Just a quick survey which will help me gain some insight with Japanese culture and western countries. You don't have to answer them all, but it would help me immensely if you did. Thank you kind sirs/madams.

    1. How were you introduced to Japanese culture?
    2. Have you pursued any other aspects of J-Culture such as ikebana, or origami, going to Japan, buying stuff from Japanese sites?
    3. Have you considered learning Japanese because of Japanese culture being present in our western society? If you are already learning Japanese, can you tell me why?
    4. What do you like best about Japan?
    5. What is your interpretation of the Japanese way of life?
    >> Anonymous 08/19/09(Wed)07:06:43 No.5142488
    1. I wasn't.
    2. Not a goddamn chance.
    3. I'd sooner have my tongue cut out than let that vile language diminish the purity of it.
    4. The bit when they got nuked, good times.
    5. Twisted, man-children, sick fucks.

I have to ask /r9k/ because the board about Japan is full of Touhou/lolicon faggots. No shit.

    >1. How were you introduced to Japanese culture?
Video games and anime, not sure which came first.
    >2. Have you pursued any other aspects of J-Culture such as ikebana, or origami, going to Japan, buying stuff from Japanese sites?
Does fapping to hentai counts as pursuing japanese culture...no probably not.
    >3. Have you considered learning Japanese because of Japanese culture being present in our western society? If you are already learning Japanese, can you tell me why?
I tried to learn when i was like 12 or 13. I gave up very quickly.
    >4. What do you like best about Japan?
I love japans obsession with making everything kawaii
    >5. What is your interpretation of the Japanese way of life?
It sounds very busy and stressful.

    YAAY I HELPED THE OP

And I love you for it. I'm getting a small idea but I have to filter through the bullshit most people are posting. They'd rather waste their time and complain about my thread than ignore it.

Man, you guys are douches. Go make a relationship thread or something. I'll help you out OP.

    1. Actual culture? I had a couple of friends back in high school who grew up over there. As well as a couple of friends I keep in touch with online. For everyone who says "lol animu," you have no idea. That'd be like saying you learned about western culture from the simpsons.
    2. I enjoy some animus. I have a few gundam kits too. Model building is enjoyable and those things are pretty solidly made.
    3. I've considered it and picked up a handful of phrases, but never really got around to it. I'm hoping to go into the mechatronics field, so it would probably be an asset.
    4. They're early adopters. I know a lot of has to do with the size of the country, but culture plays a part as well. They'll adopt a new cellphone technology and the like without hesitation. Here in America, many people fight tooth and claw for "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
    5. Stressful and restricting of personal freedoms. No one says what they think of each other directly out of courtesy, so things that should be fleshed out get swept under the rug. See: high suicide rate, prevalence of shut ins, etc. I'd love to live in a city like they have, but I don't think I could handle a culture like that.
    >> Anonymous 08/19/09(Wed)07:23:56 No.5142569
    1. Anime, like most other faggots here.
    2. No japanese shit but ive gone to japan to visit my brother who was stationed there.
    3. I have but I dont think it will be worth it since learning the characters would be a pain.
    4. Technology. Interactions with people & some of the small customs like the cash in the tray. Ive kinda gotten to like it.
    5. Compact life lol.
    >> Anonymous 08/19/09(Wed)07:29:12 No.5142597
    1. Studied it in the fifth grade, which sparked an interest in the "classical" culture, Age of Empires got me interested in the history and I've been learning the language since I was 12.
    2. I went to Japan on a school homestay trip, and went back with friends after high school. I've got some anime DVDs and Japanese games, as well as some nice souvenirs (authentic print of "The Great Wave", handmade fans, etc.). I listen to some Japanese music. I was thinking of taking up kendo or ninjutsu, but I'm probably too old to start either of them.
    3. I've been learning it since I was 12, because my high school had a compulsory LOTE program, and I thought I'd prefer Japanese to German. Needless to say, I stuck with it, liked it, and continued to study it into university.
    4. The people there (especially the women) were almost invariably nice to me. I was told I should become a male model in Japan by a Japanese Australian, I was adored by schoolgirls and grown women alike on my homestay trip, and I'm still in contact with a lot of friends from over there. Also, there are some very, very attractive Japanese women about.
Apart from that, the feudal history is amazing, as well as the architecture.
    5. I typed something big, but I'm apparently not articulate enough to make sense of myself, so I'll say something short and probably not very informative. From what I experience, life in Japan seems to be structured, organised, and set into a clear routine. This suits the way I try to live my life, so I personally like it.
    >> Anonymous 08/19/09(Wed)07:30:26 No.5142607
    1. I dunno, probably anime a few years back.
    2. I like the food and plan to visit Japan at some point.
    3. No, Chinese is much more useful for my career path. Might learn it eventually.
    4. Animation and food, but that is all I have been exposed to.
    5. Despite watching a lot of anime, I'm not a weeaboo faggot, so I wouldn't pretend to know.
    >> Anonymous 08/19/09(Wed)07:32:35 No.5142625
    1. Shitty, poorly dubbed animes on Cartoon Network and the like.

