I was surprised when most of my friends told me they'd been to therapy once or more in their lives. I thought it was something only totally desperate, psychotic, depressive losers did. Losers like you, robots. Got any therapy stories? Giving or receiving. I know nothing about it and would like to hear.

It actually sounds like an appealing career option (being a therapist, not being in therapy), but maybe I'm very wrong about that. I like hearing about peoples' secret inner lives and stuff like that.

    No because I'm English.

I don't see the American obsession with parents sending their kids to therapy and pumping them full of happy pills.

I'm English, but I live in Braintree, Essex. I have no idea where you live but here things are pretty terrible. Therapy is used on people who don't need it, and people who do need it are ignored. Therapists are also not trustworthy at all because they seem to like to gossip.

    Shit sux.

    I'm going for a pint...

I'm from Hull. I only know one person who had therapy and she didn't really need it, she just likes attention and liked telling everyone she was going to therapy because she thought it made her look badass.

America has privatized health care, so the companies have something to gain from convincing you that you need pills, therapy etc.

I went to therapy for a couple years due to depression. It helped me a lot and I have a lot of respect for therapists now (except psychiatrists, they hand out too many pills). I'm considering becoming one myself.

I'm American. I started seeing therapists around age 16, and I must say I've never really found one I liked. Therapists are nicer though.. it's the psychiatrists you need to watch out for..

When I was seeing a psych for my meds (and a therapist to talk), I would always think he was the worst doctor because he would ask me a question, which I would answer, and then ask me the same question worded differently maybe 5 minutes later. To me, it seemed like he wasn't listening. When I told this to my mother though, she said that's something they do to see if you're consistent or something. So basically I was going there to be tricked? Retarded.

Anyways. I think technically everyone has "problems" or could be assigned some kinda of disorder of the mood/cognition. Over the years (I'm not 23) the following problems have been attributed to me:

    depression
    bi-polar
    anxiety disorder
panic disorder (i went thru a period of time where i kept getting attacks..)
    schizophrenia

but the one I think that I feel most comfortable with now is what my last therapist mentioned, depersonalization disorder..

Meh.. the whole industry needs a major rehaul. It's driven far too much by the whole pharm. business. I take 40mg of Prozac a day now and after I'll I've been on.. it has been the most helpful, I think.

I had 5 or 6 different counsellors. When I was younger I was molested and my mom thought they would help me get over it. I wasn't really fucked up enough for a psychiatrist. I turned out fine, but it definitely wasn't with any help from the cousellors. They always asked me to "paint my emotions" or make them out of clay or other happy fairy bullshit that just pissed me off.

They're making sure they're not being considering they're handing out medicine

lie to your therapist, never get better

I'm in the US, a schizoaffective NEET. I have never had a good therapist, mostly because I can't pay for it. They're either expensive or hard to find. And if you're seriously mentally ill, usually you don't have a vast income, for some strange reason! Most qualified therapists deal with the "worried well," not the truly crazy. That's left to social workers and prison guards.

I had one therapist who talked more about her own problems than mine. Another was more interested in getting me into vocational rehab than actual therapy. I already know I'm hardcore unemployable, I don't need it hammered in my face anymore. :(

I never went for therapy because I know the sorts of questions they're going to ask. I'm just as capable of asking myself those questions.
