    286 KB Why Florida just plain sucks g0d !!M/1aw1CrAJA 06/24/09(Wed)23:52:22 No.4580358
Florida, as you most know from your annoying little trips you had with your parents to go to Disney World, or any other mildly entertaining amusement park, is a swamp filled, shit hole.

The temperatures are fuck hot for no reason, and we get storms from god knows where. (no pun intended) I was woken up by multiple lighting strikes in my neighbourhood, and had to check if there were warnings out because of the loud thunder, and wind that was clocking around 5mph.

The other thing is tourists. All I can say is, fuck. Most of the tourists are british, and/or they are here to check on their reality investment, and wont GIVE YOU A FUCKING TIP. Some other tourists are Germans, well with Germans, you can just laugh as they can get angry at you.

On to Disney. Yes, that wholesome magical place where parents take their screaming 5yr olds, and at the end of the day they are crying. Its pretty boring, and the only park that is good is Disney Quest, shits awesome. The other parks such as Universal, Sea World, and Busch Gardens suck. Trust me, they aren't fun. Except to see RHPS at IOA.

What part of Florida do you live in? I live in Broward and it's alright. Far enough away from Ft. Lauderdale so tourists aren't a problem, but close enough so that rednecks aren't. Far enough away from Miami such that Cubans aren't a problem, but close enough so that the coastal current makes the weather pretty nice. OK, so the rainy season does get pretty bad. Better get some industrial-strength surge protectors for everything you own or be prepared for them to blow out. Traffic is horrible, but highways are well-maintained. Terrain is flat as a pancake, but the Everglades and beach are nice. Some history, not too much. I live near some of the best public schools in the state, so I never suffered from living in the state ranked 50th (or was it 49th?) in education. And the Bright Futures program made my college education free, the colleges themselves so-so depending on program. All-in-all a real watered-down, humid place.

    1. The tiny lizards are nice, but the disease-crapping, as-big-as-a-dog Iguanas are annoying as fuck. They overrun the awesome Basilisks that I like so much. The ones that run on their hind legs and are called "Jesus lizards" 'cause they can run on water.

    2. Even way down south, even here you can see it and it's a sight. A month or so ago, it took off right at sunset and you could see the stream marking the flight trajectory reflecting the setting sun's rays. It was awesome because in the patterns of the jet, you could make out the layers of the atmosphere, the bottom layer giving off an orange glow, the upper layers giving off a different bend to the path because of the differentiation in atmosphere density and wind speeds.

    OP is 100% fucking correct.
Take it from someone who has lived in Tampa for 12 years: Florida is a shit hole, and there are much worse places in Florida than Tampa. Sure, it's okay to visit once in a while, but it fucking sucks to live here.

    1. It's extremely hot, all of the fucking time. In the middle of winter, you can expect a cool 70 degrees, and in summer, a nice, humid 97 degrees.
    2. The people in the rural areas are hicks. Yes, Florida is far more liberal than any other southern state, and it is not a part of the deep south, but believe me, the rural regions have hicks that are just as bad as anywhere else in the south. And even the more urban areas are still very conservative.
    3. Clearwater is the headquarters for Scientology. We have all the nicest cults.
    4. Old people retire here. It's not an exaggeration. Part of the reason the state is so conservative is the retirees who think Florida is a paradise.
    5. The tourists are annoying. Sure, it's nice to meet people from around the country and world, but a lot of them are annoying fat fucks.
    6. The public education system is shit. Utter shit. 49th in the nation. And because old people want all of the state money for themselves but they're all conservative, tax cuts are regarded as the solution to all woes, and because tax cuts means less state money, education is always the first to get cut. Seriously, the people don't give two shits about education. When I was in high school, we had to donate paper and supplies to the school in order to simply participate in the class, and the situation has gotten much worse. Also, I was in the IB program, so my education and funding was much muuuuch better than regular students' educations. Too bad our school was shit and shared with hyper underachieving ghetto students (the school is simultaneously a Newsweek top ranked school sending the most people in our county to Ivy League schools, and a D-ranked school.)
    >> Anonymous 06/25/09(Thu)00:30:00 No.4580612
I live in a city called Rockledge in Brevard county. It's a few miles north of Melbourne. The city is fairly populated and bustling but I don't really deal with a lot of big city shit. The weather doesn't really bother me that much, I mean yeah the summers are hot but hey at least winter is pretty nice.