    2. I went to Japan but only because I like to travel and I had wanted a break from the typical European vacation.

    3. No, it's fucking stupid and pointless because if you learn Japanese you'll only use it in "GRORIUS NIPPON ^-^" and your time is much better spent learning a more widely spoken language.

    4. Food.

    5. Resent Parents but do what they say anyway -> Resent Schooling (and college) but do what they say anyway -> Resent working but do what they say anyway -> Resent family but do what they say anyway -> Die

OR After the "working" stage, commit mass homicide or chuo-side.

    1. When I was about 8 my mom and I used to always do Origami together and watch Dragonball.
    2. I've bought some music from amazon.co.jp, but that's it.
    3. I'm learning it as a stepping stone toward Cantonese, because shit, if I'm going to be learning 4,000+ kanji/hanzi I might as well make the best of them. Also, 2ch.
    4. The night life.
    5. Fast-paced.

I agree that Chinese is probably good for business. However Japanese is also useful for the worldwide manufacturing companies like Canon, FujiFilm, Mitsubishi, Toyota, etc.
I'm learning both, and I can say that China is looking for interpreters, more so than Japan.

It is useful now too of course, and my estimate of 20 years was quite conservative. In any case why not consider the long term when looking at your career options?

I'm a translator. Japanese is the second most useful language. Chinese is the first. However there are 10000 chinks over hear more fluent in it than me (though oddly enough i can write better than a lot of them) who will get the contract before i do. Japanese is good because we still trade heavily with Japan yet there are fuck all Japanese people here to steal my contracts.

So weighing things up Japanese has been more useful to me.

OP here. I'm learning Chinese and Japanese simultaneously in uni. How does one begin their career in translation? How do you get your name out there? Or is there a certain type of classifieds you can access since this is a sort of specialist job.

    Planning on being a translator?

Depends what country you live in. In Australia you don't even need a degree, just pass a test from NAATA (or some shit ..its been a while) and send out your CV to agencies. Or work for the government and get the sweetest parking, and decent pay

    1. Karate & Pokemon
    2. I went on an exchange program for 3 months
    3. I'm learning japanese because it gives me an extra 10 points or something on my enter score in VCE
    4. the people and the cities that are as bright as they are in the night as they were in the day
    5. stressful, hard working, and pretty weird when you get into subcultures.

OP here. I'm an Eco/Chin/Jap major. I'm interested in language. It's funny, but I thought about what my one goal in life was one day: to understand. I want to understand, to interpret, to help others understand, to link meaning through different mediums (language). Must've been a night where I was delirious and sleep-deprived, but it's true.

So yeah, I'm seriously considering becoming a translator. I want to travel the world. I also want to learn Korean and Spanish when I graduate.

    1. Parents both own dojos, mostly teaching some obscure style.
    2. We have a family friend back in Japan who sends us stuff. Mostly Japanese "dollar store" loot. Their candy is delicious. I learned origami as a kid not for the Japanese-ness, but for the "OMG PAPER MOUSE!!" (I was a really little kid.)
    3. I know a VERY small bit of Japanese. I didn't go out and learn Japanese, I'm just familiar with names, phrases, and so forth I grew up hearing from my parents. And my name is a Japanese name (even though we--my famly--are not Japanese. Thanks, Dad).
    4. While my parents teach martial arts, origami, calligraphy/sumie, so on and so forth, and my sister is an annoying 16 year old emo weaboo, I actually have no particular like or dislike or any real feelings about Japan as a whole whatsoever. Their food is delicious. That's the extent of my opinion.
    5. Pretty negative, actually. Mysogynistic, xenophobic. Socially repressive in every way, especially sexually (despite their...exports. Actually, causing their most famous exports). Corporations functionally enslave and practically torture employees. Not literally, I realize, but the workload, expectations and corporate culture...shit, son.
