Gentlemen, today I went back to school.
I'm 24. I'm a britfag. I'm vaguely interested in teaching and a teacher friend of mine invited me to sit and watch. I have an MA in Economics, so I'm qualified to teach mid-level maths and 6th form Econ. We cleared it with his school; I arrived at 08.30.

By 10.30 there had been two fights, a scratching, and a lot of shouting. The staff are stressed. The headmaster is stressed. Barely anyone can keep control. Kids are hopped up on sugar and grease in the guise of breakfast. Touching a kid can get you suspended due to child protection laws. False allegations of teacher > kid abuse are rife. Staff have been assaulted before now. The place is a hothouse and there's precious little learning going on.

Other nations have done it. How the hell do we straighten up our schools and turn little terrors into thinking citizens?

In Britain most kids are fine in Primary school but then turn into little shits at Secondary school.

    BRING BACK THE CANE.

stop all the legislation that makes teachers unable to do anything to control their classes.

Also don't let drug addicts, criminals, and other scum of society have children.

Also generally make parents raise their children better. For people from broken homes, this means mandatory child raising classes before child birth.

we have a youth problem because there isn't a family culture anymore.

Asian (meaning not just east asian) children nearly all obey their parents, and most asian families are stable. The parents are strict with their children.

Britain doesn't really have that any more.

Tell them there is a massive secret about the education system and that you will only tell them the secret at the end of their education and will only tell them if the class has an average grade of B.

    But....there is no secret :3.

More grammar schools, let the students with the ability actually do well. I went to a grammar school, I'm so glad I did. There's still a lot of the shit you get in comps, but not nearly to the same degree.

Figure out a way to be that cool badass teacher all the students like. Teaching sounds like a really shit job, but some people are just naturally amazing at it.

You need to make the kids want to learn, not stand there and homework them to death.

At the same time you probably need to challenge them, instead of teaching garbage like spouse abuse, gender / race equality, how to hold hands under a rainbow.

Amerifag here, our public schools are just as bad. I went to city public schools throughout my education and the only one that was worth anything was the magnet high school for the arts I went to.

However, if I recall correctly, American public schools are some of the absolute worst in the world, so I don't really have any advice to give you. There is an interesting experiment in Harlem, NY (this is one of the worst, most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the US for those of you not from around here) called the Harlem Children's School. It's a school where they focus on the social aspects of education, like teaching the kids to look people in the eye when they talk to others, how to develop study habits, etc. It's been shockingly successful, way more than anyone though, so they've been trying to implement the program in other areas.

Here's an NY times article about it: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/08/opinion/08brooks.html

By the way, I know the UK's educational system is very different from ours, but if you have to equivalent of 'magnet schools' (schools specialized in a discipline like visual arts, maths and sciences, foreign languages, etc) you should try to teach at one of those. Generally the parents who try to get their kids into one of those actually give a shit about their children's well-being and thus their kids are less likely to be complete fuck-offs.

Hire competent teachers. Kick out those teachers who suck (don't know anything about their subject) or whose kids, looking at data over a few years time, do shit on tests. Hire more teachers with degrees, like OP.

Look at the Scandinavian countries, east asian countries, etc. for examples.

Glad I'm not living near shitty places.

The high schools in my area are pretty good. We have three top tier US schools (Westwood, Westlake and Lake Travis), all of which are IB oriented. The only "shitty" ones are Connally and Roundrock.

just because students dont do well on tests doesn't mean the teachers bad, especially with older kids, some people just don't wanna do the work and that needs to be accounted for when accessing teachers

I went to a Charter school and I think they're a lot more effective than traditional public schools, any other thoughts on charter schools robots?
    >> Anonymous 02/06/10(Sat)13:38:51 No.7400719
Fuck em. Let the cunts rot.

It sounds like exactly the same sort of school I went to, and I still got out and ended up with a first from a decent upiversity.

Kids learn in spite of their teachers, not because of them. The only thing school ever taught me was how to roll a joint, how to finger a slut and how to fight.

It's better than it was in the seventies, but the place is still a ghetto with a lot of gang violence. If they can shape those kids into productive members of society, they can help anyone.

USAfag here again, In our country the problem is much less the teachers than the students. Many students are lazy, have social problems, have zero work ethic, etc, etc. The real problem is the way our society raises children. They send those monsters to school, and then what the hell are the teachers supposed to do? Sometimes the teachers are literally the victim of violence, and have a hard enough time trying to keep their classes together and safe much less teach anything. Also, public school teachers in our country are not paid well.

Keep in mind I'm talking about urban or low-income private schools. Suburban and high-income public schools tend to be better funded due to tax-dollar distribution and also have kids with less behavioral issues coming into them.

Maybe it's just the way our country handles standardized testing, but we tried a major initiative called the No Child Left Behind Act a few years ago that focused on test scores, and it was widely recognized as being the worst attempt at improving public education ever.

I really thing the US's problem is much more of a widespread societal issue than it is a problem with the schools themselves.

While I'm not a Christian, I honestly believe Christianity was only only thing keeping Westerners civilised and from behaving like the savage brutes they are. Some real smart, really really smart people long ago invented religion to keep the violent upright ape from killing his brother. It wasn't perfect but it mostly worked.

    meh

Kids are being raised thinking they're going to be famous footballers and rockstars, with parents indulging their whims.

The psychological class structure has disappeared over the last decade. The 16 year old girl in an estate is shagging around with the prada handbag that the upper class girls are clutching.

Nobody says no anymore. No, we can't afford that. No, you can't do that. No, I won't accept you being a shit and disrupting everyone else's education.
    >> Anonymous 02/06/10(Sat)14:04:45 No.7400964
    >>7400861
yeah l agree with this. but it's outdated. we need a 'new' religion (or just a social construct) to keep them together, without having to rely on old values. Or just have old values but tweek them up a bit, people tend to listen to more traditional stuff. Hard dilemma.