Also, there is more to do around here than just expensive theme parks, there is plenty of outdoors stuff you can do here, hiking, fishing, surfing etc. But of course you guys only mention the stuff that all the tourists come here for. Speaking of which we are pretty far away from all that stuff that we really don't have to deal with any.

I don't really have any gripes about my location, maybe it's because I'm don't have to live in big places like Orlando, I dunno.

    7. The Universities are pretty crappy too. UF isn't too bad, and is pretty cheap, but there are no truly overall outstanding colleges, and most other Florida colleges are generally shit except in one or two specific fields (such as Nursing for USF.)
    8. Two words: Katherine. Harris. i.e. The Bitch who got Bush elected in 2000. Seriously. And I do mean bitch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Harris#Controversy_over_religion

There is much much more to be said about Florida, but those are major faults. Now, there are plenty of fun things to do while on vacation here. It's just the whole living here part that sucks.
    >> Anonymous 06/25/09(Thu)00:33:07 No.4580642

USF = Nursing. Hah. OK, yeah. It's a research oriented university with Moffitt and other research institutions near the grounds just taking in those nursing students.

I've lived in Tampa all of my life. Tampa has its problems, as well as Florida, but it isn't entirely bad. I will tell you that if you're looking to live in Florida, and aren't a man of the book as they say, don't bother going anywhere north of Tampa. North Floridians are swine; this is even recorded in our history when there was such a group of powerful politicians from Northern Florida called -- and I am not lying -- the "Pork Chop Gang". Pasco County and above and you're dealing with the elderly, the deranged, the morally deficient moralists... etc... They're all a mess. They live in little backwater towns where the food sucks, the people suck, and the culture is lacking.

Alright, so I'll give this anon a fair assessment of his/her assessment in the next post...

Dear God, it's like you went to the same school I did. Except the IB program at my school was as shit as the rest of the school.

Seriously though, this state is my equivalent of hell. The weather does not change. Summer? Hot as balls. Winter? Hot as balls. Christmas? Fire up the grill because surprise, it's still hot. The state also consists of two types of people:
    - Old people, who DRIVE THE WRONG WAY DOWN A ONE-WAY STREET WHAT THE FUCK.
    - The trashiest of every ethnicity.

Also, palmetto bugs. Huge ass flying cockroaches. They will get into your house no matter how clean/dirty it is. Fuck them.

    >>1. It's extremely hot, all of the fucking time. In the middle of winter, you can expect a cool 70 degrees, and in summer, a nice, humid 97 degrees.

I enjoy our humid air and temperatures. When I go out to other places in the United States the first thing I notice is the dry air and how it feels to breathe without the moisture in the air. I've come to almost require the humid air. Humid air is arguably for my own account, the best air to breathe.

    >>5. The tourists are annoying. Sure, it's nice to meet people from around the country and world, but a lot of them are annoying fat fucks.

Florida has a lot of fat people as well. I can't tell tourists from locals most of the time and I'm a native of Tampa. They're usually well mannered, and, well, like I said, I hardly notice... A lot of people aren't originally from around here so 2-3 year residents versus 2 week tourists and from just general encounters, I couldn't tell you the difference.

I used to live in Orlando and it was nothing special.

First off I hate hot weather, and I prefer distinct seasons instead of it being fucking hot all year round except for a few days where it's 50 degrees but it fucking feels like it's freezing because you're used to it being 30-50 degrees warmer.

Then there's the tourists on the highway who don't know where the fuck they're going. And fuck yeah why are so many of them British? Why do they want to come all the way over here for a vacation? Isn't there interesting shit on their side of the planet? I don't know. If I were British I'd be like fuck that I don't want to sit on a plane that long, let's go to France or something.

I've been to Universal, Sea World, and Busch Gardens. If you have an amusement park that's closer than FL go there, because it's the exact same shit. Some roller coasters and attractions, overpriced everything. You can just go ahead and spend $5 on a lidless, straw-less cup of coke at your nearby Six Flags or something. There used to be a Sea World here in Ohio and it wasn't really any better/worse than the one in Orlando. Now we only have Cedar Point but who gives a fuck? I hate amusement parks, it's all wandering in the hot afternoon sun and standing in line for a 30s roller coaster.

