Democrats, what the fuck is up with your shit.

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU LOSE A SENATE SEAT IN MASSACHUSETTS.

I can't even believe the results I'm seeing. You guys are in some serious shit here, I mean, dropping the ball isn't even close to describing tonight's election. You had a 3:1 voter registration advantage in a state with 60% approval for Obama. The Republican's entire platform was KILLING THE CURRENT HEALTH PLAN.

    Jesus Christ.
    >> Anonymous 01/19/10(Tue)21:14:06 No.7183372
because there's a lot of pissed off conservatives in Massachusetts. something like only 2 out of 3 people wear seatbelts there. voter turnout among the right is going to be HUGE this year.

meanwhile the left is thinking "oh hey we live in Massachusetts why even bother going to the polls"

There's an old saying, you liberals should get used to hearing it, because it's a truism that will be a truism for eternity:

Democrats excel at yanking defeat from the jaws of victory

    Example: Barack Obama

Yes, the Democrats have a 3:1 margin, but independents are still the largest portion of the voting base. They were leaning 60:40 from the last poll I saw (yesterday). There is genuine disgust on how the healthcare reform is going. I would be pissed about all of the no media meetings concerning this.

But yeah, Democrats were lazy about this one. I am still surprised that this was even considered close.

When things come down to it republicans can get what they want done even if it is worse off for just about everyone whereas dems are just like deer in headlights. Look at all the shit bush was able to do while most the meaningful time republicans only had a majority. Now the Dems own the presidency, house, and a fucking super majority in the senate and they cant get anything fucking done because they are pussies. Dems wasted a lot of their time trying to get bi partisan support by peeling off a couple repugs but are too blind to realize that they could shit gold and the american dream and the republicans would still fight tooth and nail against it. They bent over so much that what came out was a piece of shit nobody wanted, they managed to piss off the right and the left. At least when republicans want something they go for broke and fuck everyone else. Guess what, they tend to get it

Obama's problem man, is he simply was not ready for prime time.

He probably could have been a good President with a term and a half under his belt as Senator instead of 3 or 4 years under his belt.

He just didn't learn to temper his ideology with any common sense, and he didn't learn how to lead the Congress and Senate towards fruitful compromise

He really just....over stepped, big time, by choosing to run in 08, despite him winning the election

I will tell you how they lost.

You see that woman in the picture the OP posted. She felt entitled to the seat on the basis that she was a Democrat going for Ted Kennedy's seat. I hope this teaches the Democrats a lesson all over the United States. Nothing is entitled to the Democratic party, if you want the seat, you have to fight for it. You have to claw your way all the way through, not sit back and easy ride.
The democrats are going to come out strong in the 2010 November elections because of this. Tonight's disaster is the equivalent to a great nation losing a war out of lack of care. The democrats being the great nation of course. They will realize that they have to fight, and they will stop taking bullshit from the republicans completely. Stop attempting to compromise. Stop being friendly. Push all the shit you can through however you can and ignore those whose job it is to say "no".

Video footage taken at a private dinner with the AFL-CIO has Obama saying he eventually wants single-payer universal healthcare. The public option was a means to an end.

    yeah.

the fucked up thing is that even most moderate conservatives would have liked a german-style system (private non-profit insurance companies founded and regulated by the government).

Mandates + means-tested subsidies though? Man, talk about the least popular and effective thing they could have done. Maximizes corporate handouts, minimizes cost efficiency, makes things actively worse for everyone not receiving the subsidizes because mandates allow all kinds of abuse since you can't simply not buy insurance if it gets too abusive.

The reason passing any healthcare reform is so important is because its permanent. Note that I count China as not shifting from universal healthcare because they still subsidize it for everyone. Universal healthcare is forever.

If America adopts universal healthcare, no matter how flawed, it is eternal. It may be shrunk but it will not go away. Opinion polls in areas that adopt it show that after about a year most people support it, even in places where it clearly does not work like Brazil.

    Brown was elected on personality.

Massachusetts is one of the most liberal states in the union, the man was elected more because people are pissed off and less on actual policy.

This happens all the time, president is not Jesus, people vote for a different party, same shit as last time happens. American politics never changes, it is one reactionary vote after another.

I am not going to say the democrats are worth voting for, they aren't. But at least they have a plan worth listening to, the republicans are just bitching about communism and spreading fear in the vague hopes it will work. And like always, it does.

The "market regulating itself" is simply an allusion to Adam Smith's invisible hand. I.e. businesses want to be successful, and have to do things the populace wants if it wants to survive and prosper. If it doesnt, no matter how big or strong it thinks it is, that business will die quicker than a democrat's hopes for a proper universal healthcare bill.

Of course businesses dont actually regulate themselves in the sense of keeping themselves "kosher" because of principle. They keep themselves kosher because they dont want to die out.

There is no use arguing about politics anymore. Hasn't been a point in it for a long time now. This country was bought and sold a long time ago. Republicans, I admit, are the best at getting what they want out of the political system. I mean look a Bush. He was able to secure himself millions if not billions in oil simply by staging a fake terrorist attack then invading a country. The corporations with the money have much more control than a congress. A few cleverly placed bribes and you can either get a bill passed or stop a bill from getting passed.

