  • STOP INTERNET CENSORSHIP—TWO BILLS IN CONGRESS UNDERMINE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE WEB

American Censorship Day: November 16, 2011
On November 16th, the "Stop Online Piracy Act" will be heard in Congress. This legislation, in addition to the Senate's "Protect IP Act," completely undermine and fundamentally change the core principles of the Web. They have the potential to radically alter or shut down sites like YouTube, Flickr, 4chan, others, and all new companies that follow.
See americancensorship.org for more and help us stop these bills from becoming law.

(Site back online after DDoS—sorry about the downtime. Be sure to follow @4chan and @moot on Twitter and check status.4chan.org in the event of future downtime.)

Came across "The Cyberbully" on Netflix. It was posted on /b/ a lot when it first aired and I never got around to watching it, I was wondering if anyone on arcanine had seen it.

It got me thinking, honestly. ABC family is obviously highly conservative Christian. These are the people in real life who vote against anti-bullying legislation, especially that protecting gays.

In this movie, we have an upper middle-class blond haired blue eyed white girl and a technology-fearing, over protective mother. The girl is "bullied" on trivial aspects of her life such as her shoes and what kind of music she likes. Our little protagonist quickly takes these things directly to heart, seemingly have nothing of actual importance to worry about.

She joins a social networking site, "clickster", and is subsequently "hacked". "I'm a dirty bad girl, and someone needs to spank me" is posted on her profile. Within moments, she has dozens of comments from boys, and begins crying almost as if 90% of girls on Facebook don't attention whore intentionally and thoroughly enjoy it.

So, the world according to ABC is such:
The world is a scary, scary place. You should never, EVER under any circumstance allow your son/daughter to use technology until they're in their twenties. They're still children after they're eighteen and you're entitled to continue to control them past this point. Don't worry if they hate you, it's just all that teen angst. It's important that we allow kids to be kids, and bullying isn't the end of the world, as long as your target is not a straight, affluent, christian, at least moderately attractive white girl.

    All of my why.

You forgot the part where a gay kid sticks up for her and its implied that basically his bullying for being homosexual is nothing compared to her pain.

I thought the entire movie was pretty hilarious, and watching it with /v/ while having a decent person playing it makes it all the better.

Seriously though, I wish people were this fucking sensitive as portrayed in the movie. Even the weakest troll from 4chan could have the entire school committing suicide.

I have not seen the film, it might be particularly ridiculous but it has some serious points about harassment and peer abuse over the internet.
