actually that depends (and on the rankings), some schools are #60 but are #5 in specific engineering disciplines, which are competitive and hard to get in.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/10(Sun)01:28:56 No.7253639
Depends on the state, and the school /fucking obvious
    >> Anonymous 01/24/10(Sun)01:29:10 No.7253644
Depends on the University and the major. Some state schools suck ass at almost everything but excel in a couple fields.

Example: NMSU sucks for just about everything. Shitty business department, terrible art and liberal arts. Decent Anthropology and Archaeology but nothing to brag about. But they excel at engineering. USNews ranked their engineering school #37. Granted that's not MIT or CalTech level, but I will say that it's not uncommon for NMSU students to be picked for internships ahead of Tier 1 universities.

I am going to tell you what every teacher I have ever had has told me.

It doesn't matter what college you go to. A degree is a degree. Unless you are trying to get into some extremely prestigious law firm or something, there really is almost no difference.

All in all, go wherever the fuck you want, it doesn't matter if the place has a reputation. Chances are you are not going to do anything truly remarkable in your life anyway(I am not trying to be mean, just honest. Nobody ever really does anything truly remarkable)

Hey anon, got a choice to make:

I can go to a prestigious uni, but I'm going to be competing with hundreds of highly, insanely skilled students for a position at its 4 year grad program after studying at its 2 year program. Very risky.

    OR

I can go to a 6 year program at a lesser school that guarantees me staying in that program and with no competition.

Anyone had to make a similar choice?

    >>7253702
Go to the bed university you can. If you don't, you'll only regret it later.

Especially if the other university is lower than the top 100 or so. A degree from such a university is literally worthless.

Hay guize, I have the option to be around a lot of highly skilled peers that will force me to work to achieve success, or I have the option to surround myself with inferiors that will allow me to coast and eventually be the unemployed kid in my parents basement. Anyone else here relate?

That shouldn't apply if you live in a bad state. I live in Arizona and there are three options: 166th U of A, 309 ASU or unranked NAU. Sure, there's always going out-of-state, but I don't feel like being in debt for life because of the ridiculous cost of out-of-state tuition.

It really depends. If you're going to do a grad program liberal arts, business, or art then you want to go to the best school you can.

If you're going for Science or Engineering it's actually not as big of a deal. With those fields, internships and research are far more important than actual grades and classes you've taken. Employers will be looking at your resume to see if you know particulars about a subject. They won't care if you've taken an orbital mechanics course or not.

well it's not the job thing that bothers me (95% of the graduates there get a job, 5% go into a phd program), it's that l feel like I'm missing out on something. In the prestigious one, less than half of its people get in. I know someone there who still hasn't got in after 2 years (and has transferred to a state uni). I'm not as smart as the top guys (i think I'd be in the lower middle) but is this risk worth it? From personal exp?

let me tell you a secret, robots.

When applying to schools, the most important thing to look for isn't if it's on a top 100 list. It's not if it's state or private.

It's if you fit. Do you go there and feel like a ronery virgin? Or do you feel like they're people you can get along with? You're going to be miserable i you're there and don't fit in. You'll probably drop out.

I go to a tiny, not-very-remarkable private school. But I love it. As long as you don't study something worthless and you get a good education, you'll get a job.
    >> Anonymous 01/24/10(Sun)02:02:34 No.7254077
lol, the contrast between the ones that know what they are talking about and the ones that don't is amazing.

Pick ur school based on your major, cost, and if they're going to give you good financial aid. or if you like something else particular about it.(even if it's the football team, if u like it that much, then go for it.)

I'm EE @ Texas Tech. sometimes i wish i was elsewhere due to the mass amounts of idiots (frat boyz and shit) but then I realized: If you get to coast through school without dealing with people you hate, what's gonna happen at work? You must challenge and apply yourself.

And this doesn't mean that MIT and Yale are bad either, it's just that going there doesn't 100% guarantee u a 6-figure job's going to be handed to u on a silver platter as soon as you graduate.
Want a job? get ANY degree related to your field, resume, apply, interview, and you're in. employers see things like this: Skills>School.

This is the kind of flaky bullshit advice that makes people major in marketing at podunk university.

There is no such thing as "fitting" at a university, and even if there was there is no way you could judge it from high school.

Major in a sensible subject at the best university you can get into. That is, unless you want to be an unemployed, basement dwelling loser forever.