Also why the fuck are their like wild turkey and giant birds on streets and parking lots? I was going to my car and saw a bird damn near as tall as I was, WTF? Where I'm from, crazy fuck animals stay in the forests.

I've been living outside the Orlando area for 18 of my 21 years of life. Florida is such a swampy, touristy, bum-fucking infested shit hole, if I were ever to come to power my first order of business would be to nuke the soggy, swampy dick of the continental united states till it's a eunuch.

Disney sucks and it cannibalizes everything around here. Weather sucks; muggy and 95 degrees year round. Sure people will say, oh you live near a beach, etc. The beaches of Florida fucking suck I tell you. They are all dirty and full of rednecks. It's also impossible to find a job around where I live. Overpopulated University gobbles all the job prospects up within a 100 fucking mile radius and the economy is in the shitter down here.

Yep, King. Not a fun experience at considering the environment, but at least I sort of learned something. But needless to say, if I ever have children of my own, I will never subject them to the horrors of American public schools.

Oh, I completely failed to mention the inanity of the FCAT. Yes, it's piss easy, but whenever a school doesn't perform well, FUNDING FROM THE STATE IS FUCKING REDUCED. Yes, that'll solve the problem. What's that? Your school is underperforming? Well then, I'm sure a budget cut will set you straight.

Oh, and since no school wants their funding cut, schools literally dedicate half the school year to indoctrinating students with useless FCAT practice, and normal schooling is neglected. People become dumber because schools focus on bullshit FCAT problems, and not actual fucking school work. And the FCAT contains below average material.

Also, as with many schools in the nation where IB and traditional share a school, there is a huge pissing contest between the two programs (this doesn't have to do with Florida education itself.) Hell, the traditional administration forced Seniors, who do not take the FCAT, to cut valuable time preparing for IB exams to do FCAT practice that did not apply to them.

It's not an issue of education, it's all politics. Would local governments have a greater incentive to create covenants/suburbs (I live in New Tampa) and continue to fund their schools -- ergo creating the incentive to continue growth and development of high income areas than fund some school whose parents are on the welfare rolls? You sure bet it does. It's just using the No Child Left Behind Act to extend urban sprawl so that Tampa can bring in more tech/commercial business IMO.

I had a few friends who went to king, others who went to Tampa Prep. Let me just say this -- if I had had the luxury of a private education in my youth, I would have been a much different person today. My friends are great examples of this with their educations. This is all not to say that my own education was insufficient for my well-being, just that they were drawn to education at an earlier age than myself as I stuck with the public education system.

I went to Wharton by the way.

I've lived in Florida my entire life (19 years). Born in Tampa, moved to Daytona Beach, going to school in Orlando.

    Pros
    - Beach
    - Lots of sun = temperate climate

    Cons
    - No visible season changes
    - Very little in the way of culture
    - What "culture" exists is NASCAR and Bike Week
    - Increasingly underfunded schools

PROTIP: For ANY of you who still think Daytona Beach is a desirable as a tourist location, you have obviously not seen Daytona this decade. It's a shithole. Go waste your money in Sarasota or Cocoa Beach.

I have a lot of friends that live in New Tampa, especially Hunters Green. They all complain about strict homeowner's association rules and cramped yards.

Personally, I have no idea why so many people live in suburbs. They're cramped, monotonous, and neighbors are extremely nosy and bothersome.

Lol, from tampa going to school in tallahassee (fsu),

Having lived in many places arounf the world growing up (military family), I have to say florida is best. Temperature is hot but bearable (played paintball all day today),

and it's pretty safe save for a few sketch streets in each city/town. People are pretty nice, and in tampa there is literally an endless supply of things to do.

If you have to rely on a good school to get ahead, you're not exceptional enough, so I end up meeting very unique interesting people at uni's here.

It's hot and humid as fuck, and there are way too many old people. Also, fucking palmetto bugs are the worst.

Moved here from Illinois almost 10 years ago when I was 10 or 11, because my parents didn't like cold weather. Both of my sisters have moved back up North, and I plan to eventually. Hate this place.

