Just wondering how many people here have absolutely zero interest in anime and Japan in general. I understand that 4chan was founded on the principle of being a fucking weeaboo, but I've posted here for a few years and have never so much as watched an anime all the way through. In fact, I look down on people who do enjoy it. Someone tried to make me watch Akira once and I thought it was the most tedious, poorly-paced shit.

    How about you?
    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)21:43:06 No.6507647
You look down on someone who enjoys something you've admittedly never even properly looked into?

    I see.

    I think you're a raging cancer on 4chan.

4chan was founded on otaku culture. All people who have zero interest in it should leave.

I used to be really into it, but not so much now. However, some of my favorite movies/TV series are still anime. Generally, if I hear someone is into anime, I try and steer clear, because alot of them just want to talk about NARUTOS all the time.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)21:45:16 No.6507682
I used to hate it, but I've come to realize that it's a drawing style, and not a genre, so it's dumb to assume it's all shitty like dragon ball Z.

    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)21:47:50 No.6507717
I used to be way more into it, but the majority of anime/manga fans piss me off. Most of it seems very cookie-cutter now, anyway, which is a pity because there are a few good shows out there that are worth the time to sit down and watch it.

Naruto is not one of them.

Enjoyment of anime hinges on whether you find anime girls attractive or not.

If you don't find anime girls attractive, it would be a lot harder to watch anime.

For me, just watching a scene of dialogue is orgasmic because of the hotness of the girls.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)21:48:50 No.6507735
I don't have any interest in anime whatsoever. Japan seems like a pretty cool guy, but I don't obsess over the entertainment business of a country that I'm never going to visit.

All in all I've visited this site over the years for the lulz and because it grew to have more boards to cater for different tastes.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)21:49:10 No.6507739
I tried to watch some of it. It's so fucking mind numbing. Japanese people try so hard to be deep and it just fails. All the emotion is so poorly done. The animation itself can be interesting sometimes, but usually it's just boring.

The best thing about anime is when the white man spoofs it with better dialogue.

I'm into the otaku culture for a long time. I actually came to 4chan just for the pictures on /c/. But then I visited the other boards such as /v/, /cgl/, and /a/.

Even though /b/ makes most of the news of 4chan, the entire website is based on 2chan and a sizeable proportion of the 4chan website consist of image boards of Japanese culture or of otaku culture in America.

It's a form of medium and like any medium it's pretty much impossible to say you hate all of it or all of it is horrible. Although I disagree with many Japanese values such as their forced collectivism, their xenophobia/racism, their denial of their involvement in WWII and their sexist views about gender roles in society, I still enjoy some of the animation they produced. For example Death Note or Fullmetal Alchemist.

I enjoyed Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z as a kid, and there was recently a action-comedy anime I caught an ep of that I enjoyed, but I can't remember the name. Maybe Desert Punk or Desert Boy or something?

I split my time between /r9k/ and /a/ if that answers your question. There are plenty of decent anime out there, but you'll never heard about them in a place like /a/.

Anime I'd recommend for adult, non-anime fans:
Golgo 13 - Japan's answer to James Bond
Bartender - No need for an explanation
Baccano - 30s mafia gang wars on a train
Black Lagoon - Modern-day pirates in Indonesia

My friend had me watch DBZ and Pokemon a few years ago. I thought it was the most childish bullshit I had ever seen. A couple years later, I tried Inuyasha and thought it was fucking horrible. Then I see tons of clips of anime that looks like Lucky Star and I've seen enough of it to know that it is not meant for adult men that aren't pedophiles.

I see it as any other genre of art; there is a top echelon that can impress people or draw them in to the genre. If you can enjoy anything worse than that, then you may have interest in it. So there may be a series or two of anime that is watchable, but as a whole, anime is fucking stupid and I have no respect for people who watch it.

I'd say I enjoy and consume western and japanese entertainment equally much. Visual novels are my favorite since they're a lot like books but with choices, consequences and sometimes voiced dialogue (which I don't understand but it helps to convey the emotions and state of mind of the characters).

