what we're saying, because it's an English imageboard and it's /r9k/ and not /int/.

Ok so let me get this straight :
A whole nation have to learn a foreign language in order to welcome tourists.
But wait, when you're visiting a country then it mean that you're showing interests for the said country, so it makes sense to learn the local language right ?
    Where's the logic ?

    Sydney, Australia

    Pros:
    >Good weather most year round (cool in the winter, hot and sunny in the summer, but not humid)
    >Australia's biggest city, so we get a lot of international attention, celebrities, news, etc.
    >Decent enough night-life
    >largely cosmopolitan atmosphere, great place to grow up
    >no massive social problems (little actual poverty, there are gangs etc. but if you're not involved you're not involved)

    Cons:
    >It's fucking HUGE. For a city of 4 million people I wouldn't be surprised if it had the same geographic area as New York.
    >This means it's divided as fuck - you wouldn't recognise the eastern part of the city if you grew up in the west
    >Western suburbs full of immigrant gangs, racists, conservative fucktards
    >not so much "culture" here, and nothing truly remarkable about this place
    >expensive weed (up to $20 g)

It's a good place to live in and I love it heaps, but unless you make your own life-changing experiences you won't come off with a "holy shit that was amazing" view of this city.

    >University/college city
    >Economically, politically, geologically stable
    >A couple of hours away from Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa and the US.
    >Downtown area is quite beautiful

    Cons
    >Aging city
    >7 or 8 prisons in the area (mentioned on Law and Order SVU though)
    >Awful OHL team

    Dunmanway, West Cork, Ireland
Pros: The young people are pretty fun, always good times to be had in town on holidays. Not too far away from all the fun places in West Cork, and an hour away from Cork city, which isn't too bad. And, uh... we just got an Aldi?
Cons: Apparently has a reputation for being rough, although I've lived here all my life and I only heard that the other day. There's hippies fucking everywhere, the school's a shithole, there's no proper shops and only one restaurant which barely counts as a restaurant. And yet we have 7 hairdressers. How the fuck does that work?

I've never lived anywhere else, although I'll be moving away in September for university. I've been to England, France, Wales, Spain, and Morocco.

Because it's one of the most competitive universities in the UK, maybe? It's not easy to get in. There's a very strange distinction in both Oxford and Cambridge between the students and the inhabitants, most people who live there don't go there for university because it's fucking difficult.

I wasn't the guy who posted the first thing about Cambridge, but I'll respond anyway.

There is no link between growing up in Cambridge and going to Cambridge University. I live in Edinburgh and I hope to go there next year, and my chances of doing so are not lessened by me living 300 miles away. Just living there doesn't give you an automatic ticket in, or even give you any sort of benefit whatsoever in the admissions process. It's not an "opportunity", just a coincidence.
