OP, if I were you I'd take a look at the current game releases, and make your decision based on that. For my money, 360 is more catered towards towards the FPS/madden/rockband style gamer, (Halo 3, cod series early, larger online community, cheaper). On the other hand, PS3 is better hardware, and tends to have better japanese exclusives, so Valkyria/Disgaea/MGS, etc. Also, the online community is smaller, but noticeably more mature and FREE (have experience with both myself).

Beyond that, they really do have a lot of similar releases. I got a Ps3, since I'm mostly interested in playing soul calibur/rpgs, and have friends with 360's. Haven't regretted it at all, just make sure you're buying the right system for the kind of gamer you are. For instance, better graphics don't matter if you just wanna play guitar hero, so the 360 is a fine choice, etc.

Lastly, I'd just add in that I love the PS3 interface (they just released PS Home, looks fantastic even if I'll prolly never use it) and I really hate the new xbox dashboard.

I have a Wii and an Xbox360 and friend of mine owns a PS3.

I'll give you the rundown:

Wii - Nice gameplay mechanic for all the games (the Wiimote). It has the really totem games of our age (Mario, Zelda, etc...) but they are pretty much the same. Good console for the entire family. I would say it's still worse than the gamecube =(

PS3 - A fucking powerhouse. Runs the games really fast and smoothly. The graphics don't look much different than on the Xbox360, because makers of games ensure that the games run just as smoothly on every console. But even then, sometimes you can feel the power of the PS3. Also, blueray. Also, shitty game selection.

Xbox360 - The gamers choice. Great game selection, PROPER multiplayer (that doesn't mean good though), very good graphics (not as good as PS3), it dies sometimes.

I would choose the Xbox360 out of all my experience.

If I ever buy one of this, it would be a PS3. No logical explanations, I have PSX, PS2, and it has the kind of games I like. Maybe a Wii to play some JRPG, but never an XBOX.

Also, XBOX controllers look odd to me, PS haven't changed shape since I began to play, and it feels more comfortable to me. And fuck 50'' TVs, I have a FullHD 32'' one, PS3 would work cool with it.

It also depends on the kind of games you usualy like. IMHO, arcade fighters, RPG or social/musical games -> PS3. Action and shoot'em up -> XBOX.

But you know, try both in shops or friend's houses, look at the games both have and look at how much money can you pay. The buy what the fuck you want.

If you have friends over a lot, especially girls, the wii is golden. It's a great party console in a way that the 360 and ps3 aren't - and everybody gets involved.

It's not a raw gaming machine though, as a gamer, get one of those - but with the low cost of the wii it's not a terrible idea to pick one up too for social events.

PS3 is nice, the blu-ray player really does come in handy now that you can get blu-ray disks for so cheap. The game selection isn't huge though, so if you're the type to be playing the vidya every day, 360 is probably a better choice.

The graphics for both PS3 and 360 are nice. There are little differences that you won't notice when you're actually playing the game.
