  • STOP INTERNET CENSORSHIP—TWO BILLS IN CONGRESS UNDERMINE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE WEB

American Censorship Day: November 16, 2011
On November 16th, the "Stop Online Piracy Act" will be heard in Cogress. This legislation, in addition to the Senate's "Protect IP Act," completely undermine and fundamentally change the core principles of the Web. They have the potential to radically alter or shut down sites like YouTube, Flickr, 4chan, others, and all new companies that follow.
See americancensorship.org for more and help us stop these bills from becoming law.

(Site back online after DDoS—sorry about the downtime. Be sure to follow @4chan and @moot on Twitter and check in the event of future downtime.)

So I ran across this on Tumblr.

Does this piss anyone else off? They really think that THEY were responsible for those memes?

    God damnit
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:39:47 No.401215
It does piss me off, but I don't know, I don't really care.

Remember that tumblr is pretty much babby's first internet outside of Facebook (for most people). They probably also think they're the first person to anthropomorphize websites. Tumblr isn't bad, but like everything else, you have to ignore 98% of it.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:41:52 No.401242
tumblr is just /b/ dumbed down(hard to believe its possible)
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:42:21 No.401243
    Short answer: Yes. They do.
I'm really just baffled on why you'd follow a blog that posts this shitty sort of stuff (assuming). Tumblr can be alright if you follow things that apply to your interest rather than a bunch of people you know in real life that post page after page of generic shit pictures.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:42:53 No.401250
Meme ownership is a shell game. The problem with places like reddit or tumblr or know your meme and whatever else isn't that they're "stealing the credit," it's that they propagate the idea that there was anything to "steal" in the first place. No part of MEEEEMS should ever have been treated like they were "official."

They're just stupid shit to pass the time with. All are equally irrelevant.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:43:17 No.401256
    reddit is pretty bad imo.
    >le
    so...much....hate...
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:43:36 No.401261
Is tumblr like a unified thing? I thought it was just a free blog hosting site like blogspot or something.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:44:06 No.401270
OP did you make any of those?

Then why the fuck do you care

    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:45:25 No.401283
tumblr is entirely based on passing around other people's content and getting your dick sucked for having a sense of humor or taste. the most popular tumblr blogs out there have virtually no original content -- they repost from reddit, 4chan, other blogs, reader submissions, whatever. bottom line: they're wallowing in and eating each other's shit before shitting it out for others to consume, and i'm happy to leave them to it
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:46:22 No.401292
    *LE AHEM*
like you can prove 4chan actually made those
for all we know that was all reddit
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:47:14 No.401303
meh I think 4chan just thinks everything on the internet started here so it has some false sense of superiority. Tumblr has stolen memes, yeah, but it's the fucking internet. Every community does it. I just prefer 4chan's format so I come here rather than the other places.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:48:08 No.401314
    >>401261
I thought it was this too.
    And then I googled it.
    And that's what it is.
    I'm really fucking confused.
    >> Anonymous 11/16/11(Wed)01:48:22 No.401321
it would be interesting if this US internet censorship law passes if everyone could overwhelm the system by trying to claim ownership of memes, the law would be overkill and the whole internet would die in less than a week

    >Google looks like he is ready to start some shit and pull out the union required salaryman whooping stick.

I like this image OP. It perfectly acknowledges my great fear for Google's imminent mental breakdown and subsequent ass-whooping festival.

Yes tumblr is shit. but why do you care? so is /b/

i don't care if 14 year old girls spam old unfunny memes, and feel oh so original and special and "in". i don't even know the difference between tumblr and reddit.

To be fair there are different kinds of internet fame. On one hand, you've got the content creators who produce the new things that we go all abuzz for. On the other you've got people who act like curators and cull through a lot of streams of content and pick out what they think is the best. And like it or not, a good curator can make a good content producer get more fame.

Buuuuut... if you're like the chive who posts content without giving a linkback to the originator, you can choke on a bag of dicks. Attribution is super important.

    >>401261
that IS what it is. thing is, tumblr's structure encourages the formation of enormous interconnected cyclical webs that circulate the same shit between hundreds of vaguely-related blogs as new content propagates across the site. this in itself is not a bad thing. unfortunately the people who are most vocal about using tumblr (high school girls) are also the most retarded users, and they're the ones who like to pass this stuff around and pretend they're part of INNERNET MEEMS. Just like reddit and 4chan, there are nuggets of gold floating down the river of feces, but at first glance the whole thin seem entirely repellent

and that's the trouble with tumblr. right there under every reblogged post it says "reblogged from x." it also lists the original source, that is, the first blog that posted it, but attribution to sites outside tumblr is rare. on tumblr, you are judged by the sum total of your posts -- you paint a picture of your taste over time, and other like-minded people follow you to get their eyes on the stuff you like more easily. credit or attribution for an image goes to the preceding link in the chain, and after enough reposts and reblogs and edits and commentating, these people manage to convince themselves that this shit somehow materialized out cyberspace and landed in the middle of tumblr for them to enjoy. tumblr is self-contained and self-absorbed in a way i've never seen anywhere else online.

    I've been on 4chan for ~5 years
I've been on tumblr for a couple months

I like tumblr and I think it's cute when they assume they invented various memes that are actually from here.

don't get mad, OP. It's really not important.

Also, in my professional opinion 4chan is full of likeminded hardcore male nerds and tumblr is full of likeminded hardcore female nerds. tumblr could only be more relevant to my interests if it were an anonymous imageboard.

also for those who are wondering how the fuck tumblr works as a "community" rather than independent blogs...

if you are not following a tag for something you are a huge fan of, you're doing it wrong. i don't really care about the blogs that post old memes and cute animals and shit, but i follow a few tags for tv shows, books, etc. and those communities can be like a circus. reminds me of /tv/ in 2007-09. Be prepared for a shitton of gay fanart, though, tumblr being full of your equally perverse and fanatical female counterparts

no. recent stuff. i don't remember what it was, but it really wasn't that great.

i can't decide what's worse -- the screengrabs of posts from other sites, or the SCREENGRABS OF REDDIT POSTS. the people on this fucking website are so goddamned pleased with themselves that they submit their own responses to content as new content. holy shit, i still can't believe it.
