I haven't been paying my licence for three years (ever since I left home) and yes they send "intimidating" letters every so often, but they really don't have as much power as they make out. If they call at your house you're not legally obliged to let them in unless they have a permit (which they won't. I think it was shown they get a permit a handful of times each year).

BBC 1 and 2 have a travel/cooking documentary, a damn good light comedy/drama, two pretty decent quiz shows, another decent comedy, one of the better news programs, the goddamn BRILLIANT Newsnight, and a documentary about crime. Barring BBC 1 from 8-9, there's a lot of shows that aren't bad at all, and all certainly appeal to a decent audience.

Sky 1 and 2 has 'Are you smarter than a 10 year old', two shows about customs officers, an episode of Bones, an episode of Road Wars, an episode of Lie to Me and The Usual Suspects. Some good stuff there, but anyone who's a fan of those will have seen them already. I'm a TV License Enforcement officer and I don't pay a TV license.

Every TV set or TV tuner card for a PC you buy, the store you bought it from has to report to the TV Licensing folk that you have bought something that may indicate you need a license.

If you decide not to pay the 140 quid a year, then this is what usually happens.

First, we send you letter after letter after letter saying that if you are receiving TV 'as it is broadcast' then you are breaking the law and need a TV license. Ignore all the letters.

We will send yet more letters to you. Continue to ignore them.

Eventually, maybe, we will send an licensing officer over to call your house. When he knocks your door, step outside and close the door behind you. Pull your phone out and open the video recorder. Tell him that you do not give him any permission to enter your home, and that you do not need a TV license. The recording of this is required in future when you decide to complain about us being a nuisance, and also helps if we lie (which we do) to get a warrant that we can 'hear the TV on from outside' - the recording of you talking to him will prove otherwise.

Just remember that you should never ever let us into your house, and if we do come round, video record us. If anyone is interested, it is a piss easy job for 11 quid an hour. You get a cool badge too.

As for the last bit, if you drive faster, you're more likely to hit something. And if you carry a gun, you're more likely to shoot someone. Fuck statistics, this is just basic. In actual fact, I favour higher speed limits and looser gun controls (I'm less certain on that one, it's an awkward area, really). But I certainly believe that speed limits and gun controls should exist.
