All trolling aside, what is it about Anime and Video Games that seems to attract the stereotypical weird, social recluse? I'm not trying to imply that every person that likes them automatically is one, but you have to admit that a large number of people that enjoy these fandoms (usually the more into them, the greater chance) are, by most standards, weird?

Why is there such a difference in character between someone who likes to watch anime, and someone who really likes watching movies? I know there will be people storming this thread talking about how they love this stuff and are still completely normal, but you can't deny it's there. Any socially inept or strange person I've met almost always plays video games all the time, and is most likely into anime.

So I guess it comes down to the question: Are you weird because you like video games and/or anime, or do you like them because you're weird?

    Pic unrelated

    Video games are mainstream now.

Anime however is still in the realm of megalosers
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)22:51:26 No.7219058
It's because a few years ago, anime and video games weren't entirely socially acceptable. The "normal" people thus avoided them, while the weirdos, already social recluses, decided to embrace them since they are, in fact, pretty entertaining.

Nowadays, some videogames are starting to break into the mainstream, so perhaps the video game side of this isn't as relevant, but the anime stuff still stands.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)22:52:14 No.7219069

My friends don't even know I like anime. Not even my ex-girlfriend who was a huge weeaboo.

The types of games I play would probably be frowned upon by a normal person. Not even my friends know about them.

And yet I have a pretty normal social life, I'm probably pretty weird. But I have a normal job, normal friends, I dress normally for the most part, and I keep my hair at an agreeable length, all I have is just a weird secret life that only I know about.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)22:53:51 No.7219085
as far as anime goes its cause normalfags know how to hide their power level while the obnoxious weird people just don't care.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)22:55:26 No.7219098
well, animes are often pretty long series, so you invest a lot more time in them than movies. shows on tv are long, but they're also more popular, so you can watch them with people.

and if you're really into anime, you'll watch them online and watch entire shows in a couple days. video games can also be time consuming and isolating.

but it's easy to do all these things and still socialize
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)22:55:45 No.7219101
because it gives a chance to all these people to go to an alternative universe where they are not socially inepts. that's why you see them staring into the emptiness while they aren't watching anime or videogames, they are thinking in this universe where they are super awesome and everybody wants to be like them.

    >>7219058
Yeah, you're right about video games. Call of Duty as an example, is breaking into mainstream, as well as the Wii I guess. I can't see Anime getting to that point very soon though.

no idea. one of my friends came over today to yell at me to get onto MW2, but I can't find my controller, so he sat down and we watched DBZ for 7 fucking hours (with a break to go into town to get some dogs)

I wouldn't say either of us are stereotypical weird, social recluse.

but then again, compare your average guy who plays MW2 and watches DBZ with your average guy who....shit what do you 4channers play/watch?

I know /v/ has a boner for TF2, not sure what /a/ likes. but you get my drift.

also, I'd like to say that what you play and watch doesn't make who you are socially, nor what you are determines what you like to watch and play. it's your own goddamned choice.

that said, I don't think they are coincidences either, but rather a trend. what the cause for correlation in these trends? hell if I know, ask someone else.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)23:01:27 No.7219154
if anything, anime is pretty popular, girls are attracted to its moeblob shit and bright colors and yaoi, ugly feminine guys. Scifi/fantasy, however, with the exception of WoW (fuck you blizz for selling out) is still the home of recluses.

Also, the main thing is that anime is foreign, so there's this 'ehh... asians..." thing to it. l didn't really see whites getting into it until a white friend of mine recognized a few anime movies on my shelf when I was 10.
    >> [Goku] !i6MHlwIx1E 01/21/10(Thu)23:04:09 No.7219182
also I can't speak for anime because I can't stand anime that isn't Dragonball or Miyazaki, but video games have been mainstream for 10+ years. shit, remember Pokemon Red/Blue? Mario 64? Goldeneye? Tony Hawk Pro Skater?
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)23:06:36 No.7219221
Video games: Sure there's multiplayer, but most games are single player, meaning you're playing by yourself.

Anime: You can watch it with other people, but most of the time you're downloading it and watching it on your tiny-screened computer.

Movies: Movie theaters and DVD (yes, I know anime is on DVD, but c'mon, who buys anime?)

That being said, why it's mainly social recluses that get into anime and video games as opposed to social people and women is because of the fact that they've got nothing else to do. While attractive women and social guys are out partying, hanging with friends, etc., these guys are inside. What are they going to do whilst inside? Play video games, watch anime, etc.