I'm also a Tampa native, and while we as a whole seem to lack culture, there is a culture that has developed in our state that in some ways continues -- albeit as a corpse. I'm talking about places like Ybor, Old Tampa... UT, etc. They're not lively or even active, but they provide a backdrop that can allow for the development of some sort of shared local culture.

Most people in our state weren't born here and aren't from established families.

Yeah, I live in Tampa Palms and I remember as a kid I couldn't have a "treehouse" because it was against the deed restriction and all. Maybe I was stupid then, but I remember as a kid being told that I couldn't build one simply because of that. With these recent watering restrictions, no one can really maintain their yard and it's in your interest to have some nice shade on your property so that you won't have to replace sod every year.

I moved to New Tampa in 1989, back when Bruce B. Downs was a two lane road. Hard to imagine, but we only had one Publix and that was it for groceries. Within my life (I'm 22), I've seen New Tampa become the most unsustainable, crowded and corpulent place. This new "mall" or whatever up near County Line Road is a good example of the unsustainability of Tampa's growth.

I'm pretty sure most people who go to out of state universities do so because other universities offer them stronger programs than those in Florida colleges. Not saying there's anything wrong with staying in Florida, but you certainly can't argue that those who go elsewhere are somehow not exceptional enough, especially when they go to top universities in the country.

I live between Daytona Beach and Orlando.

+ The Springs/parks. Blue Springs, Ocala National Forest, Wekiva Springs. They all are really beautiful.
+ Acceptable local music scenes in Orlando and Tampa, good venues.

    - Driving 30 to 60 minutes to do anything worthwhile. I live in an unincorporated area in the Orlando metro area and while we do have 2 Walmarts within twenty minutes, that is about it.
    - FCAT. There are enough comments about about that one.
    - The miserable heat and humidity. It makes me not want to leave the house.
    - Suburbs, planned communities, old people.

Overall, it's completely homogeneous and uncultured.

That's pretty much it. I work at Blue Springs, and it is beautiful. The Backbooth, The Social, and Club Firestone are all decent venues for music, but half of the tours don't come here because Florida is a peninsula, which means they have to drive their busses all the way down, then all the way back up, which isn't very efficient.

Daytona and The Space Coast used to be such a nice place, but it's been trash ever since MTV began hosting the "spring break" event there.

Miami and Tampa are the only bearable cities in Florida. Orlando is full of trash, tourism and garbage. Orlando itself is rife with crime and is surrounded by rednecks.

If any of you are in Citrus County... LOL... My grandparents being the old people they are decided to move out of Tampa and go up there. When I went to Citrus County, I wore just an average button-up shirt, washed my face and had well groomed hair. I went to lunch with them, and when all of the church-goers came in and ate at their tables, they would stop and stare. When we walked out, they all stopped eating and began to stare at us walking out. They're all moralist bastards who have no morals.

I will qualify my extreme dislike for Tampa and Florida with a few concessions:

While Tampa is pretty boring, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is pretty near. I saw Faust there a couple of months ago, and it was a very pleasant experience. Also, I don't party or club, so I'm entirely ignorant about the night life and party scene in Tampa.

Beyond that, everything else said about Florida and Tampa in this thread is a fact.

Also, I am aware that people frequently dislike the region where they grew up and seek a different environment, but the faults of Florida are far beyond simple adolescent disdain. I used to live in Georgia, and while I also disliked it very much, particularly because it was either hick territory or black thug territory, depending on your location, I still liked the hilly terrain, seasons, nice looking trees, and a lot of the history in the nicer parts. Florida really is uncultured and plain.

Ideally though, I'd love to live somewhere with mountains and very few neighbors. I like Western Montana and other such regions quite a bit. However, I'm aware that if I was born there and lived there my whole life, I'd probably want to reside elsewhere for a change.

Born and raised in Miami. There are two kinds of Florida that alot of people are ignorant about. There is South Florida, Miami-Dade and Broward County, which is very liberal and progressive. And then there is the rest of Florida filled with rednecks and fundementalist christians. The more north you go in Florida the more Southern it gets.

Alot of transplants and tourists don't really experience the true Miami and/or Florida.

    -Miami-

    Pros
    -Hot Hispanic Women
    -Cuban food and coffee
    -South Beach
-Some of the best clubs/bars in U.S./World

    -Availability of drugs

    -Practically nonexistent public transportation
    -Expensive housing
    -Humidity
