Democrats go for the rights and what is called progressivism: more solidarity (do not confuse with socialism) and humanity and getting away of the cavemen mentality.
Republicans go for the respect of the institutions and the structures. They remind us that even if we don't live in caves anymore it's still a tough world and we need to stick to some structures to survive, whether we like them or not. They believe that progressivism "spoils" people.

I think the key is to success is to have a balance between the democrat and the republican mentality.

Democrats are more likely to give up security for freedom.
Republicans are more likely to give up freedom for security.
This of course is a generalization and not 100% accurate, you can find exceptions for both statements.

Democrats balance themselves out by wanting to take away some rights. The right to keep the money you earn, the right to buy guns, the right to eat what you want, the right to drive the kind of car you want, etc
