    Ok robots, here's the deal:
I live in the suburbs in Michigan, and it's killing me. I hate living in suburbs, I hate all the people I know, I hate my family, and I want to get the hell out.
So I want to move to a city (not Detroit, at least as far as Chicago) and kind of start over. But I have no idea what city is a good choice. I've been to DC a lot, and love it there, but I know there are a bunch more options.

So what I ask of you robots is, If you are a cityfag, what city do you live in?
    Do you like it there?
    What's minimum wage?
What's the going rate for a small apartment?
    How's the public transportation?
And anything else you'd like to share.

Thank you in advance for any help.

    Like it there? NO
    minimum wage: $7.50

Do not get out of the suburbs under any circumstances
you are living the life that we city folks can only dream of

Living in a city is a great way to:

    shorten your life
compromise your integrity on a daily basis
    become miserable
work a horrifically boring job for less pay

Find a small town with a lot of character. I think people don't realize how awesome these are. Also, as much as /r9k/ derides them, hipsters are pretty fucking awesome to live with. A lot of them have tons of money, so the economies are never bad, most of them have good taste in things (however contrived), and they are usually a lot more pleasant to be around and cleaner than regular folk.

I have a friend who moved to Silverlake, California with a community college degree and worked all sorts of awesome odd jobs (He was a painter's apprentice, librarian, stone polisher, and chef) and he loves it. There are a lot of said tons in more progressive places like California, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, New Hampshire, and believe it or not, Austin and the surrounding suburbs.

Second this. Lived in the heart of a city all my life and I just want to get away to the suburbs.

people who grow up in the city don't want to stay in it.

TRUTH. Lived in an apartment all my life. I long for a house with a yard. And TREES.
    >> Anonymous 01/22/09(Thu)10:02:14 No.2864766
Live in St. Paul, Minnesota. used to live in Minneapolis.
I don't prefer it here compared to Minneapolis. The minimum wage here 7 bucks. Small apartments vary from place to place. Public transportation is nice due to the 2 hour and a half transfer we get.

No tollbooths. Overall if your looking for a smaller city you could come here since it would take 10 St.Pauls to even come close to just the size of Chicago.

To live in the suburbs here is to be a rich motherfucker. Are you rich OP? And is /trv/ down or something?

People who grow up in the suburbs don't want to stay in it either.

    Grass is always greener, etc.

And I probably should have said this earlier, but I don't want to live in the city forever. Just for a few years, while I go to school or something. I just can't stand the idea of living in this town my whole life.

    New York City
    Usually love it
No idea. I never see any job for less than $10/h though.
Really expensive. I live in Brooklyn and pay $500, and that's in a bad neighborhood and with three roommates. In Manhattan, it would be at least twice as much for something this size, probably closer to 3x.
Public transportation is the best in the world, I don't use anything else.
Living in a city isn't for everyone. A lot of times, I do think about what >>2864743 said, because I've only lived in cities or suburbs my entire life.

I've lived in many places, cities, villages. I've lived in several countries too. I've lived in suburbs as have I lived in the center of a capital.
All I can say is that suburbs suck niggerdick. Those lame little shitholes in the middle of buttfuck nowhere. God I hate it. I'm not even especially rich. But still, a city is where one should be. I haven't been in America yet though so I don't know how it is there.

Japan has the best public transit in the world. A train is considered "late" if it's a minute off schedule. Often trains are on schedule to the second.

I live in NYC, & all I have to say is our transportation is maybe at a C level compared to even other cities in the country, lest us not even get started on the tube in London and other European cities.

Everything mostly runs on time, but there is trash and graffiti on everything and it always smells like urine.

I live in Toronto, and love it. Minimum wage is $10/hour, but most menial jobs pay at least $12. Apartment will run you at least $500, more closer to downtown/the lake. Transportation is very good, but subject to strikes every 5-6 years (we just had one this summer that shut the city down for 4 days).

    >>2864883
Nah, don't do Philly either. You might get a decent apartment for a pretty good price... but if you're not used to seeing niggers everyday, then I wouldn't recommend it.

Philly is horrible. The most classist city I've seen in a long while. I mean there are certainly rich parts of Manhattan, but at least you see non white people in them. In Philly, you either live in the affluent parts (which actually resemble the suburbs inside the city) or with the lowest common denominator niggers.

    Fuck that place.

    I say Portland.

Its ok. Given the opportunity I would move though.
    $8.07
A studio will run you at least $650, usually more.
Public transportation here is pretty good IMO. In fact we're running up the state deficit to make it even better.

I agree with this >>2864743. I lived outside of the city most of my life and being here now for school I think its only good for the occasional visit or to work in.

Chicago, where I live, is like michigan, if michigan didn't suck. I am originally from ann arbor, so I have a basis for comparison. The on;y difference is friendliness, people aren't friendly in the city, and it can be really hard to make friends. Also, your questionaire is really vague, when you say small apt, are you talking studio or 1 bed room, cause I just signed a lease for a 1 bedroom for 775, which is pretty cheap, and minimum wage is more of a vague construct because you could never live off of minimum wage in any city, so they pay you above minimum in the cities. CTA rocks though, except they keep raising the price, I recommend moving near an eL stop though, as the buses are really slow. I love it here though.

I may not be with them, but it's still the same town. I see them once ever week or two, and I really don't like that. If I live at least a few states away, they can't keep calling me to bail them out of whatever stupid problems they have.

    NYC
    YES
Most low end jobs are $9 to $10 an hour.
I live in nice neighborhood in central Queens, I pay $1400 a month for a 3 bedroom, heat included.
Public transit is great, though they've been threatening to cut it because of the recession.

Queens is a weird midpoint - by NYC levels it feels suburban, but it's still more bustling then many boring small cities.

I love it here, but I'm a native, I have no idea how someone who grew up clueless in the suburbs would handle it.
Then again, Detroit is far worse then NYC in crime, so you might be fine.

The entire world moves here, there must be a reason.
    >> Anonymous 01/22/09(Thu)11:25:02 No.2865235
suburbs of detroit here. I hate it here so much, can't even find a fucking job. I moved to Boston over the summer and it was just a total mindfuck how better everything there is.

It's pretty expensive to live there but you can find a good place pretty cheap and minimum wage is higher than here too. Public transportation is pretty damn good as well, it sucks living without it at this point.

    City: Windsor Ontario

It's like Canadian Detroit, minimum wage is whatever the fuck they want to pay you (I've heard of people getting $6 an hour.) Apartments are cheap if you get a shitty one ($300 a month) but you can get a decent one for about $600 a month. Transportation is shit, you have to wait about 30 minutes at any given time for a bus (they are never on schedule) and taxi's do not know the street names. Right now it's snowy, and cold- which is to be expected.

In general, I would prefer to be in Toronto simply because there is more stuff to do. Here, you can walk to one variety store or the other one D=

For the love of god, don't live in Orlando if you even kind of like to do drugs recreationally. I got arrested and sent to Orange County jail last night for .1 grams of pot, and its like that for a lot of laws down here. Basically, unless you really really really have to live here (school/really good job) then don't. The people in the city are dumb as hell, terrible drivers, not terribly nice, and are just pretty shitty people in general. Even in the rich burb where I go to school the people are dumbfucks, just with a ton of money.

Minimum wage and public transportation both suck hard (as usual for a red state), but housing isn't too bad. Just don't live here if you don't have to.
