They were trying to keep the state going for the benefit of the few, regardless of what the many had to suffer. If for example the Party were invading peoples' privacy to ensure that no injustices could be committed outside of their view, then maybe I could sympathise with them. But they weren't, they were only doing it to maintain their own power and keep everyone else down.

Capitalist states don't allow that degree of social control. If you actually read the book O'Brien talks for ages about how power is not a means to an end, it is THE end. 1984 is about Stalinist Russia. Most examples of how horrible Big Brother behaves is simply what they did or wanted to do. You can read Animal Farm if you want the politics and history of the state Orwell had in mind, it should clear up motives and intentions.

People let it happen because they didn't really have any fucking idea what was happening in Germany. They just kinda thought that this jew hating thing was just about kicking them out of the country or something.
