Protip: I've listened to dozens if not hundreds of TED.com talks by now. The general rules are:
- 18 minutes or less (and yes, you will get pulled for going over)
- no politics
- no reading from books or lecture notes
- A/V materials are typically shunned

Essentially, you take someone incredibly smart and interesting (usually a scientist or researcher) and ask them to distill all their knowledge into something that will fit their allotted time. This often results in pure awesomeness.
