    'sup /r9k/?

I recently went and started a website. It's basically a Newsblog with a *chan site running beneath it to act as a community side of the website. I want it to function like a newspaper would, with many contributing authors each doing various sections, but with the added benefit of having the *chan to function for those who want to vent, to also have their views published. and discuss other things beyond the scope of the main site, and to discuss things on the bleeding edge before it has a chance to get published.

As it's just launched, (read: no content), I have begun talking to people I know who want to get involved in the project. The concept is basically that the newspaper is a dying industry and most newsblogs do too much telling and their concepts of "involvement" peaks at polls.

What do you think? Good idea, bad idea, go for it, or kill myself for being a faggot? At this point I'm just open to ideas before I go and talk to everyone else about getting involved.

I guess an anonymous imageboard might work, but only if it was moderated to ensure civility and a troll-free environment. also, some sort of id system (like 420chan's) to ensure anonymity, but prevent samefagging.

if you want an example of how not to run things, look no further than r9k.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:16:04 No.5811800
The marketplace you're targeting is already extremely saturated (inb4 Web 2.0 bubble). Huge amounts of competition from similar sites. Also, imageboard content generation is never attractive to advertisers. Just look at 4chan, moot is still in debt and he has to resort to porn ads.

I doubt it'll work, honestly. But it's an alright idea for a startup, could be worse.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:18:40 No.5811831
The most important question is, how are you going to generate revenue?

Just saying "LOLADS" doesn't cut it, what demographic are you aiming for? What are alternative revenue streams? How does your product differ from your competitors? Can you attract advertisers by targeting a specific demographic?
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:22:52 No.5811878
who sees old /n/ and thinks "wow what a great thing to expand upon"?
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:25:54 No.5811916
    >>5811878
Old /n/ was shit. It was either racism or misogyny Sort of like what /r9k/ is right now!

Please, OP, give up your dreams. Advertisers won't touch that imageboard with a ten feet pole. Enjoy starving.
    >> Caiden !!VRw3I9qS+nj 10/12/09(Mon)18:27:41 No.5811931
Mainly that the *chan software has not achieved exposure to anyone other than internet basement dwellers. Hell, I know a lot of people who are afraid to go to 4chan at all because they're worried that it's illegal or some shit.

I'm thinking of bringing the software to a much larger exposure. 4chan is the king of all *chans, since every single person who uses the other variations of the software, (7chan, 99chan, konatachan, etc.), also use 4chan or did at some point. That's still a very small part of the internet.

Once the newspaper market collapses completely, I'd like to already have a strong foot in the door.

OH MAH FOOKING GAWD AN R9K TOPIC I CAN POST IN.

Me and some buddies started a site three years ago that never really took off. But we kept posting content and shit, getting the odd link from Digg, ABC etc. Anyway, we approachin' a thousand posts and on the thousandth post we decided we gonna go our separate ways. Today we spat our a post detailing how what to do when starting these sorts of sites (http://tinyurl.com/yhwbw38).

I absolutely motherfuckin' agree with that guy who asked about revenue. You gotta know how to sell ads or get someone who can. Furthermore, you say there's a lot of people asking to contribute content? Motherfuckin' wonderful! BUT make sure that a) its quality writing and b) they don't flake like dandruff. This sort of site is WELL over-done in Web 2.0, but if you pump out quality it should get popular, especially with the novel forum section - would it be an imageboard?

Once /n/ collapsed, I decided to do this project, actually.

    That's what it's all about.

You are the true cancer. Don't try to bring something like the *Chans to the mainstream, you WILL fail, YOU are the kind of people who profit from censorship of the Internet, taking down sites like Pirate Bay and Demonoid, putting licenses and taxes on YouTube. Please fuck off and die.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:32:44 No.5812005
so you want to make a digg/reddit except with opinion writers and anonymous instead of registered users

You do realize that there is a newschan already?
    http://plus4chan.org/boards/n/
420chan, 99chan, and other chan sites have them too.

420chong's permab&s you from the entire site if you say anything bad about Obama on either of their news boards.

Right, but it's still primarily a chan. That's what I'm trying to avoid, use the software, but that's where it stops. It's software, not a piece of ANONYMOUSLEGIONLOL faggotry.

Newsblog first, community site second. Treated the same way as a forum used to be treated on sites of old.

    >>5811931
Anyhow, OP, there's a reason why imageboards haven't taken off. Generally, while there are more posts, the majority of them tend to be shit and attract few readers. Very few companies would want to advertise unless you aim for a specific demographic. I doubt you'll make a profit, much less make up for various costs.

Also, from what I've seen so far, I can bet you the Web 2.0 bubble will burst in the next five or so years. Enjoy your debt.

moot makes a fucking pile of money off this web site, more than $4,000 a day after expenses. if you believe the rumor he started in the washington post then i guess you believe his name is chris poole too. why dont you face up to the fact the his guile is over nine thousand

From what you've said so far, it sounds like your planning to make a site like Associated Content, but with an imageboard attached to it. How exactly are you going to compete with AC? They have ex-Google marketing and engineering employees. What do you have?

Not sure if it'll work, bro. Go ahead and waste the money if you really want.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:45:53 No.5812159
    >>5812068

Except that your not trying to avoid the chans.

You want to tap into the chans user base. Sadly the only way to do that is to accept the 'we are the final boss of teh internet' faggotry that is inherent in the anonymous hivemind. Otherwise what you have is just another news blog of which there are plenty.

This is what the design is like. Whether ads work or not, I really don't care. I have a decent job so I could afford to run the site out of pocket for awhile.

    >moot makes a fucking pile of money
Then why does he look like shit? And why does 4chan still have adult friend finder ads?

If moot was really making a shit ton of cash, he'd have done what Tom Fulp did on Newgrounds and gotten rid of all the shitty porn ads. At best, he's barely covering expenses. I really doubt broke college kids that pirate all their shit and use adblocker ever actually click on the ads.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:51:25 No.5812214

Yeah, but what about the colored boxes, people click on them all the fucking time.

Colored boxes? You mean the banner ads? Again, 4channers pirate everything. We have a boards devoted to pirating. Why would we pay money to subscribe for something we can get for free?
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)18:56:49 No.5812257

so he is covering expenses now?
i thought you just said he was losing money?
why aren't you willing to face up to the reality that you have no idea whatsoever about the financials behind 4chan other than who your feeble mind is able to infer from all the information you've taken in doing exactly no research on the topic.

what i'm wondering is how do the porn advertisers pay moot?
does anyone ever pay for net.porn?
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)19:07:41 No.5812362
    >>5812319

A site like this is probably the worst place for it, since we do nothing but post porn for free anyway. At least those shitty japanese toys had some semblance of a fighting chance to get people to pay for.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)19:10:21 No.5812381
    >>5812319
Usually, the porn advertisers pay every time someone clicks an ad and subscribes via the referral link (just like affiliate marketing, which I know some of you basement dwellers take part in). The money from clicks though is a lot lower than the money from referring new subscribers.

I'm not sure if this is exactly true for 4chan per se, but that's how it's probably done.
    >> Anonymous 10/12/09(Mon)19:16:42 No.5812451
    >>5812362
they could probably sell a lot of pocky back when this was a website fringe website for otaku, but 4chan is now website for uneducated facebook enthusiasts, so the type of ads have to change with times. i guess the type of person who is too stupid to get everything for free (less skilled than the webmaster of a porn site) is probably your average 4chan user these days.
