  • STOP INTERNET CENSORSHIP—TWO BILLS IN CONGRESS UNDERMINE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE WEB

American Censorship Day: November 16, 2011
On November 16th, the "Stop Online Piracy Act" will be heard in Cogress. This legislation, in addition to the Senate's "Protect IP Act," completely undermine and fundamentally change the core principles of the Web. They have the potential to radically alter or shut down sites like YouTube, Flickr, 4chan, others, and all new companies that follow.
See americancensorship.org for more and help us stop these bills from becoming law.

(Site back online after DDoS—sorry about the downtime. Be sure to follow @4chan and @moot on Twitter and check in the event of future downtime.)

Anyone want to help explain to me what the Stop Online Piracy Act/Protect IP Act will do and how they will "radically alter or shut down sites like YouTube, Flickr, 4chan, others, and all new companies that follow."?
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:59:53 No.401455
It won't, it'll just make websites like Pirate Bay super illegal and make people who do that kind of shit go to jail.

A bunch of people who want to watch free movies and listen to free music being a bunch of crybabies, basically.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)02:01:15 No.401470
    >>401455
So they're just cutting down on people who download music/movies? Or just the people that run the sites?

Visiting the sites will become a crime.

they want to make sites who "serve no other purpose" than to pirate shit illegal.

I guess the problem comes when the government gets to decide what those sites are.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)02:03:10 No.401485
4chan will most likely be taken down.

    Really.

Enjoy our freedom while it lasts.

Well the sites won't exist if they are U.S. based or they'll be blocked in the U.S.

Damn... I haven't bought music in a while, do people still buy cd's? Will I have to get an iPod and get music from iTunes? I like having my music library portable and able to be transferred to different devices when I change operating systems. WIll I not be able to do this anymore?

This. The government has the power to force ISPs to block or slow traffic to sites they choose.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)02:05:21 No.401508
I don't get this.. does the law only apply in america?
What happens to people from other countries? Can we still use the sites?

    Hyperbolic bullshit

Though it's a slippery slope. Basically the government can use it to ban sites they don't like. Like the FCC for the internet.

But that doesn't mean they can instantly block sites with the touch of a button. I doubt it's more than a measure to stop people downloading every movie currently out, then gloating about it.

What did you fucking idiots think would happen?

I'm not in favor of the government controlling all aspects of the internet.

But honestly- piracy and all of the free stuff people enjoy are a luxury. An illegal one.

There are thousands of sites that you can stream and download free stuff off that are not based in America and if Americans are blocked from visting those sites it wont be long till another one pops up. The real threat is sites like 4chan and and other american based websites because they can shut them down and regulate them as they wish. This is not just about pirating, it seems like a lot of effort just to stop people stealing music and movies.

High quality mp3s, actual files you can keep forever and amazon actually keeps infinite space available to back the mp3s up should you ever lose them.

I believe some places give you options like .wav and flac.

But also, CDs are fairly cheap now.

    Same.
If the American government shuts down 4chan, well, why the fuck would they even. just because people bitch about the government here?
or is it because of something else. and don't give me shit about the child porn thing, that hasn't been happening for ages.

The vibe that I am getting here is that the American government simply wants to make the internet a giant book that people can read but cant contribute to.

Seems to me they want to control the information and conversation that is shared.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)02:20:26 No.401630
Will this affect sites that stream sports? I'm pretty sure that's illegal. It sucks that I live in an area to attend school and can't watch my home sports team. I've asked my cable company if I can pay extra to get the local channels from home (it's not far away, I live in Baltimore and want to follow my DC teams) but apparently that isn't possible. My only option is watching them online. My apartment complex is prewired to verizon so getting direct TV and paying for the NFL sunday ticket would be a huge pain... plus that's only for football.

HAHAHAHA yeah even if that passes, it's NOT going to do SHIT to piracy.

People will always find a way. The internet is based on FREEDOM OF INFORMATION.
I won't even bother listing the hundreds of networks that facilitate piracy that can get around this.
If it really came to the point where you pay for each youtube video and every user has a government tracked ID to access internet, nerds would start a new internet.

    Independent artists will.

Look at the Radiohead model. Self releasing material- like movies and music- is becoming more and more popular. Even if the money doesn't go directly to the artists, indie labels that don't make a lot of money will also still suffer because people will still pirate the shit out of their work.

Protecting those people and their work is not something I'm against.