Hate anime and anime fans? then you yourself are a pathetic waste of life who is a bigger loser then the people you hate so much. Eveny single person thats thinks they are on a higher level then someone for not liking anime is usally a failure at life just pretrending to hate something to make their life seem less shitty; and some anime 'haters' deep down actually like anime and are just to insecure to admit it.

I'm sure many know that anime is not perceived to be cool and are just aping that reaction.

Some I know genuinely dislike it for whatever reasons.

Me? I like it. And I'm a normal-fag. I don't talk about anime in public unless someone mentions it and then I'll casually comment. And then it's always interesting because you wouldn't guess they like anime.

Anyways, while most anime watchers are greasy, unkempt, neckbeards and generally hideous weeaboo women, there are normal-fags that enjoy anime.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/09(Wed)22:20:12 No.6508196
Weeaboos who say they "like anime" are the same as fags who say "they don't like anime." Both rely on some bizarre-ass notion that anime has some sort of common defining trait other than being animated and coming from Japan. While there are common recurring kinds of anime (fighting shounen, harem) there's all sorts of other shit that can't be characterized under a blanket generalization at all. Even more so with manga which is significantly more prolific in production.

It's like saying "I don't like movies" because for you movies = chick flicks and shitty action flicks.

I came from sa to troll long ago. But I actually stuck around for some of the boards. I dont come here as often anymore now that /n/ has been raped. But I do poke around. I actually enjoy setting up shop in games with bros more then I do with the goons, surprisingly many bros I meet that actually stick with the games we try (especially mmo's) are more fun and actually behave in a manner more consistant with how I like to behave in online games. (Mature to the outside world, guild oriented rather then being selfish)
Dont get me wrong, goons can be fun too, but they engage in circlejerk behavior constantly whereas the bros really do just want to play a game usually.
PLus sometimes /b/ comes along for the ride which always adds an interesting dynamic.

And I still enjoy lulzkilling doubleagent bullshit on /b/ raids. God the paranoia is fun to exploit.

I dont actually think much of Japan except for the hilarious aspects of its society, and I am too old to have even ever uttered the word "Anime" in real life. They are all "cartoons" to me, and I find jap cartoons to be joyless uninspired exercises in cultural masturbation.

I walk the line between weeaboo and normal. I get into an anime once every couple years or so, but I don't obsess over them like some people I've encountered. I read manga once every several years, though I have yet to finish reading one. I have a thing for Japanese cityscapes and scenery, but then again, I have a thing for non-Japanese cityscapes and scenery as well.

Above all else, however, I've been an avid listener of Japanese music since 13 (now 19). Thing is, my tastes in Japanese music go beyond the music of Anime and Video Game soundtracks, and I've explored various other genres of Japanese popular music. Then again, I also listen to significant amounts Arabic pop, assorted Spanish and Latin-American Music, and American music of course, among other music.

Oh, by the way OP, check out Cromartie High School. The entire series uploaded to YouTube, at least as of a year ago, and it's pretty damn good.

    http://www.youtube.com/manlytree

With all that said, I didn't come to 4chan to discuss anime or Japanese culture, and I don't discuss anime or Japanese culture on 4chan. Nor do I really discuss anime or Japanese culture anywhere for that matter.

Nowadays I'm exploring the popular music of the 1970s and 1980s (particularly EPO, Taeko Onuki, Akiko Yano, Sugar Babe, Yumi Matsutoya, Matsuda Seiko, related acts, etc.)

If you're into Jazz or Hip Hop, though, I'd recommend the music of Hydeout Productions and its associated acts, since it forms the bulk of my collection and thus the majority of the "Japanese" music I listen to. It involves a lot of Japanese-American collaboration though, so it technically may not be considered "Completely" Japanese.

I also at times listen to Utada Hikaru, and Shiina Ringo (and Tokyo Jihen), and Fantastic Plastic Machine.

I watched a few anime? Anime's? when I was a kid, like DBZ, Pokemon, etc.

