here, our public schools are just as bad. I went to city public schools
throughout my education and the only one that was worth anything was
the magnet high school for the arts I went to. However, if I
recall correctly, American public schools are some of the absolute worst
in the world, so I don't really have any advice to give you. There is
an interesting experiment in Harlem, NY (this is one of the worst, most
crime-ridden neighborhoods in the US for those of you not from around
here) called the Harlem Children's School. It's a school where they
focus on the social aspects of education, like teaching the kids to look
people in the eye when they talk to others, how to develop study
habits, etc. It's been shockingly successful, way more than anyone
though, so they've been trying to implement the program in other areas. Here's
an NY times article about it:

way, I know the UK's educational system is very different from ours, but
if you have to equivalent of 'magnet schools' (schools specialized in a
discipline like visual arts, maths and sciences, foreign languages,
etc) you should try to teach at one of those. Generally the parents who
try to get their kids into one of those actually give a shit about their
children's well-being and thus their kids are less likely to be
complete fuck-offs.