And I wouldn't be surprised if someone quotes this and says, "But I know a hot chick who watches anime," or something, well, of course there are anomalies. I hung out with these "bros" over the summer who watched anime, played video games, AND played Magic: The Gathering. One of the guys had a different chick over each time I was there and each one was pretty fucking hot.
    >> Anonymous 01/21/10(Thu)23:06:40 No.7219225
Because even social recluses need to find a way to spend their spare time. normal people hang out with other normal people. us recluses watch cartoons.

people who reads books are often atracted (not in a sexual way) to other people who shares their tastes in literature, and if you have been in a reading group, then discuss about these topics, improving their talk and social ability.
In contrast the usual discusion on people who play videogames will be "oomg triple kill hax" or "my wizard is lvl25 lololol".
the anime people, well MOST (not all) are just plain retards

You think the social recluses are only playing popular games? Nah, they're playing everything. And even then, just because they play a multiplayer game doesn't mean they aren't social recluses. Back in the day playing a multiplayer game meant you weren't since you must have friends to play with, but nowadays you can just hop online and play.

When one feels out of place in society, they may tend to seek another culture, which feels like a new society, to confide in and join. It's animal nature. Sometimes, primates exclude themsleves for one reason or another, maybe it's physical frailty so they can't get a female, etc. but they end up going to other social circles trying to be accepted.

As for the video games, they offer a fantasy world, an escape, but they are just fun in general.

yknow, I've actually wondered this about MMO's. I never understood what was so addictive about them.

    >>7219771
that any different from Rome Total War?
call me a freak, but I just like the strategic shit. yeah doing combat is actually pretty fun, and fucking epic, but I just like to move through the campaign. shit's time consuming, and I feel like the computer does a pretty good job with good or even odds.

you guys are pretty damn stuck up about video games. I mean, I'm super fucking picky, but I don't call people trolls for not liking certain games, or even genre's.

I think I've only liked about 5 games that have come out in the last 2 years.

never even heard of it D:

related to....Europa Universalilestnseltsel whatever? never played it, but apparently it's legendary?

as far as map strategy games go, I played the shit out of the first HoI. I'd play the new one, but it won't run on my computer for some dumb reason. can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Weird, therefore I like anime (not into the vidya at all, atypical for a 22 year old male living in the USA).

Actually, I started watching anime to figure out what the hell people saw in it and then I got hooked. And I got interested in Japan BEFORE ever knowing anything about anime.

I'm not your stereotypical anime fan though, I would never, ever dress up like an anime character in public or flaunt my interest and I'm not into the stereotypical stuff at all - I'm a foreign film buff, and most of what I like in anime is the artsy/deep stuff like Winter Days, Gosenzosama Banbanzai, Texhnolyze, Haibane Renmei, Aoi Bungaku.

No, it's just a mod that adds detail and realism to the original game.

I think the ting about being a nerd is openness.

I mean, I guess I'm "weird" for liking to spend my time reading comics or playing videogames, or having a night of D&D with my friends, but I don't think it's any more weird than someone who spends all their time and money being a sports fan or some shit. Hell, 90% of the certifiably manly men I know are all Star Trek and Stargate fans (I defy you to find one father who didn't watch Star Trek).

But being a nerd, I'm open to anything. You wanna watch anime? Sure, I'll give it a shot. You wanna go to a convention in costume? Awesome, sounds like fun. You wanna go LARPing and beat eachother up with swords in the woods? Let me get my boots.

Everyone else in the world is so averse to even SEEMING nerdy that they avoid what could otherwise be fun shit, just because their peers might not approve.

Fuck them. I'll spend my life having fun.

    wat?

If it's mainstream nearly everyone has heard of it. I lurk a fair bit and I have no idea what you're talking about. And i'm not the average soap-opera-watching, pop music listener that defines the mainstream.

    It's essentally what he said.

You must know that some of these people may not find regular tv programing entertaining to them. Becoming self-aware to that knowledge, they seek out entertainment that will more suit them. That form of entertainment will lead them to a niche, and that niche will help them fit into the greater mainstream.

Like teenagers, they may not be into sport, underage drinking, or dating. But if they are interested in a niche they will seek out people in the same niche, and...you understand what I'm talking about right?

Video games let us take up our fucked up violent fantasies and hatred for the people around us out on nonexistent objects.

Anime presents a euphoric fantasy world of romance and polished charm. Why do lonely housewives read romance novels? Exactly.
