I suspect I fall into the category you're asking about, at least by your estimation, so I'll do what I can to answer your question.

The internet is no longer a bastion of "nerd" types, but they still have a strong foothold, and 4chan is one place where they flourish. Many of the people who come here value intelligence and see themselves as highly intelligent. This attitude often leads to affectations and games of intellectual one-upmanship. Furthermore, while I don't want to overgeneralize, I think I can safely say that many 4chan users have difficulty in social situations, and many traditional social cues are missing in 4chan anyway, so it can be a fairly rude environment.

/r9k/ is essentially 4chan's "general discussion" board. That wasn't its original intention, but it is used more for discussion than the actual discussion boards. This may appeal to the sort of person you dislike, and either way it certainly exposes flaws that the image-oriented boards conceal.

I consider "pretentious" to mean "affectedly bombastic," essentially. A pretentious person, to me, is one who behaves in a lofty and supposedly-intellectual manner, not because it comes naturally but as a conscious social manoeuvre.
