70 KB hobbies for nerds Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)03:11:24 No.2899411
What are some hobbies for geeky introverts that are fun, inexpensive, socially including, and require one to get out of the house? Gaming is good, but It doesn't get me anywhere. I can't do sports or camping or any of that bullshit. Need some ideas.

You could possibly ask to reserve time and a table at a local gaming (Table-top) shop. A couple of them allow that here. You basically get to be a raging hardcore nerd out in the open and it attracts the attention of other role players, setting you up for the chance to do some socializing.

It does? Shit, I guess I'm just going to the right place then. The shop that I do it allow it for free as long as we respect store rules.

Then again, when I hold gaming sessions, one of us usually ends up buying a new rule book or something.

why can't you camp? shit, camping nowadays isn't camping, it's drinking with trees around you. my friends and i camp many times a year and i'm the only one who can start a fire without some contraption like a firestarter or gas or whatever.

its kinda pathetic, because i get black-out drunk when i camp, and no one tends the fire (Because they are all suburbanite dumbfucks when it comes to the wilderness, but so am i, what the fuck), so it goes out, and no one can start it, so no one eats cookable food until i wake up. it's actually kind of an ego boost for me, but shitsux for them. Hahahaha. but i digress.

-bars, especially during sporting events. you don't even have to like the sport or sports in general, its just the social gathering. you'll notice that most of the time they don't even pay attention to the game/fight/match because they are busy drinking and socializing.

also, gaming. everyone fucking plays games nowadays. get some multiplayer going. mix in some marijuana if that's your thing. getting stoned and playing xbawkz is one of my favourite things to do with my friends.

when i think of geeks i think of ppl who are interested in electronics or hacking, and i used to too.
its kind of cool out prowling the streets for old tv sets or computers, looking for parts. or hanging out in bookstores hunting for some arcane text. not for everyone, but its a fulfilling hobby.

I tried playing Yu-Gi-Oh! last year. Spent $250 before I realized how big of a fucking idiot I was.

Don't try Yu-Gi-Oh!...do try Magic, as I have friends who play it and say it's much better.

Warhammer or Magic are good starts but they are somewhat pricey to get started. Once you have an army/deck built up though, you are set. You can attend tournaments and make friends with people who are playing in the shop.

"Hackerspaces" are horrible and are full of the most more-l33t-than-you degenerate shitstains. There's nothing you can do at a hackerspace that you can't do at home on IRC with far more qualified people from all over the world.

How in the FUCK do you not know 4 square?!

What the fuck did you do in elementary school during recess? I played the shit out of 4 square. All the kids from my grade would always monopolize it. We would team up to get the younger kids out. Straight out lie about it if we had to.

Also, Disc Golf is fucking spectacular.

I started a DJing hobby about a year ago, after having collected roughly 40 GB of alternative/indie dance tracks from various MP3 blogs. I bought myself an M-Audio X-Session Pro MIDI controller ($99) and used the included Torq software. Recorded a few mix sets, put them out on Facebook, got invited to play at house parties, and I'm currently arranging to play at a local bar every week. Shit's fun, man.

    Oh yeah, this
DJing is the easiest bullshit sort of "musician" you can be and still gain respect. It's pretty much just introducing a bunch of complete strangers to your music collection.

also, do you have a laptop, or just the controller? i'd love to do this, but have no laptop...
    >> Anonymous 01/25/09(Sun)04:43:02 No.2900221
    >>2900009
That's pretty much what I consider it to be. I don't pretend to have any real skill other than knowing what songs sound good with each other and when to fade over to the next track. My current setup doesn't allow for any really fancy tricks anyway, so the most I can pull off is basic looping and cue-juggling. Still, it is incredibly fun to do when you've got a receptive crowd.

Yes, I have a laptop (as implied when I mentioned using software, since the controller is USB-only). If you're just starting, I'd recommend you get a hang of things on your current system and worry about your "live" equipment later. You could even get comfortable using just your keyboard as a controller, though personally I don't think I could do without my faders and knobs.

    Circuitbending.
By fiddling around with electronics, you try to find new uses for old appliances. You can make musical instruments for some kind of a band, for example.
