I'm sort of freaking out, please advise:

I enrolled in my local community college. I applied and received full financial aid from the federal government in the form of a $2500 Grant, not any loans. Grants. Fall classes were only $1300, I set up the payment, everything was cool, I went to classes for about a month and dropped out.
Long story but basically I lost 2 family members (cancer) and my girlfriend (car accident) and went into numb depression mode, stopped going to school. I dropped out in time to avoid negative grades, I got "incomplete" or whatever instead.

So why the fuck is the community college sending me collection letters, claiming I owe them $1300 for tuition? It was paid in August. What the fuck.

you gotta pay back grants if you don't attend class

same shit happened to me without the family death and now i'm in debt $5000

Well what the fuck are they going to do? Shouldn't the government just take their grant back from the school or whatever, because I dropped out before the academic cutoff point?

I have maybe $300 to my name, they can't take money that I don't have. I make like $250 a week, I can barely afford this apartment with my room mate, I have absolutely no money, a shit car, nothing. I mean...I have no idea what to do. I'm really bad at situations like this.

seriously same story. $500 in the bank and only $240 a week.

i don't know why it's like this, and was surprised when i first got collection letters. i mean i'm fucked enough already being a college dropout, why make me start $5k in the hole?

i ignored the letters simply because i couldn't pay it any way and after a year i got a small claims court summons. i ignored that too and now, idk? i'm trying to save up to pay it off so i can finally start my life, 4 years too late.

fuck i wish i hadn't fucked up already, shit sucks

    >please be optimistic and give me hope

sorry. i've got a shitty factory job and still live at home at 22. i keep myself sane telling myself that once i pay off the debt i'll go back to school and not end up a complete fucktard. though every day that passes i just become more and more complacent as everyone around me assumes this is it, even though i used to be a pretty smart guy.

i just really don't want to end up with a $25,000 a year job in some shitty apartment, alone, smoking weed all day until i end up killing myself. there's a good chance this might happen.

I've never heard that term. Wanna elaborate?

Does this happen a lot? I always thought "grant" meant "here's some money". I got the grant because I make so little each year and live on my own. I figured since I dropped out they sure as hell won't give me any more grants in the future...but why the fuck do they expect me to pay it back?

the school need to get paid because even if you didn't attend, you took up a spot of somebody who would have.

the gov wants the money back from you because they give you the grant with the hope that you grow up to be a model, tax paying citizen. without college you'll pay less taxes and make america look bad compared to other countries.

it fucking sucks, but that's the way it is
