wasn't studying or teaching, but I lived in the Aomori Prefecture
(northern honshu) for 3 years when my dad was in the Air Force. I
never really experienced any racism or general disrespect, everyone I
met was genuinely nice to me, but then again I lived in an area with a
higher-than-average American population. It really depends on
where you are. The thing is, with JET, you don't choose where you go.
You might end up in a smaller town where you might find it more
difficult, or a big city that's used to foreigners. But for
the most part, as long as you don't act pompous or pretend that you
speak fluent Japanese (you never will) you should be well-accepted.
Humility is key in all of Japan, and this will take some getting used
to - whether it's learning to keep completely silent on the subway,
learning what topic are appropriate in certain situations, not eating
standing up, not sticking your hashi (chopsticks) straight up in a bowl
of noodles, or just remembering to take your shoes off in the
entranceway of a house. Great experience though, 10/10, would go again.
