Probably not the best place to ask but it has been bugging me for some time

I was around 13/14 at the time, I can't remember how the discussion started but while in school we had a black guy in our class, nice guy and all and i had no problems with him previous to the incident.

But something arose about heritage and he said something like "I'm very proud of my black heritage"

I asked him in the class (not meaning to come of as racist but it was a serious question) "Why are you so proud of your black heritage?"

Nobody said anything or really reacted until he got very defensive and called me a racist and ignorant etc etc, then the teacher who had previously said nothing before sent me out of the class, i had to go to the principle, got a huge lecture about how racism will not be tolerated in her school and i was given detention for the rest of the week.

I tried to explain to her that it wasn't supposed to be derogatory to him, i was just wanting to know what it was about black heritage that made him so proud. She was having none of it though.

From then on in i was known as the ignorant racist kid, i got death stares from the black guy who never spoke to me again.

I'm still yet to find out what it is that makes black people proud of their heritage, can somebody enlighten a racist, ignorant bigot?

The only thing I'd say was wrong with what you said is the way you phrased it. If you asked what makes you proud of your black heritage it might have sounded better. Anyway, it didn't deserve the massive overreaction it got. I'm fortunate enough to know many black people so I can't be branded a racist.

Man, i grew up in brooklyn and went to ghetto ass schools my whole childhood, and if that happend in my school than that person would be stabbed the next day.

I grew up in the asshole of nowhere, it wasn't a racist community, the main reason being that we never saw any black people and so there was never an issue or reason to discuss like in more multicultural towns or cities.

I saw the first black person (in real life/face to face) when i went to high school but i had no reason to dislike them and had never been taught to (still don't)

There's really no reason to be proud of your heritage. You contributed nothing to make it what it was in the past and unless you happen to be an exceptional you have nothing to offer in your life. I'm mixed race and I couldn't care less about my heritage.

That said even if you want to proud of your race being proud of being black is a poor place to start. Aside from moving humanity out of Africa, blacks have done nothing of worth.
