So what does /r9k/ think of socialism? Not communism but socialism. Democratic socialism to be precise.

    >> Anonymous 01/15/09(Thu)14:53:28 No.2782795
It's fundamentally superior to what the United States, and most other countries have at the present, however, the U.S. won't implement it because of the stigma of both the Nazi party and Communism (neither of which were Socialist, they were both tyrannies rules by a singular person, Hitler and Stalin respectively).
    >> Anonymous 01/15/09(Thu)14:54:47 No.2782812
Socialism rewards those who do nothing and punishes those who work. Governments also tend to fuck shit up when they get involved, such as with bailouts or not allowing a free market.

OP here. Finally someone who agrees with me. People seem to think of socialism as totalitarianism or a fascist dictatorship.

Yes, Socialism sounds great on paper but realistically people's own greed gets the better of them, that's why Capitalism is so successful

Capitalism (for example in America) is successful in America but it exploits 3rd world countries. Capitalism is survival of the fittest but it is never fair.

Say what you will about whether or not the concept is fundamentally flawed, but 'paying even more in taxes for unskilled workers to continue to whine about how their Starbucks 9-to-5 job should totally support their family of four in some city with rather high living costs' isn't a really great motivation for continuing to work at some thankless job with a substandard quality of life, all while looking forward to a 401k that will be slashed to basically nothing and meager-even-if-they-existed-in-the-first-place social security benefits at 70 or when-the-fuck-ever.

The problem is that it disguises itself as a free market when it isn't. So people think that free markets don't work.

I don't consider European welfare states socialist as the means of production are (mostly afaik) privately owned. Just because they have a few more "socialist" policies doesn't change that they are mostly capitalist, even if they aren't laissez-faire.

I've never had any problem with unions, but I fail to see why they need to be socialist, or any kind of communal ownership for that matter.

Under conservative regimes planned economies in the form of corporatism become meritocratic very quickly and cooperate well with unions. South Korea, Singapore and France are examples.

On the other hand socialist regimes which nationalise economic establishments, effectively turning them into an extension of state bureaucracy, result in stagnant economies riddled with corruption. India in the 60s, France in the 80s, Italy in the 70s and 80s, Britain in the 70s, Bolivia at the moment and of course every socialist government without a representative form of government.

It's an old line, sure, but when the UAW is forcing GM to produce over demand, with the unsold remainder then sold as fleet vehicles, which are quickly rotated out and resold as used, to a consumer base that's quickly being strapped for cash as a result of $3/gallon gas prices among other things, it's hard not to point fingers.

As a caveat, there's at least ten billion other equally important factors in Detroit's economic slump. I could probably blame it on your mom, or 4chan, if I really wanted to try.

I have no problem with unions when they aren't stringing their employers by the balls, or attempting to enforce unrealistic or unsustainable business models when arguing on behalf of the workers. There's gotta be a balance of power in everything.

Under corporatism major industries can become embedded into the politics, obtain favourable laws and grow far beyond their actual practical usage. This is still favourable to the socialist model however since the corporations must prove themselves to the public in order to accumulate political capital.

The solution of course is to have a laissez faire system whereby corporations have no political capital beyond the voting power of their shareholders.

My family is very socialist, my grandmother having connections to Ghandi.
I can tell you in all seriousness that I was a pretty devoted communist for about a year, but the more i got into modern politics the more i just great towards modern socialists like... that guy from vermont... fuck whats his name...

well anyways, being hardcore in politics is a great way to get no one to like you.

I think America needs more socialism...

...and when I mean more socialism what I mean is let workers own the means of production in the private sector, while the government own natural monopolies and natural resources.

    What deregulation?

You aren't going to be able to answer, because there really was none, and the current crisis is due to intervention such as central bank manipulation of interest rates, quasi-government institutions such as freddy and fannie and regulation such as the CRA.

But sure, keep regurgitating inane socialist catchphrases if that's what helps you sleep at night.

    >the corporations must prove themselves to the public in order to accumulate political capital.

Aside from just letting some small groups of people have more say in politics than others being a big roadblock in democracy, lets suppose a corporation does enough service to the public that it gains "political capital". What happens when it becomes corrupt? Does it just bail itself out with this political capital? In fact, it could probably use that "capital" to change several laws that make their corruption illegal in the first place.
