Alright. I need to complete a language route in order to complete my Gen Ed requirements for college. My choices are:

    Spanish
    French
    German
    Russian
    Greek
    Latin
    Italian
    Chinese
    Portugese
    Japanese (lol, weeaboo)
    Arabic

I'm leaning towards doing German merely because I already know a good portion of it (I took German classes for all of middle school and half of high school), but maybe doing another language would be better. I've also heard Latin was good, seeing as it's the root form of a lot of other languages. Or, I could go the complete weeaboo route and do Japanese.

So, which language route do you guys prefer? Any specific experiences with one language or another. Share your stories, if you don't mind.

I'm studying japanese right now. Shit's fun and its difficulty is overrated, You are going to have to study so you can't be a lazy nigger.

Only do it if you are going to actually be using it to read or watch weeaboo shit otherwise its just a waste ya know?

Language is cool if you're into history and stuff. Otherwise German is the best language, though Arabic is pretty awesome as well. So is Russian.

Problem with Russian, but mostly Arabic and Chinese: You can study those languages for YEARS and you will still never be proficient in them.

    German is easy.

QQ moar fag, some people are actually good at picking up second languages.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:12:46 No.6142311
I'd suggest chinese or russian simply because of the fact that they are rapidly growing commercial mights. Ability to deal in China and Russian can be very highly respected and required in future.

If you're in the U.S, learn Spanish. No one gives a flying fuck whether you speak French, German or Japanese. Seriously, how many German speaking people have you seen in the U.S? French? Japanese? How about Spanish? Spanish is the most useful and most common romance languages spoken in the world.

These are especially good choices in countries near Russia and China.

    >Chinese and Arabic

LOL. Only if you are a lazy imbecile who thinks that simply going to class and doing your homework is how to learn a language.

Let's calculate how many job postings we've seen stating "Spanish preferred". Now lets calculate how many job postings we've seen asking for "Russian, French or German?" That's right niggers.

"Well I put French on my resume because it sounds good" hah - couldn't be more wrong. You don't know how many doctors I've met saying they should have taken Spanish instead of french because, obviously, NO ONE FUCKING SPEAKS FRENCH.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:17:18 No.6142369

But I already know french and spanish...What then?

Learn Hangul so you can sing GEE GEE GEE GEE BABY BABY BABY as it should be sung.

I know a lot of people with degrees in both languages and none of them come close to being fluent.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:21:46 No.6142424
    french or spanish you mormon

ROMANCE LANGUAGES YOU MUST LEARN THEM FIRST italian and latin dont count. honestly who speaks either of those languages ...

Dude, you probably fucking don't. I took ASL for 4 years and can carry on a conversation for a considerable amount of time. Yet, I don't claim to "know" it. You fucking don't, stick with Spanish until you're a fucking pro. A test? Go to the center of LA at a Mexican farmers market and try finding your way our just by asking for directions in Spanish.

If you're doing this mainly to meet that requirement, learn German, because not only do you already know some, it's also related to English I hear. Languages aren't casual study, and you won't learn a language from textbooks, without sounding like a complete retard when you actually speak it.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:23:18 No.6142442
    >>6142409
So do I. There are also Spanish and French lit majors with SHIT Spanish and French. You don't automatically learn a language just because you happened to take classes for 4 years. It takes a lot of practice and work outside of class, and probably a trip abroad. But it is hardly impossible if you are willing to actually work at it passionate like any other skill you want to develop.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:27:35 No.6142490
    >>6142283

Of course people are. But I doubt you're beyond a year or two of it if you think it's so easy.

    What textbook do you use?
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:32:14 No.6142547
    >>6142490

Genki. I'm not saying its easy by any means, especially compared to some of the softer languages out there, but I find that it's nowhere near as hard as making it out to be. Most people told me that Japanese was only going to lower my GPA.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)01:32:34 No.6142553
I'd learn japanese, why? To watch anime and because I already know English which is the most important language in the world.
Spanish? I can learn that in less than 6 months.

yeah maybe if you were 3 years old.

Since portuguese is my 1st language and I already understand 60% of what it's said in spanish yeah, I'd say I could learn spanish in less than 6 months.

Spanish only takes about 600 class hours to have a basic working knowledge.

    http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Language_Learning_Difficulty_for_English_Speakers

But I doubt that poster will complete 600 hours of class within 6 months.
