I think there is a natural niche in society for lesbians, they just aren't allowed to find it because of the social pressures put on women, in general. I think Lesbians could fill the same roles as non-reproducing women and post-menopausal women: governance and maintenance of home.

if you look at primitive societies, young children are fed by their mothers. children can't hunt and don't know how to safely gather food, so they rely on their mothers to get food for them. but, when their mothers get pregnant, their attention turns to the newer children, and the older children are left without caretakers. so who takes care of these kids between 3 and 10? Grandmothers and "aunts". these women who are too old, or infertile would take responsibility for these older children until they can begin contributing to the village and earning/foraging their own food.

in this scenario, having another gender that doesn't reproduce at all, but is still capable of hunting and foraging would be pretty handy. you would have someone who could provide for older children, without adding their own young children to the equation.
