Is it even acceptable for a politician to deny the fact of evolution?
    >> Anonymous 02/09/09(Mon)19:30:59 No.3091433
Apparently. Most Republicans deny evolution. I don't know if they do it to gain evangelical (ie, ignorant) votes or if they genuinely don't believe in reality.

Well that used to be the case and as Christianity has done pretty much every time that mountains of evidence for something that contradicts their position arises, they change their story to include now indisputable facts and then try to shove it into their own old ideas saying that it actually proves they are right. Now christnuts think that they are real, just that humans lived along side of them. Have you ever heard a christian trying to claim that Balthazar was actually a dinosaur? Pretty freaky stuff

It is acceptable for politicians to deny the theorem of evolution if they are eminent and experienced scientists presenting an alternate theorem which is falsifiable and matches the evidence better.

Also if I took away one good thing from Religulous it's that the Vatican has scientists and they think evangelicals are crackpots to deny evolution.

A theory is a framework of organized, tested and/or falsifiable ideas that is used to propose a solution to a natural phenomenon. Theories range from the Theory of Gravity (er, we're pretty fucking sure it's right) to String Theory (er, we have no fucking clue if it's right or not), in veracity. The defining quality of a theory is not how TRUE it is. The defining quality of a theory is what it DOES. Namely, a theory is a set of ideas that go about explaining some heretofore unexplained natural phenomenon.

Well, no, not personally, but there has been a case of evolution happening in our time.

The Finches that Darwin used for his theory have evolved in our time because there was a long time of rain, or something like that, and their beaks adapted to this to be able to get more food.

Sup, San Diego fag here. We have some pretty batty right-wing Christians, too. But really, even if they don't realize it, their strife is a political one, not a religious one (or, for the dumber ones, just an intelligence one.) I tend to see religion as a tabula rasa; stupid lies outside the realm of theism, despite what many, many, many cynical atheists would have you believe.

Note that this doesn't apply to the Christian fundamentalist movement, which is growing rapidly, but still relatively small and relatively new.

    >don't bother realizing that most Christians see actual Christian teleology just as made-up as we do
i do, and i consider the entire point of someone defining themselves as one thing and not actually accepting the implications as one of the most idiotic and dishonest things someone can do. i mean, who would walk around saying they are a republican, but vote democrat and never agree with any republican policies? or identify as a buddhist but go to church every week, perform christian traditions and not know the first thing about the eightfold path? people dishonest with themselves who engage in doublethink is who.
that 'end of faith dude', who is sort of a douche, defines this moderate belief as 'failed extremism', and i'm inclined to agree. people like that aren't christians at all as far as i am concerned.
    >Religion as a cultural device is more about moral order and answering unanswerables than it is about how big the Big Imaginary Dude In The Sky's cock is, in cubits.

No, but that you have to talk about it in terms of "Denial" means that you are a Believer. That means that you accept science as replacement for theology and have adopted a theology of science which makes a mission out of destroying other theologies.

There is nothing noble about believing in science and there is nothing noble about violently disrespecting the beliefs of others. There are maybe about 1-2% of people who will have their day to day thoughts about evolution actually matter. Odds are you're not one of them, so really, why bother with a little war when you are never going to really mess around with it anyways?

Anti-evolutionists make me rage so hard.

I mean, I've only done about 2 years where I volentarily studied Biology, and I could quite easily teach the fundimentals of evolution to a 7 year old and they would understand it.

I could, if I were so inclined, teach them in depth about how the process happens, or go into the more hardcore ideas such as HGT and sexual selection.

I can even give documented proof of evolution - be it scientific experiment, natural studies (moths, wolves, etc) or unnatural selection in animals such as mice and dogs.

I could even take time out to explain some of the aspects they see as impossible (genes created by chance, wings evolving, eyes evolving, etcetc) by using scientific views

It just infuriates me that the whole thing is so simple to learn and research and they don't bother.
Anyone, on topic; no, it isn't acceptable.
Not just because it's such an obvious truth (albeit incomplete), but also because it's at the backbone of modern biological science, and without that science we would be screwed when it came to finding cures for serious desieses, or even preventing the flow of those desieses in the first place.

Denying it would be on par with denying the basic laws of physics in terms of stupidity, as without those laws we would still be in the dark ages, and neuclear weapons could be seen as 'no threat, because they don't work'

I have found the opposite to be true. The more we discover about Science, the more science can be applied to religious text, and the more we are allowed to think about God. In fact, evolution likely cannot occur without some type of higher power, whether it be God, or energy. Science brings things about Faith to light, and vice versa.

You are an idiot. Faith isn't based on anything but blind belief. You can believe and pray all day if you want, but in the end no magical entity is going to save you from the embrace of the cold ground.

Your "faith" is just the evolution of the childlike beliefs of our Cromagnon ancestors and Neanderthal cousins. It's just the same thing ignorant humans have been doing for millions of years: attributing scientific phenomena to some magical source.

Hey rowboats, how about a compromise?
God is a brilliant and all powerful creator, but instead of making everything happen as it happens, He wisely establishes a set of laws that every particle of His creation must obey, and will allow for the development of complex orgainisms. He then starts of with a bang, and the system is in motion, only needing slight tinkering every now and then. Why this way? He gets to sit back and watch the universe unfold, rather than having to make every bit of it happen. A little surprise every now and then spices up eternity. And Genesis can very easily be interpreted as a metaphor for evolution, as the things created get progressively more complex, the same general trend for evolution.
Pure creationists are retarded, but there are reasonable theistic alternatives.
tl;dr Gray area is a happy place sometimes.

Hahah, more atheist arrogance. Faith is not blind belief. Faith is whatever you want it to be. For me, it is placing belief in a higher being, and then asking questions, doing research, and finding new ways to think, and new ways to apply thought. I do not have the answers, I have an idea for living. And whether death is nothingness, or an afterlife, or something in between, I can rest assured that I found solace with myself, my co-inhabitants, and the universe.

The idea that evolution caused the big bang is absurd, unproven by any scientific process and utterly ridiculous as the basis for a religion. If it wasn't the fact that the big bang occured billions of years before the earth even existed it's the only argument atheists use to back it up being "there is no physical proof of god". For a start dragging god into this is irrevelant (it's annoying how atheists try to drag god into every discussion) and secondly god is a metaphysical concept so physical proof doesn't prove anything either way to begin with.

    Short answer is "Not acceptable"

The long answer is that chemicals react with one another within contraints, and those constraints are entirely within the measure of natural events, of either forming chemicals that are capable of replication, or altering existing chemicals that replicate.

    tl;dr
Just you go ahead and try to deny evolution, just realise that you'll be denying basic chemistry and chemical reactions. FYI, you'll fail every fucking time, because you can not physically deny shit like hydrogen-carbon bonding.
