I saw a thread a while back on willfully homeless living and I thought it'd been archived, but was never able to locate it again. Anyway, I'm very interested in such a lifestyle and would like to discuss it further.

    pros:
    no rent/mortgage = mo' money

    cons:
    illegality

I don't really know much about it, actually. Anybody with experience living homelessly?
    >> Anonymous 02/21/10(Sun)18:40:10 No.7606268

It's illegal if you don't have more than $10 on you at any time, and you're not allowed to pan-handle without buying a license.

People are conditioned to think of a house or apartment as security. This couldn't be further from the truth. Houses burn, they blow away in the wind, they're washed away in the water. You can lose your home due to things you have no control over. Don't pretend insurance will cover you, either. Insurance companies are corporations and their bottom line is profit, so in the long run, they're a losing proposition to you-- if not, they wouldn't keep in business! You think you're covered, and then comes Hurricane Katrina.

Now imagine you have the skills and know-how to survive, and thrive, without an apartment. You've developed these skills during good times, when you could have afforded an apartment if you really wanted. And now, here come some bad times. The economy turns to crap, you lose your job, whatever. Suddenly, you have a lot less pressure on your shoulders. Getting evicted? No biggy!

It's kind of like being a non-driver when fuel prices go up. You know what I was thinking a few years ago when fuel prices started soaring? I was thinking, "Big deal!" I didn't drive, so it didn't really affect me directly.

Who's more secure? An elite ninja who could, if needed, survive in a post-apocalyptic zombie-infested nuclear winter? Or some chump with a condo and a few thousand dollars a month mortgage payment? I'm that ninja-- and you can be, too.

My dad was homeless even when me and my mom had a house and they were still married (she would visit him after work and sometimes sleep over in his truck). He chose to live in the street because it feels more free he said, but he would wonder how the people that would stay homeless for 5-10 years at a time could handle it. He parked his truck on the same street that the soup kitchen was on and his day was basically walking around visiting other homeless friends (to see who had alcohol), stopping by grocery stores on the days they throw out food past its expiration date (which is ALWAYS still good), and watching drive in movies with other homeless friends at the drive-in (that they never went in, their was a hill that had a great view of the movie + sound)

you run out of things to do very fast when you don't have money.....this is why they drink, among other things.

I don't want to be homeless, I want to have my own piece of land and enjoy the comforts of life.

But I do want to get to the point where it's very inexpensive to maintain my lifestyle. I don't want much, I don't desire a $100k sports car. I want to own a house, have enough to live decently, and enough to afford a toy every so often.

My father didn't have a stable home for pretty much age 20 to age 30, not because he was without one, but because he wanted to. Although frankly I think it was his way of coping with the early death of his parents.

He traveled all over the United States and South America, worked at morgues and circuses and oil pipelines and almost becoming a drug lord.

I truly believe it helped him grow as a man and as a human being.

We don't talk about it much, but I've been mapping out the places he talked about, making adjustments to my own path, and soon I will leave.

In many cities, the following are crimes:
    * Not having a fixed place to live
    * Having under $100 on you at any time
    * Lying in a public place
    * Urinating / defecating on the sidewalk
    * Stinking so badly that you cause an offense to others

Well they can incarcerate you, impound your vehicle, plant false evidence on you if you comply with a search of your vehicle, beat the shit out of you, take what stuff you do have. Give you endless lectures of why you're a stain on the body of society.

Being homeless kind of eliminates what human rights you come to expect in life. Police, the public, even halfway-houses give you those knowing glances that the life you're living here, now, is not a life worth living.

Homelessness is a freedom, but many times it comes at a high price.

Medieval Edinburgh had a good solution to homelessness.

If they caught you on the street after curfew, they would imprison you until morning, then whip you.

If they discovered that you had the scars of a former whipping, then they would torture you to death; otherwise they would then release you.