The only thing that scares the interests that run this country are intelligent people. People like JFK. Intelligent people who can see through the lies and deception. Not a few people...a country of people who are so smart they can see the bullshit. However, this country will NEVER be collectively intelligent enough to take over.

Our taxes are really high because our inner cities are pretty much the worst shitholes in America (I'd feel safer walking down the streets of Compton with 300 bucks in my waller than Camden), and the kids there unexpectedly do terrible at school. Losing a senate seat in Massachussets is completely understandable.

Massachussets has had a form of universal health care that was implemented by Democrats. Due to bad planning and some dumb luck the universal health care system in massachussets did nothing but drive up premiums... nothing changed. Now most of the voting public is heavily against universal health care for the US. The republican candidate ran off of a platform where his main issue was to vote no for universal health care in the senate. Everyone, including the Democrats in Massachussets would like to see the health care bill shot down... and that was their only avenue to implement that kind of change.

They may be an overwhelmingly blue state, but party registration had little to do with this vote. The whole vote was the state of Massachussets attempting to stop what they saw as a drain on their pocketbooks

I listened to MLK speeches on Democracy Now yesterday and it made me realize that the military-industrial complex is not a figure of speech but the real engine of American society. However, it is the consent of the people of America that has allowed this to happen.

On the bright side, nothing in this world is solid and eternal, everything changes in time. No matter how pathetic and backwards governments act, time and change will wipe them from the earth in time. Germany did not exist 200 years ago, the US may not exist in 200 years.

The absolute best part of all this is that it's the Democrats' fault.

Basically, every major policy agenda the Democrats had that's left of center is dead.

With 41 votes in the Senate, Republicans can deny quorum and extend debate forever on any bill and kill any amendment to a bill. This won't be the case on bills that a compromise can be reached on, but dividing legislation like the current health care reform bill will never pass now. It's politically toxic now to any Democrat who represents a conservative constituency to vote with the leadership now on the big issues, which includes the same health plan.

This election has basically changed the scope of our political landscape.

    1) It would have increased our already unbearable overspending which has put the US into unrecoverable debt.
    2) It did nothing to address tort reform, because the trial lawyers own the Democratic party and the people know it.
    3) It did nothing to address the fact that Americans will continue to pay higher costs for good drugs than other countries because they have lower prices by law. Thus Americans pick up 90% of the R&D, and the companies forced to shrug and sell their drugs for $10 in France where they cost $120 here (i.e., we pay for the French too- but the costs have already come out, and the companies might as well sell there too).
    4) The special interests in the bill were a sham. Nebraska no longer pays for medicare in order to buy their senator. Louisiana got $100 million in random money to buy their senator. The have a tax on "cadillac" health care plan (wtf is that supposed to mean? That your insurance covers *even more* drugs? Isn't that what the Dems want automatically covered in health care? As if people would still buy insurance after the gov already covers everything!), but they exempted the unions in a bald faced political maneuver. There were numerous other examples.
    5) People see through the bullshit of "unity" being a moniker for left-wing change. The libs complain the conservatives won't budge: of course they won't, unity is a *two-way* street, and the libs are saying "take it exactly this like or else you're not being bipartisan".
    >> Anonymous 01/19/10(Tue)22:41:57 No.7185148
The reason the Democrats aren't able to accomplish anything is because of their stupid fifty state strategy. Democrats love to brag how it gets Democrats elected in Republican states, but what's the fucking point if they refuse to vote with their party on such a huge issue like health-care?

Democrats either need to ditch the fifty-state strategy or take lessons from the Republicans and institute some actual party discipline.

My question is: Will the Democrats finally use the Nuclear Option?

For years during the Bush Presidency, the Republicans used the fear of the nuke to keep the legislative system moving. There would be extremely long term effects to doing this, but is health care worth it? Would 50 Senators and howevermany Reps vote for it? Can't say for sure.

Basically, the nuclear option is Congress saying that the filibuster is un-Constitutional. This only takes a simple majority to resolve, not the super-majority. The fallout from doing this would be ENORMOUS though. Hence, the name.

I'm technically a "rich person" too, but if you look at how "rich people" in Sweden pay, they get huge benefits same as anyone. There are certain things like health care that those governments decide are important, and so everyone pays a little and it gets done. In the US, its military, subsidies for big pharma, big agribusiness, and more. In sweden, its education, health care etc...

Fuck it. Rich people in the US (who are upper middle class, not the kind who have 7 figures yearly income or assets), still pay a fuckton of taxes but they get NO benefit. Wouldn't you rather benefit, and make the TRULY RICH pay their fair share instead of dodging it and paying NOTHING?

Oh go to hell. You need only look to other countries, specifically Japans new Democratic party (ie. More liberal than the liberal dems!) and Scandinavia to see effective governments that have excellent plans that would be called socialism in this country.

The only reason our government is ineffective and inefficient is because the fucking handlers who own this plutocracy PAY to make it that way. For instance, the whole poisonous health insurance industry would be out of a job if we went to single payer, the very same way we pay the military, and the way the military pays for THEIR healthcare (ie. Soldier with Tricare goes to doctor > Doctor Bills Tricare > Doctor Gets Paid from Tricare) . That is it. Our government has been engineered to be ineffective, largely by Republicans who are on a shorter corporate leash than democrats. Granted, both are bad but repugs are wose.
