/r9k/, I am contemplating staying awake for 5 days and would love to know the possible health risks and ways to keep myself awake. I will be giving myself a 15 minute nap every 12 hours.

5 days? Just make sure you keep yourself hydrated and well nourished.

Also, you won't be able to fall asleep for the first nap and won't wake up in 15 minutes from your third one.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:12:23 No.2700847
thos e 15 minute naps will take away from the heady thrill of forcing yourself to-

screw this answer, i've got nothing apart from the inability to sleep due to insomnia.

if you want to fuck up your sleep pattern, go ahead, it's a waste of time but you're going to do it anyway, so good luck to you.

House had a case where a patient was awake for 10 days, and he claims that there would be some brain damage by the 6th or 7th. House is generally accurate in terms of medicine, so I'd be careful and don't push it if you know something is wrong.

Otherwise, get some Concerta or Adderall
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:13:11 No.2700854
    >>2700845
Also, I wouldn't drive. Once you get 18 hours in or so, you'll start sleeping for very short spans of time (a couple seconds) which will get you killed on the road.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:14:32 No.2700866
You're not going to make it, dude.

The longest I've ever lasted without sleep is 50 hours. At some point you just need to crash.
    >> rogue mathematician 01/08/09(Thu)22:14:38 No.2700867
you will be fine as long as you don't plan to drive or use a bandsaw or whatever.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:15:26 No.2700874
    do meth
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:16:02 No.2700880
Yeah, not planning on driving, just spending most of my time on Xbox or here. Already got the water deal down, giant jug of it.

Yeah...now that I think about it, those 15 minute naps will end up being 12 hour ones after so long.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:16:24 No.2700884
Health risks other than mental aren't too severe or permanent. I forget how many days without sleep it takes, but you start hallucinating and stuff. Physical, I'm pretty sure you'll feel like shit, but I don't think you can die from 5 days deprivation.

As for staying up, I don't know...no matter how busy you keep yourself, it's going to be hard to stay up. The only thing I could think of would be actual physical activity, like go jogging when you're completely about to pass out, that usually keeps me up a little longer.

The most I've ever stayed awake was 3 days, and I felt like shit for a day or two afterward. Also, those 15 minute catnaps seem like either cheating, or you just won't wake up from one of them for like 10 hours.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:16:37 No.2700888
    I've done that before.

You'll be good until about 72 hours. Then you can legally be declared temporarily insane. You'll start to become delirious and start to see stuff. I suggest keeping yourself occupied and to not have anything important to do. Don't try it during school, or any big event. You'll end up in really bad shape.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:17:01 No.2700889
Those 15 minute naps, will be so tempting. I don't think you can make it after 36 hours or so.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:17:40 No.2700896
    >>2700880
Yeah, if you actually want to only sleep for 15, get a really absurd alarm set.

    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:21:33 No.2700924
I managed to pull 5 days once.

Caffiene and horrible insomnia. Refused to take the meds my doctor gave me for it, and decided just to power through it. Ended up pretty fucked up.

Get energy drinks and drink lost of water. Don't binge on caffiene, else you'll end up crashing. Find something, anything to do. I was coding, RPing, and chatting. I got real paranoid, starting see shit, and then it got REAL fun.
    >> Dispatch !6UjaoN63z. 01/08/09(Thu)22:21:58 No.2700927
    Psychology student here.

24 hours, you feel fatigue, loss of concentration, etc. Said to be equal to being under the influence of alcohol.

48 hours, extremes of 24 hour effects.

After that, patients experience mild hallucinations, much like being on a psychedelic drug.

After that, it'll start to be get really bad. Loss of vision, temporary schizophrenia/extreme feelings of paranoia, depression, and an inability to make coherent speech/understand others.

I wouldn't suggest doing it. It can damage your immune system as well.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:21:58 No.2700928
    >>2700902

I didn't mean that they wouldn't make it past 50 hours, but at about that point it gets really hard to stay awake.

    120 hours is ridiculous.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:22:58 No.2700939
    >>2700928

Samefag here. I was also doing it without any energy drinks or caffeine whatsoever. That's cheating.

How the fuck is caffeine cheating? And water? That's just NECESSARY to live.

Caffeine won't aid in staying up completely, especially if you have a high tolerance, it'll just keep you a bit more alert near the end.

There's no permanent damage to be done, but you will feel like shit for a few days after.

i heard about some way to decrease the total amount of time you stay awake by doing something you describe in the op, though i think it was sleeping for 20 minutes every 4 hours and after a week you'll have cut down your required sleep to just a couple of hours.

sounds cool as fuck but that week has to suck SO much.

This. Just for legal reference, after 72 consecutive hours of being awake you are no longer legally responsible for your actions until you have rested up. That's just how bad you get from lack of sleep. Also enjoy your hallucinations and following illness for weeks.

    >72 CONSECUTIVE hours

Sleeping for 20 minutes here and there breaks the count, and I wouldn't suggest going out to kill someone after being awake for 3 days since it won't be very easy proving you were exhausted in the court of law. However even in the eye of the law it is recognized that staying up for a few days is FUCKING RETARDED.
    >> Anonymous 01/08/09(Thu)22:41:41 No.2701110
Actually lack of sleep in combination with not eating is what causes brain damage to people to take meth. With this in mind, I would imagine that staying up for 5 days would cause brain damage to some extent.

There are absolutely no reprecussions of staying up for an extended period of time, other than feeling like shit for a few days afterward.
