59 KB Am I the only one that feels like most primetime tv does not appeal to me? Anonymous of College Park,MD 09/24/09(Thu)23:47:35 No.5582847
When I was 12 I felt like I was too old for PBS, and too smart for the programs that Disney Channel and Nickelodeon offered. The only programs left where primetime shows that the broadcast and cable channels offered, but they have no appeal on me. I had video games, but they were not an option, and at the time I was lived in an area where you had to use a car to go anywhere (it was a suburban area) so after homework most of my free time was consumed by the internet.

To this day, and despite the fact I have a HDTV with expanded cable (analog) in my dorm (I'm 21), I use the tv as background noise because most of the primetime offerings on tv do not appeal to me at all. Even the popular ones (House, Dollhouse, Heores, the Office, 30 Rock, Gossip Girl).

There's only a few shows that I'm looking forward to because most tv programs on prime time are the same murder/legal/crime/medical dramas, laugh track sitcoms, and the endless reality programs. Cable is more of the same with more repeats and bowdlerized movies.

Do you have the same feeling as me?

(In before video games, Xbox 360 and iTunes have HD programing, YouTube, Hulu, torrents, and DVD's.)

    Watch anime.

Get yourself some Legend of the Galactic Heroes if you want an intellectually stimulating series.

I'd guess very few people on 4chan watch TV. I know the only time I turn on the TV is to play a game, and sometimes I may decide to see what's on the Science Channel.

The only people that like TV are average people, and 4channers are anything but average.

I used to roll my eyes at Power Rangers because of how stupid and corny that shit was. Half the damn show was transforming and backflips. Fuck, they never even fought. Just backflips and fireworks. And when shit got serious, their little robot would come down and fuck everyone up with one sword swing. And after that, the damn turtle thing. And did you ever see them fight individually? Only when you played with the damn toys. Cheap sons of bitches couldn't make a pair of puppets ram into each other on TV, just so that we could actually see the shitty toys they were advertising.

And you gay little manchildren wonder why everyone thinks One Piece is shit.

House is the only show I can stand to watch somewhat consistantly. At times, I actually find it hilarous. I'm not so sure if I like where it seems to be heading this season though, as the premiere sort of made me a little pissed off. It felt sub-par, like the film adaptation of HP & the Half Blood Prince. Just, well, not that bad. That film was honestly one of the most boring fucking things I've sat through in a very long time.

Aside from House, I watch the news and pick out grammatical errors and invalid arguments. That's the extent of my TV experience. I've never really been at all interested in TV either. I find most of it to be droning consumer idiocy. But that's fun sometimes, right?

don't listen to this guy, anime is girl repellent
and it is not deep or intriguing, no matter what they tell you. It's the same plots wit hthe same twists and the same archetypal characters.
    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)00:01:41 No.5583023
Basically it's sports games (only teams I care about) and Burn Notice. Ghost Hunters or stargate or some shit like that if I'm really bored.

But yeah, no T.V for me really either. I've kinda gotten into following some anime shows, some of them have actually been really good and I can, for the most part, watch what I want when I want.

You're fucking stupid if you think animated media == children's shows. There are plenty of perfectly good animated series designed specifically for adults, and I don't mean hentai.

You're not "too smart for TV"; you're too full of yourself.

If you watch shows just to appeal to girls, you're probably retarded. Actually, not just "probably"--you are.

LotGH is a damn fine series. It in no way fits generic anime "roful so randumb" shit and anyone with an IQ of at least 115 should be able to fully appreciate it.
    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)00:08:50 No.5583095
Yeah it sucks. You realize you need the television for ESPN and sports because ESPN is so cool and you would never find that on the internet. ESPN is the only reason I still have television. That and Family Guy, Mad Men, [adult swim], and Comedy Central.

CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC are obvious bullcrap and makes you dumber as Noam Chomsky said. I can find news on Fark. Anything thing else on television has no reasonable value.

HBO series like Rome, Deadwood, Sopranos, Band of Brothers are the only shows that hold my interest.

And I watch most of those on DVD. I gave up on cable/network TV when Battlestar galactica ended. So much promise, such a shit ending.

OP, the hostility of these responders should be a red flag, as those who watch japanese cartoons are a hardcore bunch, and you'd have to be to appreciate them

    you get AMC, right?
Mad Men and Breaking Bad are stellar shows, Mad Men for its character development and writing, and Breaking Bad for exploring the whys of people doing bad things. And Bryan Cranston is a wickedly good actor.

Other than that, Rescue Me and Sons of Anarchy are also good shows (SoA is rewrapped Hamlet), but I don't know if that is a 'premium' channel
    >> Anonymous 09/25/09(Fri)00:13:29 No.5583147
I dunno, I usually watch TV. I don't really watch the main networks though, because I agree with you that they're pretty trite. However, I enjoy the stand up comedians on comedy central, as they poke fun at things I can relate to. I like watching shows like Modern Marvels on the history channel because I can learn something while being entertained. There's also some new channel on satellite that's all about comics and cartoons, and they had shows about Ub Iwerks and the making of Persepolis. My parents watch Turner Classic Movies because it reminds them of old films they like, and they watch HGTV for ideas on how to renovate their home.

Sure, I could read a long winded book about Engineering or the Mongol Empire (and indeed I have) but at the end of the day I really like filling my life with images, photographs, paintings and drawings, and cartoons and videos. The reason I don't use the command line in arch linux is because I wouldn't be able to view pictures and videos as easily, and there's an art to the movement of a camera that movies have to offer.

I dunno....are you for real? Or are you just feigning disinterest because of some social construct that told you TV was for morons? Most people I meet who hate TV are just elitist white people who paradoxically enjoy films but hate television.

    TV sucks.

except when its like, the wire, or ghost in the shell, of course.

to be honest i'm a little depressed with the popularity of TV. but optimistic too, with its seeming decline as the defacto entertainment source, at least with the younger edge of the population.

Cartoons in the adult humor are things that my father never grew up with because it was considered following the birth of television, cartoons should be for kids. Now there's the Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Family Guy. There's so many anime shows to offer. This is amazing!

    What's 18-1

Speaking of television, because of this topic I'm planning to use my tv as a private network/HTPC (Home Theater PC) I already have my laptop connected to my HDTV via a HDMI, and I have a Xbox 360 which is capable to streaming movies, and tv programs,I know of sites where you can direct download tv shows and movies, I have iTunes that can subscribe to tv shows via season pass (I don't have apple tv though) ,and I do download torrented downloads of british television that I view on my HDTV. But I had not really use the HDTV fulltime as part of a HTPC.

    That will change next week.

How can you be an elitist when your college mascot is the terrapin? A goddamn turtle. A creature that can breathe, shit, and reproduce from the same orifice. Also, College Park is a shit hole, and Maryland is the worst state in the union. You want proof? You can tell the quality of an area by the advertisements you see. In DC and Arlington, especially as you get close to the Pentagon, all of the ads are for Boeing and Raytheon and other defense contractors. In Maryland, all of the ads are for bail bondsmen.

Therefore, you have no right to be an elitist, and your opinions are invalid.

I've had people look at me like I wasn't right in the head for not having any sort of TV broadcasting in my house. In my opinion, TV is an ungodly waste of ones time, and is the primary medium in which mindless consumerism and "pop-culture" is forcefully projected onto people. I especially feel the same way about those crime/medical dramas. My landlord who lives downstairs watches those all evening. I've fallen asleep sitting through some. It's all the same, unimaginative garbage.