It was just like any other cartoon I watched, I enjoyed it as a child. Now I find watching anything un-realistic (to be more clear, unrealistic as in how the characters are portrayed/act, or how someone would actually react to certain events. I understand people are different, but damn most have a set course of reaction to something when it happens) more of a burden, and displeasing to my tastes, I still dabble in it on occasion.

Bakemonogatari (every other SHAFT show is equally drug influenced but this one is the most)
    Gankutsuou

    Cat Soup

Anime about a shut-in like yourself (also has some psychedelic elements, very depressing though so don't watch if you're depressed already):

    1. Man this film is WEIRD I'm just gonna pay attention to all the weirdness because its TOO WEIRD.
    2. I am going to watch this film for its plot and characters and how they are presented. The weirdness is a secondary element and shouldn't be focused on.

Obviously, you are type #1: If there is weirdness in something, that is all you see and you cannot appreciate the true beauty of the film.

I discovered the virtually all of the (Japanese) '70s and '80s artists I listen as a result of digging around YouTube for a lengthy period of time.

It's a disappointment that the music is otherwise extremely obscure and difficult to come across. I don't collect the albums, though I'd really like to attain a few at some point in the future, since I can't seem to find anywhere to download them.

That's a good blog. Might I recommend a few bands of my own? I'm not on my normal comp, but a few bands like Anzen Chittai, Blues Creation, Flower Traveling Band, and folks like Nakagawa Katsuhiko are good listens.

There are two ways people justify their love for Paprika

    1. MAN this thing is WEIRD and from JAPAN so it's totally AWESOME.
    2. Herp depr guys it's a pretty deep film and if you don't like it you can't appreciate the innovations in animation and surreal accomplishments.

I thought I was going to watch an actual good movie and not some poorly interwoven wankfest with forgetable characters and a terrible antagonist (lol he's possibly homosexual!).

    Perfect Blue was much better.

Cool, I find a lot of stuff on YouTube too. I knew about YMO for a while, but I didn't realize their videos were so fucking awesome though. I'm lucky to work at a station where I find lots of things on world music comps and such too.

What got you interested in that style of music? Just curious, I hardly ever run into people who enjoy 80s pop in more than an ironic way, outside of certain clubs/bars at least.

    >>6509085
Satori is the best 70s rock record period. No filler, no unnecessary wank, out-Sabbath's Sabbath, out-Crimson's King Crimson, out-boogies all those shit British blooze groups. And it all feels raw, natural, and unforced. Just fucking great. I was never super-impressed by Blues Creation, but they were definitely good at what they did.

Also have you ever heard Pink Lady? They were more disco-influenced but have a few good cuts. Their records are relatively easy to find too.

You can probably find some of those bands' records on GEMM, if you did ever want to own one specifically. Lots of Europeans sell 70s/80s pop and boogie on there.

I first discovered J-Pop back in '03 though Koyanagi Yuki's "Cross Colours," and sought to find more music like it.

Though I eventually accumulated a modest-sized collection of songs, I collected tons of MIDI files back in High School, and I had an especially large Japanese Music MIDI collection that exposed me to a lot of different styles from different periods. Amidst the music of more contemporary artists I was already familiar with, some MIDIs had a certain style to them that really seemed to click with me; I'd later (aka recently) discover that a lot of J-Pop songs from the '70s and '80s had a similar style. So, I began to explore that era of J-Pop in greater depth. Discovered EPO a few months back, became totally obsessed with her music.

I haven't heard much Pink Lady, though they're alright from what I have heard.

But it's cold outside your bed.

You don't want to get up, but the urge to urinate is just too strong!

You make up your mind to go!

You run to the bathroom, stand in front of the toilet, and let loose!

I don't really enjoy anime, because of the following reasons: it's slow, it's full of fillers, the animations aren't as smooth or as lip-synced as, say, Disney films, and most importantly, a huge number of anime are generic trash which you've to wade through to find the gems.

So, no I don't watch anime.

However, I do have interest in Japan and Japanese culture; doing a study on it, actually. I'm also fortunate enough to be literate in Japanese, and I can read quite fluently, so I'll vouch for manga instead, which often are way, way better and varied than anime any time. (Deeper stuff too; e.g. the Silent Service series.)