Nowadays, we just have the police shooting homeless, and the occasional civic spirited teen cleaning up the streets by bringing light and warmth to the dark corners of the city with a couple of bottles of kerosene, and some matches.

In some places, like Detroit, the winters take care of most of the homeless, and the few bands of the "eaters" pick off the rest one at a time for their special meals.

months off and on through fall and winter when I was supposed to be at college, trying to get in the mindset of doing it for larger lengths of time.

I also used to do community service in homeless shelters as a Boy Scout, when I first started doing that we didn't get to talk to them much, if at all, but later when I could drive, I started trading cigarettes for stories.

Some people were voluntary, but would only admit it out of earshot of others, others were addicts or mentally ill, moreso than any motherfucker on this site.

They all had stories, some stranger than others.

instead of homeless, i'd buy a van and a heater and sleep comfortably in it. wallmart allows you to park in their parkinglot 24/7.

i'd use public water fountain or faucet for water, buy food at a grocery store daily (no fridge), use city or library or coffee/book shop free net, sleep in the van on a futon and insulate the van, wash clothes and go to the bathroom in a public washroom.

the best i can think of for showers would be just wash your body down in a public washroom. or maybe if there was a public pool. or maybe a clean pond/lake people swam in.

I live close by to a very secluded wooded lot, so I made a shelter and brought a sleeping bag with me out there. Howerver, it rained on me for the third night so I left to go back to my parent's house. I also had money on me and went to a grocery store to buy food for one of the nights / i also brought some with me. My biggest fear is that I would run out of food fast living on my own far away from a town. I've never gone hunting before, never trapped, and have little knowledge of eatable greenery. So any tips for how easy it is to pick up those skills would be nice.

Well you can start tonight by reading eating local plants, then you can move into fishing, then move into small game animals.

i don't, but what do you advise for making a regular size car more sleepable? if the backseats don't fold down into the trunk, wouldn't sleeping in a reclined frontseat be a little uncomfortable after a while?

There's this thing called the "car cot" because it's goes on top of the front seat and makes the seat more leveled, so you can get a good night sleep.

Too bad I can't find the link to the website that sells it :(

If you're serious you can always remove the backseats if it doesn't fold..

Specific literature? I've used the U.S. army manual, S.A.S. survival guide (which is a little more vague than its American counterpart, but still good nonetheless), old Boy Scout handbooks, nutrition guides, maps on whatever region you're in.

While a basic shelter is good, you should have a couple tarps with you, one with which to overlay on your shelter, and then of course you can fold one over on your sleeping bag to keep out a majority of the moisture if it rains.

Online there are multiple blogs on bushcraft, lashings, ultralight hiking, cheap recipes when you're either flat out broke or just in the wilderness and you need to scrounge up stuff.

I remember someone said, van dwelling is the "aristocrat of homeless" but homeless is relative.

Isn't earth our home? Homeless people aren't homeless, they're HOUSELESS.

How does afford (other than steal, I guess) gas for a car when homeless? Unless you somehow aren't jobless.

I wouldn't know, but I think the best route would be getting a part-time job, and getting a biz mailing address. I pay $10 a month for mine and it's in a suite address. I get my tax return, driver license, etc to that address.

You need some sort of income unless you're 100 percent homeless and living in the woods LOL

You can have a job and still be homeless.

    1. Don't sleep excessively close to where you work.
    2. Pack up whatever you use to sleep before you arrive at said workplace.
    3. Keep up appearances. Groomed, shaved, don't smell offensive.
    4. You want to maintain a facade of normal existence. This means a phone number, an address, and perhaps even a bank account depending on the method of payment.

Phone is easy, just grab a pay-as-you-go.
Address is a little harder as these days a P.O. box will throw up a few flags, try to find like a UPS store of some other variation and set up a mailing address there, it will be a real street address.
The bank account is just so you can cash checks without the hassle of trying to come up with a reason as to why it always ends up as cash. Plus you'd be stupid to have all your money on hand.
